Today, we’re diving into a super cool Bible verse from **Colossians 3:23** that gives us the ultimate mindset for all our ‘work.’ It says: ‘Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.’ Wait, think about that for a second! The summer sun was blazing, and the air buzzed with excitement—and maybe a little bit of dread! Supplies Needed:
- Two identical stacks of building blocks (e.g., LEGO Duplos, Jenga blocks, or wooden blocks)
- A blindfold
Step-by-Step Guide:
Gather the children around. Pick two volunteers. Hand one volunteer a stack of blocks and tell them to build the tallest, strongest tower they can. Tell the other volunteer to build a tower, but *secretly* tell them they don’t have to try their hardest, and it’s okay if it’s a little wobbly, because you’re going to cover it up with a blindfold anyway, so no one will truly see their effort. Once both towers are somewhat built, ask the group to look at them. Then, blindfold *everyone* except the leader. Ask the children, ‘If you couldn’t see these towers, how would you know which one was built with care and effort, and which one was maybe rushed?’ Then, take off the blindfolds and reveal the towers. Discuss the differences. Point out how the first builder might have felt proud, even if blindfolded, knowing they did their best. Just like that, God always sees our effort, and we should always work as if He’s the audience!

📖 Scripture Reading: Nehemiah 2:17-18, 4:6 (Rebuilding the Wall)
“Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” (Colossians 3:23)
Long, long ago, the city of Jerusalem was in ruins. Its mighty walls, which protected the people, had been torn down, and the gates burned. Can you imagine living in a city with no walls, totally exposed? It was a sad sight, and a man named Nehemiah felt it deeply. He was far away, serving as a cupbearer to the king, but his heart ached for his people and his city. He prayed and prayed, asking God for a way to help. What an awesome act of faith!
God answered Nehemiah’s prayers! The king incredibly gave Nehemiah permission to go to Jerusalem and rebuild the walls. This was a GIANT job! Nehemiah traveled to Jerusalem, inspected the broken walls, and then gathered the people. He told them, ‘You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.’ The people responded with excitement, ‘Let us start rebuilding!’ And so, they began the massive task.
Building a wall is hard work, and guess what? They faced lots of people who tried to stop them! Enemies mocked them and tried to scare them away. But Nehemiah didn’t give up. He organized everyone, saying, ‘Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and daughters, your wives and your homes.’ And the Bible says, ‘So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart.’ They worked day and night, tools in one hand, swords in the other, until the ENTIRE wall was finished in just 52 days! Can you believe it? Their willing hearts and hard work, for God, made it happen!
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: 👉 Teacher, pass around a small, sturdy rock or a piece of wood. Ask the children to feel its weight and imagine how many thousands of these would be needed to build a big wall. Let them feel the rough texture and think about the hard work of building.
Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us
Wow! Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem worked ‘with all their heart’ to rebuild that wall. They faced huge challenges, but they knew they weren’t just building for themselves or for Nehemiah; they were rebuilding God’s city, for God’s glory. This is exactly what Colossians 3:23 teaches us! When we work willingly, giving our best effort – whether it’s cleaning our room, helping a friend, or doing our homework – we are doing it for Jesus. It helps us understand *why* we believe God cares about our actions: because He made us, He loves us, and He wants us to honor Him in *everything* we do. ⚙️ The ‘Best Effort’ Relay
Divide the class into two or three teams. Set up a simple relay race with multiple small ‘tasks’ at different stations (e.g., stack 5 blocks perfectly, draw a quick smiley face, sort 3 colors of pom-poms into cups). The catch: each team member must complete their task to the ‘best of their ability’ (as judged by the leader for neatness/completeness) before the next person can go. The goal isn’t just speed, but quality. If a task isn’t done well, the leader sends them back to redo it. First team to complete all ‘best effort’ tasks wins!
🧐 Detail Detective Challenge
Before class, prepare a ‘messy’ table with several items that need to be tidied or organized. Hide 5-7 small, obvious ‘mistakes’ or things done poorly (e.g., a book put in backwards, a pen standing on its tip, a paper crumpled slightly). Divide kids into pairs. Give them 2 minutes to be ‘detail detectives’ and find as many mistakes as possible. After 2 minutes, reveal the mistakes. Discuss how a ‘best effort’ would have meant noticing and fixing those details. Relate it to Nehemiah’s careful planning and the garden parable.
💪 Human Machine Building
Assign different ‘jobs’ to small groups of children, like ‘pulling weeds,’ ‘stacking bricks,’ ‘mixing mortar,’ etc. Challenge them to create a ‘human machine’ where each person’s movement is a part of a larger, smooth operation. For instance, one child squats and pretends to lift a ‘brick,’ passes it to the next who pretends to ‘carry’ it, who then ‘places’ it. Emphasize how each person’s diligent ‘work’ makes the whole machine effective. Ask them to do their movements with ‘willing hearts’ and ‘best effort’ as if they are part of a very important team working for a great King.
🎨 Themed Craft: 🏅 My ‘Work for Jesus’ Medal
Supplies Needed:
- Cardstock or thick paper (white or construction paper)
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Glitter, sequins, stickers (optional)
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- Yarn or ribbon (about 18 inches per child)
Instructions:
- ✏️ Give each child a piece of cardstock. Instruct them to draw a large circle (or trace a cup) in the middle of their paper to create their medal shape.
- ✨ Inside the circle, they should write ‘Work for Jesus!’ or ‘My Best for God!’ They can also draw pictures of things they do (like cleaning their room, doing homework, playing sports, helping a friend) with a big happy face.
- 🎨 Encourage them to decorate their medal with colors, glitter, and stickers, making it look special and worthy of their best effort!
- ✂️ Carefully cut out the medal.
- 🕳️ Use a hole punch to make a hole at the top of the medal.
- 🎗️ Thread the yarn or ribbon through the hole and tie the ends together to create a loop, so they can wear their medal. Explain that wearing this medal is a reminder to do their best in everything, as if they are working for Jesus!
