🍎 Teacher’s Guide: This lesson plan dives into the powerful truth that God doesn’t have favorites, and His amazing love and rescue plan are open to absolutely everyone, no matter who they are or where they come from. Through Peter’s incredible vision and meeting with Cornelius, kids will discover that God sees every heart and desires to connect with each one. The main takeaway is to embrace God’s universal love and extend that same welcoming spirit to everyone around them.
Hey everyone! Have you ever had a moment where you *thought* you knew something, really, really knew it, but then, BAM! Something happened, and your mind was totally blown, and you realized everything you thought was true was actually… different? Woah, right? It’s like you had a ‘favorite’ way of thinking, but God had an even bigger, better way!
Well, guess what? Our Bible story today is all about one of those ‘mind-blown’ moments! It happened to a super important guy named Peter, one of Jesus’ closest friends. He had some very strong ideas about who God’s family was, and honestly, who it wasn’t. But God, in His incredible wisdom, was about to show Peter something revolutionary!
Today, we’re going to dive into a story from the book of Acts, where God makes it crystal clear: He doesn’t have favorites. His love, His rescue plan, His amazing family – it’s wide open to absolutely everyone! Can you believe it? Let’s find out how Peter learned this life-changing truth!
Drawing from the scripture passage of 📖 Acts 10:9-48 (Peter’s Vision and Cornelius’s Conversion), this lesson provides a clear, biblically-grounded foundation of trust and understanding for children of all ages.
“I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism. He accepts everyone who fears him and does what is right.” – Acts 10:34-35 (NLT)
Modern Parable: 👑 The Friendship Force Field
The school hallways buzzed with excitement! Tryouts for the annual ‘Super Squad’ challenge were next week, and everyone wanted to be on the winning team. Lincoln, a natural leader with a big smile, was already thinking strategy. Henry, his best buddy, was all about speed. Their friends, Gideon and Sawyer, were fantastic at problem-solving. Woah, this team was going to be unstoppable!
One afternoon, during lunch, Lincoln overheard Sawyer and Gideon whispering about their ‘secret strategy session.’ ‘We can’t invite Ember,’ Gideon mumbled. ‘She’s kinda quiet, and, well, she’s new to the school this year. She might slow us down.’ Sawyer nodded, ‘Yeah, and Watson’s a little clumsy, not really ‘Super Squad’ material, right?’ Lincoln’s stomach flip-flopped. Ember was so kind! And Watson always tried his hardest. But Sawyer and Gideon were so popular, it was hard to argue with them.
Just then, Abby, who always seemed to notice everything, walked up. ‘Hey guys, what’s up?’ she asked cheerfully. Lincoln hesitated, but Abby’s warm smile gave him courage. ‘We’re talking about Super Squad tryouts,’ he explained, ‘and some people think Ember and Watson shouldn’t be invited to plan with us because they’re… different.’ Abby paused, then said, ‘Wait, think about that for a second. Remember when Lawson helped us win the science fair, even though everyone thought his idea was weird? Sometimes the unexpected people bring the best ideas!’ She reminded them how much stronger a team is when everyone feels valued and gets a chance to shine, just like last year when her unique drawing skills saved their art project. Lincoln’s eyes lit up. He realized Abby was right!
That day, Lincoln confidently invited Ember and Watson to their planning session. To everyone’s surprise, Ember had an amazing idea for the ‘logic puzzle’ challenge, and Watson, with his quiet focus, spotted a crucial detail they had all missed. They all learned that day that true strength comes from including everyone, recognizing their unique gifts, and building a team where every single person feels like they belong. Just like how God sees every single one of us as precious and important!
Interactive Sunday School Object Lesson: 🌈 The Everyone’s Welcome Jar
Children learn best when they can see, hear, and feel a concept. This “No Favorites in the Kingdom!” children’s sermon features a powerful, memorable object lesson using simple household items to demonstrate the core spiritual truth: God’s family is made up of all kinds of wonderful, unique people, and every single one fits perfectly into His plan..
🥚 Object Lesson Outline
Core Point: God’s family is made up of all kinds of wonderful, unique people, and every single one fits perfectly into His plan.
Supplies Needed:
- 1 large clear jar or container
- Various small, diverse objects: buttons (different colors/sizes), beans (different types), pasta shapes, paper clips, small erasers, beads.
- Labels or small pieces of paper with words: ‘Smart’, ‘Shy’, ‘Funny’, ‘Loud’, ‘Athletic’, ‘Creative’, ‘New Kid’, ‘Quiet Reader’, ‘Leader’
Step-by-Step Guide:
Hold up your large clear jar. ‘Look at this jar, kids! It’s empty right now, but we’re going to fill it up. This jar represents God’s big family, His kingdom!’ Hold up one of your labels, like ‘Smart’. ‘Who here knows a smart kid? (or maybe you are one!) We need smart people in God’s family, right? Let’s put some ‘smart’ buttons in.’ Place a handful of one type of object into the jar. ‘Now, what about a ‘Shy’ person? Can shy people be part of God’s family? Absolutely! They bring quiet strength and thoughtfulness.’ Add a different type of object for ‘Shy’. Continue with each label and a different object, asking questions like: ‘Do we want funny kids in God’s family? You bet!’ ‘What about the ‘new kid’ who just moved to town? Do they belong?’ As you add each unique item, emphasize that they are all different – different shapes, colors, sizes – but they *all* fit into the same jar. ‘See? No matter what they look like on the outside, or what their personality is, or what talents they have, every single one fits. This is just like God’s family! He doesn’t have favorites based on how someone looks, acts, or what they can do. He wants EVERYONE in His jar – His kingdom!’

📖 Scripture Reading: 📖 Acts 10:9-48 (Peter’s Vision and Cornelius’s Conversion)
“I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism. He accepts everyone who fears him and does what is right.” (Acts 10:34-35 (NLT))
Our story starts with Peter, up on a rooftop, praying. He was really hungry! As he prayed, he fell into a trance. Suddenly, he saw the heavens open up, and a giant sheet came down, filled with all sorts of animals. Now, some of these animals were considered ‘unclean’ by Jewish law, meaning Peter would never, ever eat them.
But then, a voice spoke to Peter: ‘Get up, Peter. Kill and eat!’ Peter was shocked! ‘No, Lord!’ he protested. ‘I have never eaten anything impure or unclean!’ But the voice, which was God’s voice, said, ‘Do not call anything impure that God has made clean.’ This happened three times! Wait, think about that for a second. God was showing Peter something super important about things he thought were ‘off-limits.’
Just as Peter was wondering what in the world this vision meant, three men arrived at the house. They were looking for Peter! They had been sent by a Roman centurion named Cornelius, a Gentile – someone not Jewish – who loved God. The Holy Spirit told Peter to go with them without hesitation! Peter went to Cornelius’s house, and there, as he was preaching about Jesus, the Holy Spirit fell on Cornelius and his whole household, just like it had on the Jewish believers! Peter realized: God does not show favoritism! He accepts everyone who fears Him and does what is right!
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: 👉 During the story, when Peter sees the ‘unclean’ animals, have the kids close their eyes and touch various fabric scraps you pass around (rough burlap, smooth silk, bumpy corduroy). Ask them to describe how each feels. ‘Some might feel rough, some smooth. Some might seem fancy, others simple. Peter had ideas about what was ‘clean’ or ‘unclean,’ just like we sometimes have ideas about who belongs and who doesn’t. But God showed Peter that He made and loves all kinds of people, just as He made all these different textures. Every single one is valued by Him!’
Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us
Wow, what a story! Peter’s mind was completely blown open, right? He learned that God’s love isn’t just for one group of people; it’s for *everyone*! This means God doesn’t pick favorites based on your background, your looks, your talents, or even if you’re popular or not. His rescue plan, sending Jesus to save us, is for every single person who believes in Him. This is why we can trust God’s Word – because it consistently shows us His character: a God of boundless, impartial love. He wants you, and your friends, and even people you might not know yet, to be part of His forever family. We believe this because God’s actions throughout the Bible prove His faithfulness and His deep desire for *all* humanity to know Him. It teaches us to see others the way God sees them: as precious, loved, and absolutely welcome!

It brings the theme of “God’s Inclusive Love: Celebrating Diversity in God’s Family” to life through humor, relatable dialogue, and engaging storytelling.
🎭 Skit Blueprint & Script Excerpt
Characters:
- COACH MILLER (Energetic, fair, and wise)
- LAWSON (Confident, a bit prone to snap judgments)
- HENRY (Lawson’s friend, easily influenced)
- EMBER (Quiet, observant, artistic)
- SAWYER (Athletic, popular, friendly but sometimes exclusive)
- ABBY (Kind, thoughtful, perceptive)
[Setting: A brightly colored school gym. A few cones and a ball are scattered around. COACH MILLER stands center, holding a clipboard.]
COACH MILLER: Alright, Future All-Stars! Welcome to the tryouts for our brand new ‘Community Spirit Squad’! This isn’t just about athletic skill; it’s about teamwork, good attitudes, and making everyone feel part of something special! Our motto: ‘Everyone Plays, Everyone Matters!’
LAWSON: (Whispering to HENRY) Did you hear that, Henry? ‘Everyone Plays.’ That means even the… less coordinated kids. Ugh.
HENRY: (Nodding) Yeah. I hope Coach Miller still picks the *best* players. Like us! And Sawyer, obviously.
SAWYER: (Jogging over, grinning) Hey guys! Ready to dominate? I’ve been practicing my dribbling all week!
ABBY: (Walking up, carrying a sketchpad) Hi everyone! Coach Miller, what kind of activities will we be doing? My strength is more strategy and art, less… sprinting.
COACH MILLER: (Smiling at Abby) Excellent question, Abby! We’ll have a mix! Today, we’ll start with a team-building relay. Lawson, Henry, Sawyer, you three are Team Lightning! Abby, Ember, you’ll join Team Spark. We need more players, but let’s get started. Ember, are you ready?
EMBER: (Quietly, clutching her backpack) Uh, yes, Coach.
LAWSON: (Muttering to HENRY) Ember? She always sits by herself during lunch. Can she even catch a ball? This is going to be tough.
HENRY: I know, right? We need fast people! People who *look* like they belong on a team!
COACH MILLER: Listen up, Team Lightning! For this relay, you’ll need to work together. First, Lawson, you’ll run to the cone, then quickly help Sawyer with the puzzle at the station, then Henry, you’ll work with the other team to explain the rules to a ‘newcomer’ before finishing the lap. Go!
[Lawson sprints off. Sawyer follows, a little less enthusiastically. Henry looks confused at the ‘explain rules to newcomer’ part.]
LAWSON: (Returning quickly, panting) Alright, puzzle station! Sawyer, let’s get this done! (He tries to grab a puzzle piece from Sawyer, who is still studying it.)
SAWYER: Woah, hold on, Lawson! I’ve got a system. Let me look at all the pieces first.
LAWSON: No time! Just grab and stick!
[They argue, fumbling with the puzzle pieces, making little progress.]
COACH MILLER: (To Team Spark, who are waiting) Abby, Ember, your turn! Your challenge is to guide a teammate across the ‘imaginary river’ using only encouraging words, then draw a quick team flag that represents ‘unity’.
ABBY: (To Ember) Sounds fun, Ember! You’re really good at drawing, right? I saw your sketch of the school mascot. It was amazing!
EMBER: (Blushing slightly) Oh, thanks. I like drawing.
[Abby and Ember begin their challenge. Abby leads Ember across the ‘river’ with soft, encouraging words. Then, Ember quickly sketches a beautiful flag with interlocking hands and a bright sun.]
LAWSON: (Frustrated, back at the puzzle) Coach, this isn’t fair! Ember and Abby’s challenge sounds way easier than ours!
HENRY: Yeah, and Team Spark is so far ahead! We’re stuck! This puzzle is hard!
COACH MILLER: (Walks over to Team Lightning, calm but firm) Is it the puzzle that’s hard, or is it working together? Remember our motto, ‘Everyone Plays, Everyone Matters’? That includes listening to each other’s ideas, even if they’re different from your own. And Henry, your part of the relay is about welcoming. That’s a skill too!
SAWYER: (Looks at the puzzle pieces, then at Lawson) You know, Lawson, maybe we should’ve listened to my system. Or maybe we should have tried to understand Ember’s quiet way of thinking earlier, she’s actually pretty good at puzzles.
ABBY: (Calling out, proudly showing their flag) Coach! We finished our flag! Ember’s idea for the sun was perfect for ‘unity’!
COACH MILLER: Fantastic, Team Spark! See, Team Lightning? Everyone brings something valuable to the team. Ember’s quiet observation and artistic talent are just as important as Sawyer’s athletic skill or Lawson’s speed. God doesn’t have ‘favorites’ when it comes to who He wants on His team, which is His family! He values everyone for who they are and what unique gifts they bring.
LAWSON: (Looks at Ember’s flag, then back at the puzzle, a realization dawning) You’re right, Coach. We were so focused on who we *thought* should be on the team, we forgot about how to *be* a team. Henry, let’s try this together. And next time, we’ll ask Ember for her puzzle tips!
HENRY: Yeah! And I’ll practice my ‘welcoming skills’ for the newcomer challenge. Maybe Watson can show me, he’s really good at making new people feel comfortable!
SAWYER: (Smiling) We’re a team, no matter what. And the best teams include everyone! We just learned the most important lesson of the day!
COACH MILLER: That’s the spirit! Now, let’s reset and really show that ‘Community Spirit’! Remember, just like God, we want to make sure everyone feels welcome and valued!

Themed Sunday School Games & Craft Template
Keep the momentum going with active learning games and a themed craft that kids can take home to show their families!
🎯 Active Games
🌍 Human Knot of Unity
Divide kids into groups of 6-8. Have each group stand in a circle, facing inwards. Tell everyone to put their right hand across the circle and grab a random hand from someone opposite them. Then, tell them to put their left hand across the circle and grab another random hand (not the same person they are already holding, and not someone next to them). The goal is for the group to untangle themselves into a single circle without letting go of anyone’s hands. This game shows how everyone, though tangled and different, can work together to form a united, open circle, symbolizing belonging and inclusion.
🌈 Rainbow Bridge Walk
Lay out different colored sheets of construction paper or fabric scraps on the floor, creating a ‘path’ or ‘bridge’. Assign a ‘type’ of person to each color (e.g., red for ‘super fast runners’, blue for ‘quiet readers’, green for ‘new kids’, yellow for ‘creative artists’). As kids walk across the ‘bridge,’ call out a color and say, ‘Everyone who is a [type of person for that color] is welcome on the bridge!’ Then, after all colors have been called, say, ‘Now, everyone is welcome to walk on any part of the rainbow bridge!’ Emphasize that all types of people are important and welcome in God’s kingdom.
🤝 The Inclusion Circle
Have kids stand in a large circle. Start with one child in the middle. The child in the middle says, ‘I am looking for someone who…’ and completes the sentence with a non-physical characteristic (e.g., ‘is kind,’ ‘loves to laugh,’ ‘helps others,’ ‘is a good listener’). Everyone in the circle who fits that description steps into the middle. The group in the middle then links arms. The new person in the very center then says, ‘I am looking for someone who…’ and continues the pattern. This highlights shared qualities and breaks down superficial barriers, showing how many different people share good qualities and belong together.
🎨 Themed Craft: 💖 My Everyone’s Welcome Heart Mobile
Supplies Needed:
- Paper plates (one per child)
- String or yarn
- Construction paper in various colors
- Scissors (kid-safe)
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Glue sticks or tape
- Hole punch
Instructions:
1. **Prepare the Base:** Give each child a paper plate. Have them decorate the center of the plate with colors and positive words like ‘Welcome!’ or ‘God Loves Everyone!’ This will be the top of their mobile. 2. **Make the Hearts:** Give each child several sheets of different colored construction paper. Instruct them to draw and cut out 4-6 hearts of various sizes. 3. **Decorate the Hearts:** On each heart, children should draw a different type of person or something that represents uniqueness and inclusion (e.g., a child with glasses, a child with different skin tone, a child in a wheelchair, a child playing a sport, a child reading). They can also write words like ‘Friend’, ‘Kind’, ‘Unique’, ‘Loved’. 4. **Assemble the Mobile:** Use the hole punch to make 4-6 holes around the rim of the paper plate. Also, punch one hole at the top center of the plate for hanging. Punch one hole at the top of each decorated heart. 5. **Hang the Hearts:** Help children tie lengths of string to each heart, then attach the other end of the string through the holes on the paper plate’s rim. Make sure the strings are of different lengths so the hearts hang at various levels. 6. **Final Touch:** Tie a longer piece of string through the top center hole of the paper plate for hanging. As they work, remind them that just like all these different hearts make a beautiful mobile, all kinds of people make up God’s beautiful family, and everyone is welcome!
