You will use a vibrant community garden parable, an unforgettable ‘Full Hands vs. Open Hands’ object lesson, and interactive small groups to teach kids that letting go of earthly clutter makes room for God’s eternal riches!

πŸ“– Target Memory Verse: Matthew 19:21

“Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be complete, go and sell what you own. Give the money to the poor. Then you will have treasure in heaven. After you do that, come and follow me.’” – Matthew 19:21

πŸ“¦ Materials Needed

  • A large basket or bag full of small, desirable items (candy, stickers, small toys)
  • One beautifully wrapped, large ‘Grand Prize’ gift box (concealed under table)
  • Play money or coins (optional visual prop)
  • A willing volunteer child

Step-by-Step Object Lesson: Full Hands vs. Open Hands

Children remember truth best when they see it demonstrated hands-on. This visual illustration uses simple everyday items to show kids that When our hands are full of our own stuff, we cannot receive the bigger, better gifts God has for us. Letting go makes room for true treasure!.

πŸ”¬ Demonstration Instructions

1. Ask an energetic volunteer child to come forward to the demonstration table.
2. Show the child the basket full of small treats and toys: ‘Look at all these goodies! You can have as many as you can hold in both hands!’
3. Pile their hands high with candy and toys until they are struggling to balance everything without dropping items.
4. With their hands completely overflowing, reveal the beautifully wrapped ‘Grand Prize’ gift box from under the table. Say: ‘Wow, your hands are completely packed! But look what I have for you – a magnificent grand prize gift!’
5. Try to hand the large gift box to the child. Pause dramatically as they realize they cannot take it.
6. Ask the class: ‘What does our volunteer have to do to receive this bigger, better gift?’ (They must put down the small items).
7. Deliver the Key Truth: ‘Just like their physical hands, our hearts can become so stuffed with toys, screens, and selfish desires that we have no room for God’s blessings. To hold onto what Jesus has for you, you have to let go of what is in your hands!’

Full Children’s Sermon Script: The Heart’s True Treasure

Have you ever thought about what’s really important in life? We all love our favorite toys, right?

Maybe a cool new video game, a favorite pair of sneakers, or a shiny bicycle.

Today, we are diving into a powerful story from the Bible. It is about a young man who had everything money could buy, but still felt like something huge was missing deep inside.

This story, found in Matthew 19, helps us understand what Jesus truly cares about: not how much ‘stuff’ is crammed into your hands, but what is holding your heart!

πŸ“– Bible Story: Matthew 19:16-22

One sunny afternoon, a wealthy young man ran up to Jesus. He was successful, influential, and owned massive estates and bags of gold coins.

He knelt down and asked: ‘Teacher, what good thing must I do to have eternal life?’ He wanted to know how to guarantee his place in God’s kingdom forever!

Jesus reminded him of God’s commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not steal, do not lie, honor your father and mother, and love your neighbor as yourself.’ The young man quickly answered: ‘I have kept all these since I was a boy! What do I still lack?’ He truly believed his good track record made him complete.

Then Jesus looked right at him with deep love and said: ‘If you want to be complete, go and sell what you own. Give the money to the poor.

Then you will have treasure in heaven. After you do that, come and follow me.’ The young man’s face fell, and his shoulders slumped.

He turned and walked away heartbroken, because his wealth was enormous. He loved his earthly possessions more than he loved following Jesus!

πŸ–οΈ Sensory Engagement Element: Before telling the Bible story, pass around a heavy velvet pouch filled with metal coins or play tokens. Let each child hold it for a few seconds to feel its weight: ‘Imagine carrying so many bags of gold that your hands were permanently clenched around your wealth!’

🌱 Modern Parable: The Great Community Garden Giveaway!

“WHOA!” Marco shouted, steadying their prized gargantuan pumpkin as their wooden wagon rattled over the garden path. Ten-year-old Lily laughed, securing the stem.

Along with their award-worthy zucchini and plump tomatoes, this giant pumpkin was their ticket to winning first place in the annual ‘Harvest Heroes’ Community Garden Contest. They had worked all summer watering, weeding, and dreaming of holding the shiny champion’s trophy.

Their celebration halted when they wheeled past Mr. Henderson’s plot.

The kind, elderly neighbor sat on a bench, looking sadly at his wilting cucumbers and droopy cornstalks. A severe heatwave had scorched his patch, and his old, leaky watering can couldn’t keep up.

In contrast, Lily and Marco had a full barrel of fresh rainwater and a bag of premium organic plant food.

“Lily, we can’t spare any water!” Marco whispered nervously. “Our contest vegetables need every single drop!” Lily looked at Mr.

Henderson’s discouraged face, remembering their Sunday School lesson on true treasure. “Marco, what if winning isn’t about having the biggest pumpkin, but having the biggest heart?” Marco paused, then slowly nodded.

Together, they rolled their water barrel over and poured cool, life-giving water across Mr. Henderson’s thirsty crops.

At the award ceremony, Lily and Marco didn’t win the biggest vegetable ribbon. But Mr.

Henderson stepped up to the microphone and told the entire town how their kindness saved his garden. The crowd gave them a standing ovation!

Exchanging a joyful high-five, Lily and Marco realized their hands might have missed a trophy, but their hearts were overflowing with God’s true, lasting treasure.

πŸ’‘ Lessons for Us & Core Truths

This story teaches us a life-changing truth: Jesus doesn’t care how much stuff is in your hands; He cares what is holding your heart. The rich young ruler wasn’t disqualified because he had money; he walked away because his money had him!

When we clutch our possessions, video games, or status with closed fists, we miss out on God’s best. When we open our hands and put Jesus first, He fills our lives with true treasure – peace, joy, and eternal purpose that can never be stolen or lost.

🎭 Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: The ‘What If’ of Wonderful Walls

Bring the lesson to life with an easy-to-stage drama skit! Designed for characters LINCOLN (10 – An eager young builder), GIDEON (9 – Practical garden teammate), SAVANNAH (10 – Thoughtful friend), TEACHER TINA (Wise Sunday School teacher), MR. GRUMBLES (The grumpy neighborhood neighbor), it reinforces the story through engaging dialogue.

Characters:

  • LINCOLN (10 – An eager young builder)
  • GIDEON (9 – Practical garden teammate)
  • SAVANNAH (10 – Thoughtful friend)
  • TEACHER TINA (Wise Sunday School teacher)
  • MR. GRUMBLES (The grumpy neighborhood neighbor)

[Setting: A sunny community garden. Lincoln, Gideon, and Savannah are standing proudly in front of a massive wooden trellis and hedge barricade they’ve built around their garden plot.]

LINCOLN: (Beaming, patting the barricade) Behold, team! The Fortress of Foliage! Nobody can even peek at our prize-winning giant pumpkins now!

GIDEON: (Nodding firmly) Yep! And nobody can ask us to share our fertilizer, tools, or water either. Everything inside stays 100% ours!

SAVANNAH: (Frowning slightly) But guys, isn’t the whole point of a community garden to share and work together?

MR. GRUMBLES: (Muttering loudly as he shuffles past with an empty bucket) Hmph! A fortress of selfishness! Kids these days building giant walls around a few squash!

LINCOLN: (Whispering) He’s just grumpy because a groundhog chewed through his pepper patch yesterday.

GIDEON: (Shrugging) Not our problem! We guarded our crops!

[Teacher Tina walks up carrying a tray of warm cinnamon rolls.]

TEACHER TINA: Good morning, builders! That is quite an impressive wall you have constructed!

LINCOLN: Thank you, Teacher Tina! It keeps our treasure safe from everyone!

TEACHER TINA: (Smiling gently) It certainly looks strong. But sometimes, when we build tall walls around our things, we accidentally build walls around our hearts too.

SAVANNAH: What do you mean, Teacher Tina?

TEACHER TINA: Remember the story of the Rich Young Ruler in Matthew 19? He had great wealth, but his hands and heart were so full of his possessions that he couldn’t let go to follow Jesus.

GIDEON: So holding onto our stuff too tightly actually traps us?

TEACHER TINA: Exactly. When your hands are clenched tight around your stuff, you have no room to receive God’s greatest blessings – like joy, generosity, and loving your neighbors.

[Teacher Tina holds out the tray of cinnamon rolls.]

TEACHER TINA: Who wants a warm roll?

LINCOLN: (Reaches eagerly with two hands, but stops) Wait… if I take two, is there enough for Mr. Grumbles?

SAVANNAH: (Smiling) Mr. Grumbles loves cinnamon rolls. And you know, we still have two whole bags of fertilizer and three watering cans full of fresh rainwater.

GIDEON: (Pauses, looking at Mr. Grumbles’ drooping pepper plants) You know… his peppers really do need help. We could share half our water and still have plenty.

LINCOLN: (Grins, picking up a trowel) What if we build an opening in this wall right now? A Doorway of Generosity!

TEACHER TINA: (Beaming) Now that is what I call true treasure!

SAVANNAH: (Laughing) Let’s take down the barricade and invite Mr. Grumbles over for cinnamon rolls!

GIDEON: Unstuffed hands and an open heart feel a whole lot better than hoarding behind a wall!

LINCOLN: (High-fives Gideon and Savannah) Come on! Let’s go share what God gave us!

[The friends laugh and eagerly dismantle the barrier to help their neighbor, completely free of selfishness.]

Treasure Hunt for Truth

Hide large slips of cardstock containing phrases from Matthew 19:21 around the room. Divide the class into two teams. On ‘GO!’, teammates take turns finding one slip and bringing it back to their base. Once all slips are collected, the team must work together to assemble the verse in correct order. The first team to recite the completed verse together wins a golden sticker!

The Great Giveaway Relay

Set up two relay lanes. At the starting line, each child is handed five small beanbags or plastic balls (filling both hands completely). At the far end sits an empty ‘Community Gift Basket’. Racers must run down, drop three items into the community basket, race back, and pass their remaining two items to the next teammate. This fast-paced relay celebrates the joy and speed of sharing!

‘Let It Go’ Balloon Pop

Before class, write selfish attitudes or earthly distractions on slips of paper (‘Hoarding toys’, ‘Refusing to share’, ‘Always wanting more’, ‘Being stingy’). Insert each slip inside a balloon and inflate. Have kids stand in a circle and pass a balloon while upbeat worship music plays. When the music stops, the child holding the balloon sits on it to pop it, reads the slip, and declares: ‘Let it go for Jesus!’ Repeat with multiple balloons.
