Hey everyone! Look around you! Have you ever seen something that just glows? Maybe it’s a super bright star in the night sky, a cozy fireplace on a chilly evening, or even a shiny new toy. Things that glow or shine often catch our eye, don’t they? They’re special, they stand out, and sometimes, they even help us see in the dark!
Well, guess what? The Bible tells us that “we” are supposed to be like those glowing things! Woah! Think about that for a second. Today, we’re diving into a super important teaching from Jesus found in **Matthew 5:14, 16**, where He tells us something incredible about who we are and what we’re called to do. Itās all about letting our inner light shine!
It reminds me a lot of our friend, the pumpkin, from our object lesson! Remember how we had to clean out all those gooey, stringy bits before it could truly glow? Well, Jesus taught us that God wants to do a similar makeover in our hearts so “we” can shine His light too!

The air at Blossom Valley Middle School’s annual Fall Festival was buzzing with excitement! Friends Lincoln, Henry, and Anthony were gathered around a picnic table, planning their entry for the ‘Brilliant Jack-o’-Lantern’ contest. Lincoln, with his messy mop of red hair, was super enthusiastic. ‘Okay, guys, I’ve got a grand vision! We’re not just carving a face; we’re making a “story” pumpkin!’ Henry, ever the skeptic, raised an eyebrow. ‘A story pumpkin, Lincoln? Just make a scary face, dude. - One small LED candle or battery-operated tea light
Step-by-Step Guide:
Alright, everyone! Gather ’round and let’s get ready for some fun (and a little bit messy!) learning! 1. **Introduce the Pumpkin:** Hold up the whole pumpkin. ‘Look at this amazing pumpkin! It’s beautiful on the outside, isn’t it? But what do you think is on the inside?’ Get some guesses. 2. **The Big Cut (Adult Only):** ‘To find out, we need to open it up!’ With the newspaper spread out, have an adult carefully cut the top off the pumpkin with the paring knife. Woah! 3. **The Guts!** ‘Now, look inside! What do you see? It’s full of seeds and stringy, gooey stuff, right? This is all the ‘guts’ of the pumpkin!’ Explain that if we just put a light in “now”, it wouldn’t shine very well. The guts block the light! 4. **The Cleaning:** Invite a few brave volunteers (or do it yourself) to use the scooping tools to “really” clean out the inside of the pumpkin. Get every last bit of stringy stuff and seeds into the bowl. ‘It’s a little gross, isn’t it? But we’re making space for something amazing!’ 5. **The Transformation:** Once the pumpkin is clean inside, hold it up. ‘Look at the difference! It’s empty, clean, and ready!’ Place the LED candle inside the pumpkin. ‘Now, watch what happens when we add the light!’ Turn off the room lights if possible for a moment. ‘See how bright it shines? The light can now fill the whole pumpkin and burst out through its skin! Hold on… this is just like us!’ 6. **Connect to Lesson:** ‘Our hearts can sometimes feel a bit like this pumpkin before it’s cleaned ā full of messy thoughts, yucky feelings like anger or jealousy, or maybe things we’ve done wrong. “āYou are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden… let your light shine before others,ā (Matthew 5:14, 16 NIV).” (Matthew 5:14, 16)
Jesus was teaching a huge crowd of people, and He told them something truly amazing. He said, ‘You are the light of the world.’ Can you believe it? Not just a little light, but the “light of the world”! That’s a huge compliment, right? He didn’t say, ‘You “could” be the light’ or ‘You “might” be the light,’ but ‘You “ARE” the light!’
Then, He painted a picture for them. He said, ‘A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.’ Imagine a town way up high, with lights twinkling at night. You can see it for miles around, can’t you? It’s impossible to hide! Jesus was saying that followers of God aren’t meant to be hidden away in the dark, but seen, just like that city shining brightly.
So, what’s the big point? Jesus concluded with this powerful instruction: ‘Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.’ He wants us to shine so brightly with His love and goodness that people notice it, and then they’ll want to know the amazing God who put that light in us!

How do we know this? Because generation after generation has experienced His faithfulness, just like the Israelites remembered God’s works with the stones. When we let His light shine, we show others how awesome God is, and we give Him glory, not ourselves. This is “why” we believe ā because we experience His work in us, making us shine!

LINCOLN: But ‘coolest’ isn’t always ‘best’! Grandma always says the best things come from a little effort, and from letting your own ideas shine! Remember the object lesson? We have to clean out the messy parts to let the light shine!
HENRY: (Pokes at his pumpkin’s stringy guts with a spoon) Yeah, but these guts are “gross”. And there are so many of them! Itās easier to just put a tiny candle in here and hope no one notices how messy it is inside.
ANTHONY: (Nodding) Right! Who looks inside anyway? It’s all about the outside look. Like, if you just put a cool sticker on the outside, who cares about the mush on the inside?
LINCOLN: (Picks up the clean, empty pumpkin) That’s exactly it though! If we just put a light in this (gestures to Henry’s messy pumpkin), it would be dim! Blocked by all the… well, the ‘guts’! But this one (holds up the clean pumpkin) is ready to glow “so” brightly! Because itās empty inside!
HENRY: Empty? You mean… clean?
LINCOLN: Exactly! When God cleans out our hearts, He takes away the messy stuff ā the mean thoughts, the grumpy feelings, the times we’ve been selfish. He empties us of that, so His amazing light can fill us up!
ANTHONY: So, you’re saying like, if I’m holding onto grudges, that’s like pumpkin guts blocking my light?
LINCOLN: Precisely! And when He fills us, we shine with His love, joy, and peace! And that’s what other people see! Matthew 5:16 says, ‘Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.’
HENRY: Woah. So my lazy, messy pumpkin is kind of like… a selfish heart?
LINCOLN: Well, maybe not ‘selfish,’ but definitely not shining its brightest! If we clean this pumpkin (points to the untouched one) “really” well, and then do my ‘story’ idea, it will glow with unique beauty!
ANTHONY: You think so? It sounds like a lot of work.
LINCOLN: It is! But the best things usually are. And when we make that effort, it’s like we’re saying, ‘God, I want to shine for You!’
HENRY: Okay, okay, you convinced me. Let’s get these gooey guts out! (Starts enthusiastically scooping out the untouched pumpkin.) This IS messy!
ANTHONY: Me too! I’ll help! My hands are going to be sticky, but if it makes us shine, it’s worth it!
LINCOLN: That’s the spirit! Now, for the tiny windows! And then, a truly brilliant light!
[They all work together, a flurry of scooping and careful carving. Eventually, they have a beautifully clean, intricately carved pumpkin. Lincoln carefully places an LED tea light inside.]
MS. EVANS: (Enters, a clipboard in hand, smiling) Alright, boys, how are your creations coming along? Oh, my goodness! What a beautiful sight!
HENRY: (Proudly) This is our ‘Harvest Moon Story’ pumpkin, Ms. Evans! Lincoln’s idea!
ANTHONY: We cleaned out all the guts! It was messy, but now it glows so bright!
MS. EVANS: (Leans in to admire it) The detail, the glow! Itās absolutely radiant! And the story told through the carvings… truly unique! This doesn’t just look good, it feels good. It makes me smile! You know, it reminds me of how when someone is truly kind or joyful, it just lights up the whole room. That’s what your pumpkin is doing!
LINCOLN: (Beaming) Itās because we let the light shine, Ms. Evans! God cleans out the yucky stuff so His light can make us glow!
MS. EVANS: What a wonderful way to put it! This pumpkin is certainly a shining example! Congratulations, boys, you’ve definitely captured the spirit of the festival! This is truly brilliant!
[Ms. Evans puts a blue ribbon on their pumpkin. The boys high-five, grinning.]
HENRY: See, Anthony? It was worth the mess! And the hard work!
ANTHONY: Totally! Who knew cleaning out guts could be so glorious?!

š¦ Shine Your Light Tag
This game is best played in a dimly lit room or outside at dusk. Designate one person as ‘It’ who has a flashlight (the ‘darkness catcher’). The other players are ‘lights.’ The ‘It’ person tries to ‘catch’ players by shining their flashlight on them. If a player is hit by the light, they ‘freeze’ in a dramatic pose. Another ‘light’ player can unfreeze them by gently touching them and saying, ‘Shine bright!’ The game ends when all ‘lights’ are caught, or after a set time. Emphasize that even in the dark, light can find and free others!
āØ Inner Sparkle Scavenger Hunt
Hide small, sparkly, or glowing objects (like glow sticks, glittery pom-poms, shiny stickers, small LED lights) around the room. Divide kids into teams or let them work individually. Give them a list of ‘good deeds’ or ‘shining qualities’ (e.g., ‘find something sparkly for kindness,’ ‘find something shiny for honesty’). When they find an item, they must say a way they can show that quality to ‘let their light shine.’ The team or individual with the most items and good examples wins.
š§¼ Clean Sweep Relay
Divide the group into two teams. Set up two ‘messy’ areas at one end of the room (e.g., small piles of crumpled paper, lightweight blocks, or soft balls). At the other end, place two empty buckets. Give each team a small broom or a large spoon. On ‘Go!’, the first player from each team races to their messy area, ‘sweeps’ or ‘scoops’ one item, races back, puts it in their team’s bucket, and tags the next player. The goal is to ‘clean up’ their area fastest. Relate it to cleaning out the ‘mess’ in our hearts to make space for God’s light.
šØ Themed Craft: āØ My Shining Light Jar
Supplies Needed:
- Small, clean glass jars (like jam jars or baby food jars) per child
- Tissue paper in various bright colors (yellow, orange, white)
- Liquid glue or Mod Podge
- Foam brushes or regular paintbrushes
- Glitter (optional, gold or silver)
- Battery-operated tea lights (one per child)
- Optional: Permanent markers for decorating
Instructions:
- Let’s make our own ‘shining light’ jars to remind us to let God’s light shine through us!
- **Prep the Jar:** Make sure your jar is clean and dry.
- **Tear Tissue Paper:** Tear the tissue paper into small, irregular pieces. You want lots of different shapes and sizes.
- **Glue It On:** Use your foam brush to spread a thin layer of glue onto a small section of your jar. Then, press a piece of tissue paper onto the glue. Repeat this, overlapping the tissue paper pieces, until your whole jar is covered. Try to make it look like stained glass or a mosaic!
- **Seal and Shine:** Once the whole jar is covered, put another thin layer of glue over the tissue paper to seal it. If you want, sprinkle a little glitter on top while the glue is wet for extra sparkle!
- **Decorate (Optional):** Once the glue is dry, you can use permanent markers to draw stars, hearts, or even write ‘Shine!’ on your jar.
- **Add Your Light:** Finally, place your battery-operated tea light inside the jar. Turn off the lights and watch your jar glow! This will be a beautiful reminder to let Jesus’ light shine through YOU!
