Father’s Day is a wonderful time to celebrate the dads and male role models who guide, protect, and love us. Yet, in any classroom, we also teach kids from a wide variety of family backgrounds. Some kids have lost their dads, some have absent fathers, and others have relationships that are complicated.
That is why the most impactful and inclusive way to approach this holiday is with a Father’s Day children’s sermon that points directly to our Perfect Heavenly Father. God is the ultimate, unchanging provider who loves us unconditionally, protects us fiercely, and is always present when we call on Him.
Drawing from the comforting verses of Matthew 6:25-34 (Jesus’ teaching on not worrying) and Matthew 7:11 (our Father who gives good gifts), this lesson provides a clear, comforting foundation of trust for children of all ages.
“Look at the birds of the air… your Heavenly Father feeds them.” – Matthew 6:26
Modern Parable: 🏀 The Perfect Playbook
Paragraph 1: Woah! Let me tell you about Leo. He had just moved to a new town, and new school, and felt a bit like a fish out of water. But Leo had a secret weapon: he was amazing at basketball! His grandpa, who was like a super-dad to him, had taught him everything. Grandpa always said, ‘Stick to the fundamentals, Leo. Trust your training, and always look for the open teammate.’
Paragraph 2: The school tryouts were coming up for the ‘Raptors’ team, and Leo was nervous. He wanted to impress the other kids, especially the older, ‘cooler’ players like ‘Slammin’ Sammy. Sammy and his crew started pressuring Leo to try fancy, risky moves – behind-the-back passes, impossible dunks – stuff that looked good but wasn’t always smart. Leo felt the squeeze! He remembered his grandpa’s words: ‘Trust your training.’ But the pressure to fit in was huge! Would he try to be someone he wasn’t just to be accepted?
Paragraph 3: During the final scrimmage, the score was tied with seconds left. Sammy shouted for Leo to try a crazy trick shot. Leo hesitated. He closed his eyes for a split second, and his grandpa’s calm voice echoed in his mind: ‘Look for the open teammate.’ He ignored Sammy, saw his new friend, Maya, wide open under the basket, and made a perfect, fundamental pass. Swish! Maya scored the winning basket! The whole team erupted in cheers, and even Sammy gave him a nod of respect.
Paragraph 4: Can you believe it? Leo chose to trust the wise guidance he’d received, even when it was hard and everyone else was pushing him to do something different. He remembered the sacrifice his grandpa made, spending hours teaching him, and that advice saved the day. Just like Leo had a wise grandpa to guide him, we have an even wiser, perfect Heavenly Father who gives us the very best playbook for life! He always guides us in love, showing us how to make the winning moves, not just for ourselves, but for everyone around us. We can always trust Him!
Interactive Sunday School Object Lesson: 📦 The Unbreakable Promise Jar
Children learn best when they can see, hear, and feel a concept. The Father’s Day children’s sermon features a powerful, memorable object lesson using simple household items that demonstrate God’s protective wrapper around our lives.
🥚 Object Lesson Outline
Core Point: God’s promises are solid, secure, and always come true, just like the treasures we’ve sealed away.
Supplies Needed:
- A clear jar with a lid (like a mason jar)
- Small slips of paper
- Markers or pens
- Tape or glue
- A small ‘treasure’ (e.g.
- a shiny coin
- a small toy
- a piece of candy)
Step-by-Step Guide:
Get ready, because this is going to be fun! Hold up your empty jar. Ask the kids, ‘What do you think we can put in here?’ (Wait for answers). ‘Today, we’re going to fill this jar with something even more precious than gold: God’s promises!’ Hand out the slips of paper and markers. Have each child write down one attribute of God as our Father, or one promise from Him (e.g., ‘God loves me,’ ‘God provides,’ ‘God is faithful,’ ‘God is with me’). As they finish, have them fold their promise and tape it to the inside wall of the jar so it’s visible, or just drop it in. While they’re doing this, talk about how special these promises are. Once the jar is filled with promises, carefully drop the ‘treasure’ inside. ‘This treasure represents the blessings and security we have because of God’s promises.’ Now, screw the lid on TIGHT! Hold it up and shake it gently. ‘Look! No matter how much I shake it, or try to turn it upside down, the promises and the treasure are safe inside. This jar is sealed!’ Explain that God’s promises are just like this jar – unbreakable, secure, and always there for us. We can trust Him completely, just like we trust this jar to keep our treasure safe! It’s a powerful way to remember His faithfulness!

Hello, champions! Can you believe it? Today is super special because it’s Father’s Day! Who here has a dad, a grandpa, an uncle, or a special guy who’s like a father to them? (Wait for hands). Awesome! Our dads and father-figures do so many amazing things for us, don’t they? They teach us, protect us, make us laugh, and maybe even tell us corny jokes! Ha! But guess what? Today, we’re going to talk about the BEST. DAD. EVER!
Wait, think about that for a second… Who could possibly be the ‘Best Dad Ever’? You guessed it! Our Heavenly Father, God Himself! He is the ultimate, perfect Father who loves us more than anyone else ever could. And guess what? Jesus, God’s Son, taught us exactly how to talk to this amazing Father. He gave us a special prayer, and it starts with the most important words.
Aha! Grab your Bibles, or just listen up, because we’re diving into **Matthew 6:9-13**! This is where Jesus teaches us how to pray, and it’s a direct invitation to connect with our incredible Heavenly Dad!
📖 Scripture Reading: 📖 Matthew 6:9-13 (The Lord’s Prayer)
“This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.'” (Matthew 6:9-10)
Imagine Jesus sitting with His disciples, teaching them the most important things about God. They asked Him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray!’ And Jesus, with His kind eyes, began: ‘This, then, is how you should pray: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…”’ Woah! Right away, Jesus tells us to call God ‘Father’! Not ‘Big Boss’ or ‘Super King,’ but ‘Father’ – a loving, personal name!
Can you believe it? Jesus taught us to start by recognizing how special and holy God’s name is – ‘hallowed be your name.’ Then, He told us to pray for God’s kingdom to come and His will to be done on earth, just like it is in heaven. It’s like asking for God’s perfect plan to unfold everywhere, bringing peace and justice to the world!
Then Jesus continued, ‘Give us today our daily bread.’ He taught us to ask for what we need, trusting our Father to provide! And ‘Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.’ He also taught us to ask for forgiveness and to forgive others. Finally, ‘And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’ He taught us to rely on our Heavenly Father to protect us and guide us away from trouble. What a perfect prayer!
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: 👂 Sensory Engagement: As you read about Jesus teaching the disciples to pray, invite the children to close their eyes and imagine Jesus’ voice. Then, have them gently place their hands over their own hearts. Ask them to feel the steady beat. Explain that this heartbeat is a gift from God, and it reminds us that He is always with us, close to our hearts, listening when we pray to Him as our Father.
Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us
Hold on! What does this incredible story tell us about God? It teaches us that God is not some distant, faraway being; He is ‘Our Father’! He is personal, loving, and deeply involved in our lives. Think about it: Why can we trust Him? How do we know God is faithful? We know because Jesus, God’s own Son, taught us to call Him Father, and throughout the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, God consistently shows Himself as a provider, protector, and promises-keeper. He sent His Son, Jesus, to die for our sins, which is the ultimate act of fatherly love and provision! The purpose of remembering His works, like sending Jesus and answering prayers, is to build our faith and understand that His perfect love means we can always rely on Him. He listens to our prayers, He cares about our needs, and He wants what’s absolutely best for us. That’s *why* we believe He’s the perfect Father – because His character, proven through His actions and His Word, is utterly faithful and true!

Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: 🎭 The Super-Dad Survival Guide
Reinforce the message with a live drama skit! Our curriculum pack includes an easy-to-stage script designed for three participants. It brings the concepts of Father’s Day, perfectionism, and God’s perfect plan to life through humor and dialogue.
🎭 Skit Blueprint & Script Excerpt
Characters:
- AVA (8
- energetic
- a bit of a worrier)
- CHLOE (9
- sensible
- loves to plan)
- JOSH (10
- a little sarcastic
- but means well)
- MR. HENDERSON (Youth Pastor
- calm
- wise
- carrying a ‘special’ book)
[Setting: A colorful Sunday School room. Ava is pacing nervously, Chloe is trying to organize scattered craft supplies, and Josh is slumped in a chair, pretending to read a comic book.]
AVA: (Wringing her hands) I can’t believe it! My dad’s taking me fishing tomorrow, and I just know I’m going to drop the rod in the lake! Or worse, accidentally catch his hat! This is going to be a disaster!
CHLOE: Ava, calm down. It’s just fishing. You just need a plan. Did you check the weather? Do you have the right bait? Organization is key!
JOSH: (Without looking up from his comic) Or you could just… not go. Problem solved.
AVA: (Glares at Josh) Very helpful, Josh. Thanks. But my dad really wants to go!
CHLOE: See? He wants to spend time with you! That’s sweet. Maybe you should just ask him for tips?
JOSH: (Scoffs) Dads always have ‘tips.’ My dad’s ‘tip’ for my science project was ‘don’t let it explode.’ Very specific.
MR. HENDERSON: (Enters, smiling, holding a thick, brightly colored book titled ‘The Super-Dad Survival Guide’) Sounds like we’re having some ‘dad-related dilemmas’ here. What’s all the fuss about?
AVA: Mr. Henderson! My dad and I are going fishing, and I’m sure I’ll mess it up! I just wish I had a guide, like a secret cheat sheet for being good at everything!
CHLOE: And I’m trying to plan our summer activities, but there are so many options, I don’t know which one is the best. I wish I had a super-planner dad!
JOSH: (Sighs, finally puts down his comic) And I wish my dad understood why video game strategy is more important than cleaning my room. Or why my super-cool, limited edition action figures can’t be ‘donated’ to my little cousin. My dad just doesn’t… get it sometimes.
MR. HENDERSON: (Chuckles softly) Aha! I think I have just what you need. (He holds up ‘The Super-Dad Survival Guide’). This isn’t just any book, you know. It’s filled with wisdom from the ultimate Dad.
AVA: (Eyes wide) The ultimate Dad? Is it a famous fisherman? Or an inventor? Or a super-rich guy who can buy anything?
MR. HENDERSON: Even better! This guide comes from our Heavenly Father. (He taps the book.) He’s the perfect Dad, who knows absolutely everything, loves us perfectly, and always has the best advice. He’s never too busy, never forgets, and never gives bad advice. Not even once!
CHLOE: (Intrigued) So, it’s like… a blueprint for life? For everything?
MR. HENDERSON: Exactly! Ava, feeling nervous about fishing? Our Heavenly Father’s ‘survival guide’ tells us He is with you wherever you go (Joshua 1:9). He promises to give you peace instead of worry (Philippians 4:6-7). You can trust Him to help you, even with a fishing rod!
AVA: (A little less worried) Really? Even with fishing? That’s… reassuring.
MR. HENDERSON: Chloe, for your summer planning, the Guide reminds us to seek first His kingdom (Matthew 6:33). When you put God first, He helps you figure out all the other details, making sure your plans are good. He provides wisdom when you ask (James 1:5). He’s the ultimate planner!
CHLOE: (Nods) Okay, so if I ask Him for wisdom, He’ll help me choose the best summer camp? Amazing!
MR. HENDERSON: And Josh, about your video game strategy versus room cleaning… (Josh groans) The ‘Guide’ says to honor your father and mother (Exodus 20:12). Even when you think your dad doesn’t ‘get’ your video game passion, he probably cares more about you learning responsibility and respect. And remember, God knows your heart, and your hobbies, but He also knows what’s best for your character. Sometimes, obeying our earthly dads helps us learn to obey our Heavenly Father!
JOSH: (Raises an eyebrow, thinking) So… cleaning my room is like… a training exercise for trusting God?
MR. HENDERSON: (Beaming) You got it! Our Heavenly Father is the perfect combination of love, wisdom, and strength. He gave us His Word, which is this incredible ‘Survival Guide,’ so we can always know what to do, how to live, and how much He loves us. He’s better than any earthly dad, because He’s perfect. On Father’s Day, it’s wonderful to celebrate our dads, but it’s even more amazing to remember our Heavenly Dad who loves us unconditionally.
AVA: So, I don’t need a cheat sheet. I have the ultimate guide from the ultimate Dad!
CHLOE: And I have a wise planner to help me with all my summer decisions!
JOSH: (A small smile) And maybe… maybe I’ll go clean my room. Just to practice trusting the Super-Dad. You know, for strategy.
MR. HENDERSON: (Pats the ‘Super-Dad Survival Guide’) Excellent strategy, Josh! Let’s remember that God, our Heavenly Father, is always with us, guiding us, and loving us beyond measure. He’s the best Dad ever! Happy Father’s Day, everyone!

🎯 Active Games
🌟 Father’s Day Memory Match (God’s Attributes)
Prepare pairs of cards. On one card, write an attribute of God (e.g., ‘Loving,’ ‘Provider,’ ‘Faithful,’ ‘Wise,’ ‘Protector’). On the matching card, write a short explanation or example related to being a father (e.g., ‘Always cares for us,’ ‘Gives us what we need,’ ‘Always keeps His promises,’ ‘Knows what’s best,’ ‘Keeps us safe’). Lay all cards face down. Children take turns flipping two cards. If they match, they keep the pair and take another turn. The child with the most pairs wins. This game reinforces God’s character as our perfect Father.
🤝 Trust Walk
Divide children into pairs. One child is blindfolded, and the other is their ‘guide.’ The guide must lead the blindfolded child safely through a simple obstacle course (e.g., around chairs, over a mat, picking up a soft toy). Emphasize that the blindfolded child must completely trust their guide’s voice and directions. After a few minutes, have them switch roles. Discuss how trusting their guide is like trusting our Heavenly Father, who always leads us perfectly.
🔑 Promise Scramble
Write key words from short Bible verses about God’s promises or His role as Father on individual slips of paper (e.g., ‘God,’ ‘loves,’ ‘us,’ ‘so,’ ‘much’ – John 3:16; ‘I,’ ‘will,’ ‘never,’ ‘leave,’ ‘you’ – Hebrews 13:5). Mix up the words for each verse in separate envelopes or piles. Divide children into small teams. Give each team a set of scrambled words for one verse. The first team to correctly unscramble the words and identify the promise (or even the verse reference if they know it!) wins a point. This game helps kids connect with specific promises from God’s Word.
🎨 Themed Craft: ✋ My Heavenly Father’s Helping Handprint
Supplies Needed:
- Construction paper (various colors)
- Washable paint (various colors)
- Markers or crayons
- Optional: glitter glue
- stickers
Instructions:
Here’s a super special way to remember our Heavenly Father’s love! Each child will choose a piece of construction paper. Help them paint one of their hands (teacher may need to assist younger kids). Press their painted hand firmly onto the paper to make a handprint. While the paint dries, discuss all the ways God’s hand ‘helps’ us – He guides us, protects us, provides for us, and holds us. Once dry, children can use markers to draw a smiley face on their handprint thumb and fingers, turning it into a ‘helping hand.’ Around the handprint, they can write words like ‘God is my perfect Father,’ ‘He loves me,’ ‘He provides,’ or even write out Matthew 6:9-10. Add glitter glue or stickers to make it extra special! They can take this home as a reminder that God’s loving hand is always there for them.
