Lesson Overview & Target Scripture

🍎 Teacher’s Guide: This lesson helps kids understand that God is always working, even when we can’t see what He’s doing. Using a fall-themed parable and the powerful story of Jesus’ resurrection, children will learn to trust God’s unseen plan and His faithfulness, knowing He is always bringing about new and wonderful things.

πŸ“– Target Memory Verse: Isaiah 43:19 (NLT)

“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” (Isaiah 43:19 (NLT))

πŸ“¦ Materials Needed

  • A large, clear jar or container
  • Soil
  • An acorn (or any large seed like a bean)
  • A small amount of water
  • A dark cloth or towel

Step-by-Step Object Lesson: 🌰 The Mighty Acorn: God’s Hidden Power

Children remember truth best when they see it demonstrated hands-on. This visual illustration uses simple everyday items to show kids that Even when we can’t see it, God is working quietly to bring about new life and growth..

πŸ”¬ Demonstration Instructions

Today, we’re going to explore God’s amazing hidden power! Hold up your acorn. This looks like just a tiny, hard nut, right? Let’s put it in this jar of soil. Cover it up with more soil, so it’s completely hidden beneath the surface. Now, we’ll add a little water, just enough to make the soil damp. We’re going to cover our jar with this dark cloth, just like a seed is covered by the earth, completely hidden from our eyes. We can’t see anything happening, can we? But do you think anything is happening inside that jar? Yes! God’s miraculous power is at work right now, turning this tiny acorn into a mighty oak tree, even though we can’t see a single sprout yet. Just like this acorn, God is always working behind the scenes in our lives, even when we can’t see His plans or what He is doing beneath the surface.

Full Children’s Sermon Script: 🌿 Unseen Plans, Unfolding Wonders

Have you ever waited for a birthday surprise, and it felt like forever? You knew something good was coming, but you just couldn’t see it yet.

That’s a bit like how God works sometimes!

Our memory verse today, **Isaiah 43:19**, tells us something amazing: ‘See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.’ God is always doing ‘new things,’ even when we don’t ‘perceive’ them right away.

Sometimes, it feels like nothing is happening, or even like things are really hard. But God is always moving, always preparing something wonderful, often in ways we can’t see at first.

Let’s look at a powerful Bible story that shows us this truth perfectly!

πŸ“– Bible Story: Matthew 27:57-Matthew 28:10

Our story begins after Jesus had been crucified. It was a dark, sad day.

His friends and followers were heartbroken. It seemed like everything they hoped for had ended.

Joseph of Arimathea, a rich man who was a disciple of Jesus, bravely asked Pilate for Jesus’ body. He wrapped it in clean linen and laid it in his own new tomb, carved out of rock, then rolled a huge stone against the entrance.

The women who loved Jesus, including Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, watched sadly from a distance. Everything looked so final.

The tomb was sealed, and guards were placed to make sure no one could take the body. It felt like all hope was lost, and their plans were shattered.

From the outside, it looked completely bare and finished.

But God had a magnificent, secret plan unfolding! On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, there was a violent earthquake.

An angel of the Lord descended from heaven, rolled back the stone, and sat on it! The guards shook with fear.

The angel told the women who had come to the tomb, ‘He is not here; he has risen, just as he said!’ God was working a new, glorious thing, right when everything looked its darkest and most hopeless.

πŸ–οΈ Sensory Engagement Element: Give each child a small, smooth stone to hold while you tell the story. Tell them to squeeze it gently during the ‘sad’ parts and then release it, lifting their hands, when Jesus rises, symbolizing the burden being lifted and the joy.

🌱 Modern Parable: πŸ‚ The Great Community Garden Caper

CRASH! A stack of hay bales tumbled, sending a flurry of straw and a startled crow scattering across the community garden.

Leo yelped, nearly dropping the enormous pumpkin he was struggling to roll. ‘Whoa, Maya!

Watch it with that wheelbarrow!’ he yelled, trying to keep his balance. Maya, giggling wildly, narrowly missed a scarecrow arm that had gone rogue.

Their team, ‘The Garden Gnomes,’ was supposed to be creating the most amazing fall display for the annual harvest festival. Chloe was meticulously arranging gourds, while Ethan and Olivia were wrestling with a particularly floppy scarecrow.

‘This is harder than it looks!’ huffed Olivia, her face smeared with mud. ‘We need to make our plot look incredible, not like a hay explosion!’

They gazed at their patch. While other teams had towering cornstalks, vibrant mums, and bursting baskets of apples, the Gnomes’ plot looked… well, a little sad.

They had planted special ‘mystery’ flower bulbs weeks ago, hoping for a grand surprise, but all they saw was bare earth covered in a thin layer of fallen leaves. ‘It just looks like nothing is happening,’ sighed Chloe, kicking at a loose leaf.

A wave of discouragement washed over them. ‘Maybe we should just stick to decorating with pumpkins and forget the mystery flowers,’ suggested Ethan, frowning.

‘It’s too late for anything to grow, and the judges will think we gave up.’ The temptation to cover their bare patch with more hay or just focus on what was already visible felt strong. They wanted a prize, and their ‘hidden’ project felt like a failure.

Maya, however, remembered something her grandma always said about gardening: ‘Even when the ground looks empty, God is working hard beneath the surface.’ She looked at her friends. ‘We chose these bulbs for a reason.

We planted them, and we watered them. We just have to trust that something amazing is happening, even if we can’t see it yet.’ Her words sparked a tiny bit of hope in the group.

The festival day arrived. Their display was decent, but their bare flowerbed still felt like a weak point.

The judges approached their plot, pens poised. Just as they were about to move on, a gust of wind swirled through the garden, lifting the thin blanket of leaves from their patch.

And there, peeking through the soil, were dozens of tiny, green shoots!

A collective gasp went through the crowd. These weren’t just any shoots; they were the beginnings of rare, colorful tulips and daffodils, promising a spectacular spring display!

The judges, amazed by the hidden promise, awarded ‘The Garden Gnomes’ a special prize for ‘Anticipation and Unseen Beauty.’ Leo, Maya, Chloe, Ethan, and Olivia high-fived, realizing that sometimes, the greatest wonders are quietly preparing right under our noses, just like God works in our lives.

A wave of cheers erupted, not just for the visible pumpkins, but for the amazing secret that had been hidden under the leaves all along. It was a reminder that even when things seem bare, wonderful things are often happening right beneath the surface.

πŸ’‘ Lessons for Us & Core Truths

This incredible story of Jesus’ resurrection shows us that even when things look completely bare, dead, or hopeless, God is always working. The disciples thought it was over, but God was doing the greatest ‘new thing’ of all – bringing Jesus back to life and conquering sin and death!

We can trust God’s plan because He has shown His power and faithfulness throughout history, from creation to the cross, to the empty tomb. His Word, the Bible, is true, and it constantly reminds us that His ‘new things’ are always better than anything we could imagine, even when we can’t see them coming.

🎭 Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: πŸ‚ The Unseen Seeds of Hope

Bring the lesson to life with an easy-to-stage drama skit! Designed for characters LEO (Energetic, a little impatient), MAYA (Thoughtful, optimistic), CHLOE (Detail-oriented, can be easily discouraged), MR. GRUMBLES (Community Garden Manager, gruff but kind), it reinforces the story through engaging dialogue.

Characters:

  • LEO (Energetic, a little impatient)
  • MAYA (Thoughtful, optimistic)
  • CHLOE (Detail-oriented, can be easily discouraged)
  • MR. GRUMBLES (Community Garden Manager, gruff but kind)

[Setting: A community garden plot, sparsely decorated for fall. There’s a pile of leaves, a small sign that says ‘The Garden Gnomes,’ and a few lonely pumpkins. Mr. Grumbles is inspecting another plot nearby.]

LEO: [Kicking at the leaf pile] This is it, guys. Festival day, and our plot still looks like a sad, forgotten corner of nowhere.

CHLOE: [Adjusting a pumpkin glumly] I spent ages drawing our ‘mystery flower’ design, but all we have is… leaves. And dirt. Mostly dirt.

MAYA: But remember what we talked about? We planted those special seeds. They’re under here!

LEO: ‘Under here’ isn’t winning us the ‘Best Fall Display’ award, Maya. The judges are coming around. They want pizzazz! They want visible proof of effort!

MR. GRUMBLES: [Approaching, hands on hips] And what, exactly, is this? ‘The Garden Gnomes’? Looks more like ‘The Garden Snoozes.’ Where’s the razzle-dazzle?

CHLOE: [Muttering] We were hoping for… unseen razzle-dazzle, Mr. Grumbles.

MR. GRUMBLES: Unseen, eh? That’s a new one. Last year, young Ethan’s exploding science fair volcano was ‘unseen’ right up until it covered Mrs. Henderson in green slime. Not exactly what the judges are looking for.

LEO: [To Maya] See? He thinks it’s a joke! We should have just bought more giant squash.

MAYA: No! Mr. Grumbles, we planted a special kind of flower bulb. They take a while to grow, but they’re going to be amazing.

MR. GRUMBLES: Amazing, you say? Hmm. And where are these ‘amazing’ flowers now? Hiding under a blanket of leaves? Typical.

CHLOE: It just feels like nothing is happening. All the other plots are so vibrant!

MAYA: But God is always working, even when we can’t see it. Like a seed in the ground, or like… like when the winter looks bare, but spring always comes!

LEO: [Sighs] I wish God would work a little faster sometimes. Like a superhero ‘bam-pow’ kind of work.

MR. GRUMBLES: [Chuckles softly] ‘Bam-pow,’ eh? Son, sometimes the most powerful work is the quietest. You ever seen a tree grow? Doesn’t happen overnight with a ‘bam-pow.’ Happens bit by bit, under the surface.

CHLOE: But what if our seeds never sprout? What if we did something wrong?

MAYA: We did our part. We planted, we watered. Now we trust. Just like we trust God. He doesn’t forget His promises.

LEO: [Poking at the leaves again] It’s just so hard to believe when you can’t see anything. It’s like a secret no one knows.

MR. GRUMBLES: [Nods thoughtfully] Well, some secrets are worth waiting for. Speaking of which, the judges are heading this way. Time for ‘unseen razzle-dazzle’ to make an appearance, perhaps?

[A gentle breeze sweeps through the garden. The leaves on the Garden Gnomes’ plot begin to swirl and lift, revealing tiny, delicate green shoots pushing through the soil.]

CHLOE: [Gasps, pointing] Look! Look, Leo! Maya! They’re there!

LEO: [Eyes wide] Wow! They actually… they actually came up!

MAYA: [Grinning triumphantly] I knew it! I knew God was working!

MR. GRUMBLES: [A rare smile spreading across his face] Well, I’ll be. Unseen razzle-dazzle indeed. Looks like ‘The Garden Gnomes’ might just have something truly special after all. Something promising for the future. Something… new.

[The judges arrive and look at the tiny sprouts with impressed expressions. The kids cheer and high-five. Mr. Grumbles gives Maya a knowing wink.]

LEO: It didn’t need a ‘bam-pow’ after all. Just faith.

CHLOE: And a little wind!

MAYA: And a whole lot of God’s quiet work underneath the leaves!

🎯 Active Learning Games & Craft Template

πŸ•΅οΈ Hidden Treasure Hunt

Before class, hide small, brightly colored objects (like plastic jewels or tiny toys) around the room. Give each child a ‘treasure map’ (a simple drawing of the room with an ‘X’ marking a hidden spot, or just a list of clues). Explain that sometimes the best treasures are hidden, just like God’s work. The first team to find all their treasures wins! Emphasize that even when things are hidden, they are still there.

πŸ‚ The Leaf Pile Treasure Relay

Divide kids into two teams. At the far end of the room, scatter a large pile of faux autumn leaves (or crumpled paper). Hidden beneath the leaves are several acorns or large seeds. One at a time, players race to the pile, dig beneath the leaves to find one hidden acorn, bring it back to their team’s basket, and tag the next runner. The first team to uncover all their hidden treasures wins! Remind the kids: Just like these acorns were hidden under the leaves, God’s amazing plans are working even when we can’t see them yet.

πŸƒ Blindfolded Obstacle Course

Set up a simple, safe obstacle course (e.g., walk around chairs, step over ropes, crawl under a blanket). Pair children. One child is blindfolded, and the other is their ‘guide.’ The guide must give clear, gentle instructions to help the blindfolded child walk through the course. This game illustrates needing to trust someone even when you can’t see where you’re going, just as we trust God even when we can’t see His plan.

🎨 Themed Craft: 🌱 Hidden Growth Terrarium

Supplies Needed:

  • Clear plastic cups or small jars (one per child)
  • Potting soil
  • Bean seeds (or other fast-sprouting seeds)
  • Small pebbles or gravel
  • Markers
  • Small paper labels and tape

Instructions:

  1. Help children create their own mini-terrariums.
  2. First, layer a few pebbles at the bottom of the cup for drainage.
  3. Next, add about two inches of potting soil.
  4. Carefully place 2-3 bean seeds on top of the soil, then cover them with another inch of soil.
  5. Gently water.
  6. Have kids decorate a label for their cup that says ‘Hidden Under the Soil, God is Working!’ They can take these home to watch their seeds sprout, reminding them that God works even when we can’t see it.
