πŸ“¦ Materials Needed

  • A small bottle of perfume or essential oil (like frankincense or myrrh, if possible, for historical connection)
  • A small, pretty scarf or cloth
  • A clear bowl of water
  • A piece of paper with ‘SHAME’ written on it

Step-by-Step Object Lesson: πŸ’¨ The Sweet Scent of Forgiveness

Children remember truth best when they see it demonstrated hands-on. This visual illustration uses simple everyday items to show kids that Just like a beautiful scent can fill a room, Jesus’ forgiveness fills our lives, washing away our shame and making us brave enough to love Him publicly..

πŸ”¬ Demonstration Instructions

1. Hold up the piece of paper with ‘SHAME’ on it. Ask the kids if they’ve ever felt embarrassed or ashamed, maybe when they made a mistake or were judged. Explain that **shame** can make us want to hide. 2. Hold up the pretty scarf and drape it over the paper, trying to hide ‘SHAME.’ Ask if hiding it makes it go away. (No, it’s still there). 3. Now, dramatically open the bottle of perfume or essential oil. Sprinkle a few drops into the bowl of water, then gently swish it around. Encourage kids to smell the air. 4. Explain that the woman in our Bible story brought a precious jar of perfume to Jesus. When she poured it out, the beautiful scent filled the whole room. This act of love, in front of everyone, showed how much she loved and trusted Jesus, even though others judged her. 5. When Jesus forgave her, it was like her shame was washed away! Just like the sweet scent now fills the room, Jesus’ forgiveness fills our hearts, making us bold and **unashamed** to love Him. We don’t have to hide our mistakes; Jesus’ forgiveness makes us clean and gives us courage!

Full Children’s Sermon Script: πŸ’– Washing Away Shame

Have you ever spilled something super sticky, like maple syrup, and felt completely covered in it? Imagine trying to hide that mess.

You might try to cover it up, but the stickiness is still there, isn’t it? That feeling of stickiness is a little like shame.

Today, we’re diving into an incredible Bible story from Luke 7, all about a woman who felt totally covered in ‘shame.’ But instead of trying to hide, she did something incredibly brave. She showed Jesus her love, and Jesus washed away all her shame.

This story shows us that Jesus’ amazing forgiveness gives us the courage to love and follow Him, no matter what anyone else thinks. It reminds us that we can be **unashamed** of our faith!

πŸ“– Bible Story: Luke 7:36-50

One day, a Pharisee named Simon invited Jesus to dinner. Now, Pharisees were religious leaders, and Simon was probably expecting a very proper, dignified meal.

But things were about to get very unexpected!

While Jesus was eating, a woman from the town, known for her sinful life, heard He was there. This woman did something extraordinary.

She brought an alabaster jar filled with expensive perfume. She knelt behind Jesus, crying so many tears that they began to wash His feet.

She then wiped His feet with her hair and kissed them, pouring the precious perfume on them.

Simon watched all of this, horrified. He thought, ‘If Jesus really were a prophet, He would know what kind of woman this is!’ But Jesus, knowing Simon’s thoughts, told a parable about forgiveness.

Then, turning to the woman, Jesus said, ‘Your sins are forgiven… Your faith has saved you; go in peace.’ He didn’t care what Simon thought; He saw her heart.

πŸ–οΈ Sensory Engagement Element: After describing the woman pouring the perfume, have the children close their eyes and imagine the strong, sweet smell filling the room. Ask them what kind of emotion such a powerful scent might evoke in the Pharisee versus the woman.

🌱 Modern Parable: Team Awesome & The Big Pumpkin Rescue

“Whoosh!” Gideon’s little red wagon, piled high with pumpkins, careened wildly down the bumpy dirt path. “Timber!” yelled Anthony as a massive gourd, twice his size, wobbled precariously.

Chris, Gideon’s dad, chuckled from behind his camera, capturing the chaotic, joyful scene at Farmer McGregor’s annual Fall Festival.

This was the “Pumpkin Haul Challenge,” and Chris, with his daughter Stella (a middle schooler who thought most things with her dad were ‘totally lame’), and a gaggle of elementary-aged kidsβ€”Gideon, Savannah, Tristan, Lincoln, Amber, and Ellisonβ€”were a team. “Alright, Team Awesome!” Chris boomed, “Remember, speed *and* careful stacking!

Stella, you’re our foreman!”

Suddenly, a sharp *CRACK!* echoed. Savannah, attempting to hoist an oversized pumpkin, tripped over a rogue root.

The prized pumpkin, destined for the top of their towering display, rolled down a small incline and smashed into a dozen pieces. “Oh no!” cried Tristan, looking at the pumpkin guts splattered everywhere.

A rival team, led by a notoriously sneering older kid named Vince, passed by. “Looks like Team Awesome just became Team Awkward,” Vince jeered, his friends snickering.

Stella’s face flushed bright red. She loved her dad, but Vince and his friends were ‘cool,’ and being associated with a pumpkin-smashing elementary crew wasn’t doing her middle school cred any favors.

She felt a growing wave of shame.

Chris, seeing Stella’s discomfort, gently put a hand on her shoulder. “Hey, it happens,” he said.

“What matters is how we respond.” Stella remembered their family motto: ‘Love like Jesus, even when it’s tough.’ She looked at Gideon, almost in tears, and then at Amber, who was trying to scoop up pumpkin seeds with her bare hands.

Taking a deep breath, Stella straightened her shoulders. “Okay, team!” she declared, a new energy in her voice.

“Operation Pumpkin Rescue! Gideon, grab the small ones.

Anthony, help me find replacements. Lincoln, Tristan, start clearing this mess!” She even winked at Amber.

“And Amber, you’re on seed patrol!”

With renewed effort, and Stella leading the charge, they not only cleared the mess but found even better pumpkins. They worked faster, laughed louder, and even though they didn’t win the ‘fastest’ award, they proudly presented the most creatively stacked display.

Chris beamed. Stella, amidst the cheers, realized that standing with her family and doing what was right felt a million times better than any ‘cool’ points she could ever get from Vince.

πŸ’‘ Lessons for Us & Core Truths

This story teaches us so much! First, **Jesus sees our hearts, not just our mistakes.** The woman’s public display of love showed her deep repentance and faith.

Simon, however, only saw her past and judged her. Jesus didn’t just forgive her; He affirmed her faith.

This is why we believe God is incredibly merciful: He doesn’t hold our past against us when we genuinely turn to Him. He offers complete forgiveness, wiping our slate clean.

Second, Jesus’ forgiveness empowers us to be **unashamed** of our love for Him. The woman was brave to show her devotion openly, even when others scoffed.

When we truly understand how much Jesus has forgiven us, it gives us the courage to stand up for Him, share His love, and live for Him, even if it feels unpopular or a little scary.

🎭 Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: πŸ‚ The Courageous Harvest Festival Clean-Up

Bring the lesson to life with an easy-to-stage drama skit! Designed for characters NARRATOR (Teacher), CHRIS (Dad), STELLA (Middle Schooler, Chris’s daughter), GIDEON (Energetic elementary kid), SAVANNAH (Enthusiastic elementary kid), TRISTAN (Quiet elementary kid), VINCE (Snooty older kid, Stella’s peer), it reinforces the story through engaging dialogue.

Characters:

  • NARRATOR (Teacher)
  • CHRIS (Dad)
  • STELLA (Middle Schooler, Chris’s daughter)
  • GIDEON (Energetic elementary kid)
  • SAVANNAH (Enthusiastic elementary kid)
  • TRISTAN (Quiet elementary kid)
  • VINCE (Snooty older kid, Stella’s peer)

[Setting: A slightly messy ‘pumpkin patch’ area after the festival. There are a few scattered pumpkin guts (orange paper scraps) and some stray leaves. Chris is trying to organize the younger kids, Gideon, Savannah, and Tristan, for clean-up. Stella is off to the side, looking at her phone, trying to appear nonchalant.]

NARRATOR: After the chaos of the Great Pumpkin Haul Challenge, it was time for the Great Pumpkin Patch Clean-Up! Chris, Stella, and their team were assigned the messiest section.

CHRIS: Alright, Team Awesome! Remember how awesome we were finding those pumpkins? Now let’s be just as awesome at getting this place spotless. Gideon, can you round up those rogue leaves?

GIDEON: (Energetically) Aye, aye, Captain Dad! (He starts enthusiastically sweeping leaves into a small pile with his hands, making more mess than he cleans.)

SAVANNAH: Look! A perfectly good pumpkin seed! I’m saving it for next year! (She carefully picks up a seed from the ground.)

TRISTAN: (Whispering) Mr. Chris, there’s a really big sticky spot over here.

CHRIS: Oh, that’s where the prize-winning giant pumpkin… well, had an unfortunate incident! We’ll need some serious elbow grease for that.

STELLA: (Sighing loudly, still looking at her phone) Dad, can’t we just, like, leave it? Someone else will clean it up. My friends are meeting at the apple cider stand.

CHRIS: Stella, we committed to cleaning our section. It’s about finishing what we start. Plus, it’s the right thing to do.

STELLA: But it’s so… uncool. What if Vince sees me? (She gestures vaguely towards the cider stand).

NARRATOR: Just then, Vince, looking very ‘cool’ with a slick haircut and sunglasses, strolled by, munching on a caramel apple.

VINCE: (Stopping, smirking) Well, well, if it isn’t the Pumpkin Patch Sanitation Squad. Hey, Stella, still slumming it with the kindergarten crew?

STELLA: (Her face turning red, she quickly shoves her hands in her pockets and looks at her shoes) Uh, hey, Vince. Just… helping out.

VINCE: ‘Helping out’ means getting your hands dirty? Not very glamorous. We’re going to check out the haunted hayride. Wanna ditch these guys and come with us?

NARRATOR: Stella was torn. The haunted hayride with Vince and his cool friends sounded amazing. But then she saw Gideon, still trying to sweep leaves with his little hands, and Savannah proudly showing Tristan her perfectly saved pumpkin seed. Her dad was quietly cleaning the sticky spot Tristan found.

STELLA: (Takes a deep breath, looking at Vince) Actually, no thanks, Vince. I told my dad I’d help clean up. We started this, and we’re going to finish it.

VINCE: (Shrugs, unimpressed) Suit yourself, Captain Cleanup. See ya. (He walks off, chuckling.)

GIDEON: (Looking up at Stella, beaming) Stella! You stayed!

SAVANNAH: You’re not going with the mean kid?

STELLA: Nope. My team needs me. And you know what? Cleaning up actually feels pretty good. (She kneels down and starts helping Tristan with the sticky pumpkin goo.) It’s not about being ‘cool’ to everyone else. It’s about doing what’s right and standing by the people you love.

CHRIS: (Smiling at Stella) That’s my girl. Just like that woman in the Bible story who wasn’t ashamed to show Jesus her love, you weren’t ashamed to show your love for your team. That’s real courage, Stella.

TRISTAN: (Holding up a small, clean spot) Look! I got some of it off!

STELLA: Awesome, Tristan! Let’s get this whole spot sparkling! Team Awesome, to the clean-up stations!

NARRATOR: And with Stella leading the charge, no longer caring what Vince thought, the pumpkin patch was cleaned up in record time, proving that true courage means being **unashamed** to do what’s right and love fully.

πŸ‘ƒ Scent Trail Challenge

Prepare several small cotton balls with different fall-themed scents (cinnamon, pumpkin spice, apple cider, pine). Place them in small, opaque containers or bags. Hide these containers around the room. Kids work in teams to find the hidden scents using only their sense of smell, identifying each one. The team that finds and correctly identifies the most scents wins. Connect this to the perfume filling the room and the impact of Jesus’ love.

🧑 Unashamed Obstacle Course

Set up a simple obstacle course around the room using chairs, blankets, and pillows. Give each child a ‘heart’ cut-out (paper or felt) with ‘My Love for Jesus’ written on it. The challenge is to complete the obstacle course while holding their heart high, showing it proudly, without letting it touch the ground or hide. If it drops or they hide it, they restart. This encourages children to proudly display their faith.

πŸ‚ Courageous Leaf Relay

Divide children into two teams. Each team gets a pile of fake fall leaves and a small basket at the other end of the room. The goal is to transport leaves one by one across the room without using their hands (e.g., holding it under their chin, balancing it on their head, or carrying it on their foot). This game requires perseverance and ‘courage’ to try different methods, linking to the courage to follow Jesus even when it’s tricky.

🎨 Themed Craft: 🌟 Unashamed Heart Jar

Supplies Needed:

  • Small, clean glass jars (like baby food jars or spice jars) for each child
  • Construction paper in various fall colors (red, orange, yellow, brown)
  • Scissors
  • Glue sticks or liquid glue
  • Glitter, sequins, or small gems
  • Markers or crayons
  • Yarn or ribbon

Instructions:

  1. Have children cut out heart shapes from the construction paper. They can cut several sizes. Write ‘Unashamed Love for Jesus’ or ‘Forgiven!’ on some of the hearts.
  2. Decorate the hearts with glitter, sequins, or markers. Encourage creativity!
  3. Glue the decorated hearts onto the outside of their glass jar. Overlap them, make a pattern, or just stick them on however they like, ensuring the words are visible.
  4. Tie a piece of yarn or ribbon around the rim of the jar. This ‘jar’ represents their heart, filled with gratitude and love for Jesus, ready to be poured out.
  5. Discuss how this jar is now a beautiful reminder that our hearts, once maybe messy, are now clean and beautiful because of Jesus, and we can proudly show our love for Him.
