“One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him” (Luke 17:15-16a)
🚶♂️ One day, Jesus was traveling towards Jerusalem, moving between Samaria and Galilee. As He entered a village, ten men who had leprosy met Him. Now, leprosy was a terrible, painful skin disease that made people outcasts; they couldn’t live with their families or friends. They had to stay far away and shout ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ to warn people. These ten men stood at a distance, as they were supposed to, and cried out in loud voices, ‘Jesus, Master, have pity on us!’
🗣️ Jesus, with His kind and powerful heart, saw them and simply said, ‘Go, show yourselves to the priests.’ This was a big deal! Back then, if a person was healed of leprosy, they had to be declared clean by a priest before they could return to their normal lives. So, the ten men started walking, even though they still looked sick. But can you believe it? As they went, as they were obeying Jesus’ command, they were miraculously *cleansed*! Their skin became perfect, their pain gone! Imagine their excitement!
🎉 Nine of them probably shouted for joy and sprinted off to their families, to their lives, to show the priests! But wait, hold on a second! Only one of them, when he saw he was healed, actually *came back*. This man, who was a Samaritan (which was unusual, as Samaritans weren’t often friendly with Jewish people), turned around. He praised God in a loud voice! He threw himself at Jesus’ feet, face to the ground, and thanked Him profoundly. Jesus asked, ‘Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner?’
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: 👉 During the story, when describing the lepers being healed, have the children feel a piece of rough sandpaper (representing the disease), then immediately a soft, smooth piece of fabric (representing the healing and cleansed skin). Say, ‘Imagine how wonderful it felt to go from rough and painful to soft and new!’

🏃♀️ U-Turn Relay Race
Divide children into two or more teams. Set up a cone or marker about 15-20 feet away. The first child from each team runs to the cone, shouts ‘THANK YOU, JESUS!’, then makes a U-turn (running around the cone) and runs back to tag the next teammate. The first team to have all members complete the ‘U-turn of praise’ wins. Emphasize the ‘THANK YOU, JESUS!’ shout as the ‘U-turn’ action.
🎁 Blessing Blindfold Walk
Pair children up. One child is blindfolded (‘receiving a blessing without seeing the giver’), and the other is the guide (‘God providing a way’). The guide gently leads the blindfolded child around a safe, open area, pointing out safe paths, and helping them avoid obstacles, without talking. After a minute or two, the blindfolded child removes the blindfold and is prompted to immediately turn and verbally thank their guide for helping them. Then they switch roles. Discuss how God guides us even when we can’t see Him, and how important it is to thank Him when we realize His help.
🙌 Thankful Heart Toss
Draw a large ‘heart’ outline on the floor with tape or chalk. Give each child a beanbag or a soft ball. Ask them to think of one thing they are thankful to God for. When it’s their turn, they loudly say what they are thankful for, and then try to toss their beanbag into the ‘thankful heart’. If they get it in, they get an extra cheer! This game reinforces verbalizing gratitude.
🎨 Themed Craft: 💖 U-Turn Thankfulness Wheel
Supplies Needed:
- Two paper plates per child
- Scissors
- Brad fasteners (paper fasteners) or a single hole punch
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Stickers, glitter, or other decorative items
Instructions:
- ✏️ **Outer Wheel:** Have each child take one paper plate. This will be their ‘U-Turn’ wheel. They can decorate the edge with designs or patterns.
- ✂️ **Inner Wheel (The ‘Blessing’ Window):** Take the second paper plate. Fold it in half and cut out a ‘U-shaped’ window near the top edge, big enough to reveal words underneath. Make sure the ‘U’ is facing upwards. Decorate this plate with the title ‘My U-Turn of Praise!’
- 📝 **Listing Blessings:** On the *first* paper plate (the solid one), have the children write or draw several things they are thankful to God for around the plate in a circle. Each item should be positioned so it can be seen through the ‘U-shaped’ window of the top plate.
- 🔗 **Assemble:** Place the ‘U-Turn’ window plate on top of the ‘Blessing’ plate. Line them up and use a brad fastener to poke through the center of both plates, allowing the top plate to spin freely.
- 🙏 **Spin and Thank:** Children can spin the top wheel to reveal different blessings through the ‘U’ window. When a blessing appears, they loudly say ‘Thank You, God, for [blessing]!’ This craft visually represents making a ‘U-turn’ (spinning the wheel back to a blessing) to give praise.
