Modern Parable: 🎃 The Pumpkin Patch Power-Up!
Lincoln, Henry, and Anthony were on a mission. Their school, Maplewood Elementary, was having its first-ever ‘Biggest Pumpkin’ contest, and the grand prize? A whole month of extra recess! Woah, a whole month! Lincoln, the planner of the group, had sketched out their entire pumpkin-growing strategy. They had cleared a spot in Henry’s backyard, chosen the best seeds, and were ready to go. Anthony, always full of energy, was already picturing their massive, orange prize-winner. Henry just hoped they wouldn’t accidentally grow a giant squash instead!
As weeks passed, Lincoln was super careful, watering their little sprouts every day. But then, soccer season started, and Henry’s family went on vacation. Anthony got caught up in building an epic Lego castle. Slowly but surely, the daily care for the pumpkin plants became… well, less daily. Lincoln tried his best, but he couldn’t do it all alone. Some of their smaller pumpkin plants, the ones that weren’t quite getting enough water or sunlight because they were shaded by bigger weeds, started to look a little sad. Their leaves drooped, and the baby pumpkins weren’t growing much. It was a bit discouraging, to be honest.
Then, one Saturday, Lincoln’s grandpa came over. Grandpa Joe, a legendary gardener, took one look. ‘Aha!’ he exclaimed. ‘These little guys aren’t getting what they need to stay connected and strong. See this one?’ He pointed to a small, shriveled stem. ‘It’s barely connected to the main vine. The other plants are sucking up all the nutrients.’ Grandpa Joe spent the afternoon helping them prune weeds, guide the vines, and make sure each pumpkin had a clear path to the main, healthy stem, ensuring they were all properly ‘plugged in’ to the life source. He even built a little shade structure for the hottest part of the day, protecting the delicate leaves.
Guess what? Within a few weeks, those struggling plants sprang back to life! They plumped up, their leaves brightened, and the pumpkins started to swell. While they didn’t win the ‘Biggest Pumpkin’ prize, they grew several healthy, vibrant pumpkins, which they proudly shared with their whole neighborhood. The boys learned that day that staying connected to the main source of life and nourishment, and getting the right support, was absolutely key to growing strong and fruitful. It wasn’t about trying harder on their own, but about making sure they were consistently plugged into what they needed most!

Supplies Needed:
- One medium-sized pumpkin (if possible, one with a small piece of the stem still attached to illustrate the ‘connection’)
- A long piece of rope or green yarn (to represent a vine)
- A small, very sad-looking houseplant in a tiny pot (optional, for contrast)
- A healthy, thriving small plant (optional, for contrast)
Step-by-Step Guide:
Gather the children and show them the pumpkin. ‘Look at this amazing pumpkin! It’s so round and full!’ Hold up the rope or green yarn. ‘Where did this pumpkin get all its power and nutrients to grow so big?’ (Allow answers). ‘It grew from a tiny seed, connected to a long vine, just like this rope!’ Lay the rope on the ground and place the pumpkin next to it, making sure its stem (if it has one) touches the rope. ‘Imagine this rope is the main vine, and this pumpkin is one of its branches.’ If you have a sad plant, show it. ‘This plant looks a bit droopy, doesn’t it? Maybe it wasn’t connected to enough water or light.’ Then show the healthy plant (if you have one). ‘This one is thriving! Why?’ Lead them to understand connection. ‘In our Bible story today, Jesus tells us HE is the vine, and WE are the branches. This pumpkin could never grow big and strong on its own, separated from its vine, could it? Nope! It would just shrivel up!’ Emphasize that the vine brings the water, the nutrients, the life! ‘In the same way, Jesus provides everything we need to grow strong in our faith, but only if we stay connected to Him every single day!’

📖 Scripture Reading: John 15:1-8 (The Vine and the Branches)
““I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5 (NIV)” (John 15:5)
Jesus was teaching His disciples something incredibly important. He started by saying, ‘I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.’ Woah! So God is the one who tends to everything, making sure it grows just right. Jesus explained that every branch in Him that doesn’t produce good fruit, His Father takes away. And every branch that does bear fruit, He prunes or cleans up, so it can bear even *more* fruit! Can you believe it? God wants us to be super fruitful!
Jesus continued, ‘You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.’ He was talking about His teachings, how believing in Him washes us clean. Then came the super important part, our memory verse! ‘Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.’ Hold on… This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a BIG deal! Just like our pumpkin needing its vine, we need Jesus!
He repeated, ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.’ Think about that last part: ‘apart from me you can do nothing.’ That means trying to live a good life or grow in faith without Jesus is like a branch cut off from its tree. It might look okay for a little while, but it will soon wither and die. But if we stay connected, our lives will show amazing fruit – like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control!
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: 👉 During the story, pass around a real, sturdy vine or a thick piece of rope and let the children feel how strong and connected it is. Ask them to imagine a branch relying on this strong ‘vine’ for everything. Alternatively, let them gently feel the stem of the pumpkin from the object lesson, reinforcing its connection to the unseen ‘vine’.

Aha! So, what does this ‘vine and branches’ thing mean for us, right here, right now? It means that to grow big and strong in our faith, to truly be like Jesus, we HAVE to stay connected to Him every single day. Think of it like plugging in your phone to charge. If you don’t plug it in, it runs out of power, right? Well, Jesus is our power source! When we pray, we’re talking to Him and plugging in. When we read our Bibles, we’re hearing His voice and plugging in. When we worship and come to church, we’re connecting with His Spirit and His family. ANTHONY: (Puffs out his chest) I’d tell them they’re meaner!
HENRY: (Shakes his head at Anthony) Whoa, hold on! If I’m connected to Jesus, I’d remember what His Word says about loving others, even when it’s hard. Maybe I’d even pray for my friend!
LINCOLN: Brilliant, Henry! That’s choosing to act like a fruit-bearing branch, showing love instead of anger! Anthony, your turn! Challenge three: You’re bored at home, and you don’t know what to do.
ANTHONY: (Eyes light up) I’d make a super awesome Lego castle! Or play my video game!
LINCOLN: (Laughs) Those are fun, but how about connecting to Jesus first? What would a branch connected to the Vine do?
ANTHONY: Hmm… maybe… maybe I could read my Bible? Find a cool story about Jesus and His friends?
HENRY: Or listen to some worship music! That always makes me feel good and connected!
LINCOLN: Yes! Those are awesome ways to plug into Jesus! It’s like getting a ‘power-up’ for your spirit! When we’re connected to Him, we get His strength, His wisdom, His love.
HENRY: So, it’s not about trying to be a good person all by ourselves. It’s about letting Jesus give us the power to be good?
ANTHONY: Like how our pumpkin needed the vine, not just to try really hard to grow bigger on its own?
LINCOLN: Exactly! Apart from Him, we can do nothing truly good for God’s kingdom. But with Him, we can bear much, much fruit!
HENRY: So, every day, we need to make sure we’re plugged in?
ANTHONY: (Grabs the big, thriving plant) You bet! No more crispy branches for us! We’re going for super-fruit-bearing-awesome! (He pretends to water the plant enthusiastically).
LINCOLN: (Smiling at the audience) Let’s all remember to stay connected to Jesus, our amazing Vine, so we can grow big and strong in our faith and show His love to the world!

🎯 Active Games
🌿 Vine & Branches Relay Race
Divide kids into teams. Each team lines up. The first child ‘wraps’ their arm around the second child’s arm, who then wraps around the third, and so on, forming a ‘vine’. They must move together, connected, from a starting line to a finish line, grab a ‘fruit’ (beanbag, small ball, or paper cutout fruit) and bring it back, still connected. If anyone breaks connection, they have to start that leg of the race over. The first team to collect all their ‘fruit’ wins.
🌱 Fruit-Bearing Freeze Dance
Play upbeat Christian music. Kids dance around freely. When the music stops, they must ‘freeze’ in a pose that looks like a strong branch bearing lots of fruit (e.g., arms out, making big circles with hands). The teacher/leader can call out different fruits (e.g., ‘Show me your patience fruit!’ or ‘Your joy fruit!’). Anyone who moves or doesn’t make a good ‘fruit-bearing’ pose is gently out until only a few ‘super fruit-bearers’ remain, or just play for fun.
🔗 Connection Web
Have the children sit in a circle. The teacher starts by holding a ball of yarn and saying, ‘I am connected to Jesus, and He helps me to be kind.’ They then hold onto the end of the yarn and gently toss the ball to a child across the circle. That child holds a piece of the yarn, says, ‘I am connected to Jesus, and He helps me to be patient,’ and then tosses the ball to another child. Continue until a large ‘web’ of yarn is formed, visually demonstrating how we are all connected to each other and ultimately to Jesus (the starting point of the web).
🎨 Themed Craft: 🎨 My Fruitful Branch Mobile
Supplies Needed:
- Brown construction paper (for branches)
- Green construction paper (for leaves)
- Various colors of construction paper (for fruit)
- Yarn or string
- Hole punch
- Scissors
- Glue sticks
- Markers or crayons
Instructions:
- Give each child a piece of brown construction paper. Have them draw and cut out a ‘branch’ shape.
- Next, have them cut out several green leaves from the green construction paper and glue them onto their branch.
- Now for the ‘fruit’! Give them various colors of construction paper. Instruct them to cut out circles or apple shapes. On each piece of ‘fruit’, they will write or draw one of the ‘fruits of the Spirit’ (Galatians 5:22-
- that they want to grow in their lives, or a way they want to show Jesus’ love (e.g., ‘love’, ‘joy’, ‘kindness’, ‘sharing’, ‘helping’).
- Once they have several ‘fruit’ pieces, use a hole punch to make a hole in the top of each fruit and along the branch.
- Help them tie pieces of yarn from the branch to their ‘fruit’, letting them dangle.
- Punch a hole in the top of the main branch and tie a longer piece of yarn to create a hanger for their ‘Fruitful Branch Mobile’. Remind them this mobile is a reminder to stay connected to Jesus, the Vine, to grow this good fruit!
