It’s like a big, dark shadow is trying to creep up on you! But guess what? We’ve been learning that we don’t have to let those shadows win!
Today, we’re going to dive deep into an amazing story that shows us exactly how God’s love is like the brightest light, ready to zap those scary shadows away! Modern Parable: The Dare at Whispering Pines
Lincoln, Henry, and Anthony were the best of friends, always up for an adventure! One sunny afternoon, while biking near the old, abandoned ‘Whispering Pines’ house, their older brother’s friend, Jake, rode up. Jake, with a mischievous grin, dared them. ‘I bet you guys are too chicken to even step foot on the porch of the Whispering Pines house! Everyone says it’s haunted!’ Woah, a haunted house? That sent shivers down their spines!
Henry, usually the first to jump into anything, suddenly looked at his shoes. Anthony tried to act tough, puffing out his chest, but his eyes darted nervously towards the creaky, dark windows. Lincoln, however, remembered his grandma’s words from that morning: ‘When you feel a little scared, remember God is always with you, like a warm blanket, chasing away the cold.’ He knew Jake was trying to make them feel small, but that wasn’t how friends should act, and he definitely didn’t want to let fear win.
Taking a deep breath, Lincoln stepped forward. ‘Jake,’ he said, his voice surprisingly steady, ‘we don’t need to prove anything to you. Being brave isn’t about doing something dangerous just because someone dares you. It’s about doing the right thing, even when you’re nervous, and knowing you’re not alone.’ Henry and Anthony looked at Lincoln, then at each other, a new courage sparkling in their eyes. They knew what Lincoln meant—true bravery wasn’t about a haunted house, it was about sticking together and remembering the truth.
And just like that, the creepy shadows of the Whispering Pines house didn’t seem so powerful anymore. The boys decided to go play basketball instead, remembering that true strength comes from within, from knowing who you are and whose you are. They honored the courage inside them, knowing that remembering positive truths and kind words can chase away any scary feeling, just like remembering God’s love can squash any shadow of fear.

- A small pumpkin (or a dark box)
- A small flashlight or battery-operated tea light
- A dark blanket or towel
Step-by-Step Guide:
Hold up the pumpkin or dark box. ‘Look at this! It’s kind of dark and hollow inside, right? Sometimes, when we’re feeling scared or worried, it can feel like a dark, empty place inside us. What kinds of scary thoughts might be hiding in the dark?’ (Allow kids to share briefly). Now, drape the blanket over the pumpkin/box, making it even darker. ‘Woah, now it’s super dark! It’s hard to see what’s in there, and that can make us even more afraid, can’t it?’ Now, take the flashlight or tea light and turn it on, placing it *inside* the pumpkin/box. Slowly remove the blanket. ‘Aha! What happened? The light chased away the darkness! Suddenly, we can see! It’s not so scary anymore, is it? That’s exactly what God’s love does for our fears! When we let God’s light into our hearts, He squashes the shadows of fear!’

📖 Scripture Reading: Daniel 6:1-28 (Daniel in the Lion’s Den)
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid.” (Psalm 56:3-4)
Once upon a time, in a land far away, lived a man named Daniel. He loved God with all his heart and always tried to do what was right. The king, King Darius, liked Daniel so much that he made him a very important leader! But not everyone was happy about Daniel’s success. Some jealous officials hatched a mean, sneaky plan to get rid of Daniel. They tricked King Darius into signing a law that said no one could pray to any god or person except the king for thirty days! Woah, imagine that!
Daniel, however, wasn’t scared. He knew God was more important than any king or any law. Three times a day, just like he always did, Daniel knelt by his open window and prayed to God, giving thanks. He didn’t hide, didn’t whisper—he prayed openly! The sneaky officials caught him and reported it to the king. King Darius was heartbroken because he loved Daniel, but laws were laws, and he had to throw Daniel into a den filled with hungry lions! Can you believe it?
But here’s the amazing part! God sent an angel to shut the mouths of the lions! All night long, Daniel was safe in that den, with powerful lions who couldn’t touch him because God was protecting him! The next morning, King Darius rushed to the den, fearing the worst. ‘Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?’ he cried. And Daniel answered, ‘My God sent his angel and shut the mouths of the lions!’ Aha! God’s love and power chased away all of Daniel’s fear, and the lions’ hunger!

Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us
Woah! What an incredible story! Just like Daniel, we can face super scary situations, or even just those little worries that try to shadow our day. Daniel wasn’t afraid of the lions, not because he was super strong, but because he trusted God. He knew God’s love was bigger than any lion’s roar, bigger than any scary law, and bigger than any shadow of fear! We can trust God, too, because His Word, the Bible, tells us He is always faithful, always powerful, and always with us. He never leaves us! When we remember God’s promises and His presence, it’s like turning on the brightest light in the darkest room – all those spooky shadows of fear just have to disappear!

MAX: (Eyes wide, burrowing into his sleeping bag) But what if it wasn’t Mittens? What if it was… a giant, pizza-stealing ghost? I heard stories about this house!
CHLOE: (Gasps) A pizza-stealing ghost? Oh no! We just ordered that supreme! (She looks around nervously, then points at a chair with clothes on it) Woah! What’s that shadow?! It looks like a giant, wobbly monster with too many arms!
AVA: (Squints) Max, Chloe, that’s my jacket on the chair. See? (She gets up cautiously and turns on a small nightlight, illuminating the jacket.) Just my jacket.
MAX: (Peeking out) Oh… right. Still, it looked pretty scary in the dark!
CHLOE: It did! It totally did! It’s like the shadows make everything look spookier. My grandma always says shadows are just tricks of the light.
AVA: Exactly! And remember what we learned today? When the world feels spooky or scary, God’s love chases away all our fears! It’s like our own personal nightlight that’s always on, even when we can’t see it.
MAX: So, even if there WAS a giant, pizza-stealing ghost… God would be with us?
CHLOE: (Nods vigorously) Yep! Like Daniel in the lion’s den! He wasn’t scared because he knew God was protecting him, even from hungry lions! A pizza-stealing ghost is probably no match for God!
AVA: (Smiles) That’s right! Psalm 56:3-4 says, ‘When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid.’ God’s love is way bigger and stronger than any shadow or scary thought.
MAX: (Slowly sits up, looking less scared) So, if I start to feel spooky, I can just remember God’s love?
CHLOE: Totally! It’s like having the bravest, strongest superhero always by your side! (Suddenly, there’s another thump from the kitchen, louder this time. All three freeze.)
MAX: (Whimpers) Oh no! The ghost is back for the pizza!
AVA: (Takes a deep breath) Let’s remember God’s love. And let’s also maybe check on Mittens. (She grabs a small flashlight and tiptoes towards the kitchen. Chloe and Max follow, a little hesitant.)
[Sound of a cat meow, then a small crash. Ava peeks around the corner, then laughs.]
AVA: Aha! I knew it! Mittens knocked over the cereal box trying to get to a dropped crumb! She’s totally covered in Cheerios!
CHLOE: (Relieved, giggles) Oh Mittens, you little monster! (She scoops up the cat, who purrs.) So, no pizza-stealing ghost?
MAX: (Laughs, shaking his head) Nope! Just a very hungry, clumsy cat! See? God’s love really does squash the shadows!
AVA: And sometimes, it just squashes the mystery! Now, who’s ready for some pizza? It’s safe now!
[They all laugh and head to the kitchen, leaving the fear behind, basking in the glow of God’s comforting presence.]

🔦 Shadow Tag
Play a traditional game of tag, but with a twist! Play in a slightly dimmed room (or outside at dusk). The person who is ‘it’ tries to ‘tag’ another player’s shadow instead of their body. If they step on someone’s shadow, that person is ‘it’. Emphasize that shadows are fun in this game, but in real life, God’s light is stronger than any scary shadow! (Ensure room is safe for running).
🧱 Build a Trust Tower
Divide kids into small teams. Give each team a stack of building blocks (e.g., Jenga blocks, LEGOs, or even paper cups). Instruct them to build the tallest, strongest tower they can, representing their trust in God. As they build, encourage them to say one thing they trust God for. ‘I trust God for my family!’ (add a block). ‘I trust God to keep me safe!’ (add a block). The team with the tallest, most stable tower wins.
📣 Fear Fighter Shout Out!
Have kids sit in a circle. The leader says, ‘I’m afraid of…’ (and states a silly or common childhood fear, e.g., ‘I’m afraid of spiders!’). Then, the next person immediately shouts out something God does that squashes that fear (e.g., ‘But God made spiders! And He helps me be brave!’). Continue around the circle. Keep it light-hearted and positive. If a child struggles, the leader or another child can help them think of a ‘God response’.
🎨 Themed Craft: 🌟 God’s Light Catcher
Supplies Needed:
- Paper plates (one per child)
- Tissue paper squares (various bright colors)
- Clear contact paper or clear sticky tape
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- Yarn or string
Instructions:
- ✂️ Have kids cut out the center circle of their paper plate, leaving a sturdy rim. This will be their ‘frame’.
- 📄 Give each child a piece of clear contact paper (or have them use clear tape across the opening of the plate frame, sticky side up). They should stick this to the back of their paper plate frame, sticky side facing out, covering the hole.
- ✨ Instruct them to arrange and stick the colorful tissue paper squares onto the sticky contact paper, overlapping them to create a beautiful ‘stained glass’ effect. This represents God’s light shining through.
- 💪 Once filled, place another piece of contact paper (or tape) over the tissue paper to seal it.
- 🕳️ Punch a hole at the top of the paper plate frame and tie a loop of yarn or string through it.
- ☀️ Kids can hang their ‘God’s Light Catcher’ near a window at home to remind them that God’s light always shines, chasing away any shadows of fear!
