“But Jesus called the children to him and said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.'” (Luke 18:16)

πŸ“¦ Materials Needed

  • A small ‘Welcome’ doormat (or a piece of fabric labeled ‘Welcome’)
  • Several small toy animals or dolls

Step-by-Step Object Lesson: 🀝 The ‘Welcome Mat’ Demonstration

Children remember truth best when they see it demonstrated hands-on. This visual illustration uses simple everyday items to show kids that Just like a welcome mat invites everyone into a home, Jesus’ love is a wide-open invitation for all children to come to Him..

πŸ”¬ Demonstration Instructions

Place the welcome mat clearly in front of you. Hold up one toy animal. ‘Imagine this little bunny wants to come inside a house, but the door is closed. How does he feel?’ (Allow responses). Now, place the bunny on the welcome mat. ‘What does this mat tell the bunny?’ (It’s welcome!). Repeat with several more toys, having them ‘line up’ and then each step onto the mat. Explain that the mat says, ‘Come on in! You are wanted here!’ Just like this mat, Jesus’ arms are always open, saying ‘Welcome!’ to every single one of us, no matter what.

Wow, that story about the talent show was pretty exciting, wasn’t it? Have you ever felt like you really wanted to be part of something, but maybe you felt a little shy, or perhaps even a grown-up told you it wasn’t your turn?

It’s a tough feeling, isn’t it? Well, today, we’re going to dive into a super important Bible verse that tells us exactly how Jesus feels about kids.

It’s Luke 18:16, and it’s all about Jesus’ incredible, open invitation to YOU!

Our main idea today is huge: Jesus loves kids and wants to be our best friend! He actually *calls* children to Him, and boy, that’s a powerful picture of love and welcome.

πŸ“– Bible Story: πŸ“– Luke 18:15-17

In ancient times, children weren’t always seen as super important. People often thought grown-ups were the ones Jesus should spend His time with.

So, when some parents started bringing their little children to Jesus so He could bless them, the disciples, His followers, got a little grumpy. They thought the children were bothering Jesus!

The disciples actually tried to shoo the children away! Can you imagine?

‘Go on, kids, don’t bother the Master!’ they might have said. But guess what?

Jesus saw what was happening, and He wasn’t pleased with His disciples’ actions at all. He had a completely different idea about children.

Jesus called the children over to Him! He said, ‘Let the little children come to me; do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.’ He welcomed them with open arms, reminding everyone that children are incredibly special to God.

He even said that to enter God’s kingdom, we need to have a simple, trusting heart just like a child!

πŸ–οΈ Sensory Engagement Element: πŸ‘‰ Teacher, after recounting the story, ask children to gently touch their own hearts or a soft blanket/toy. Say: ‘Imagine Jesus’ gentle hand on your head. Can you feel the warmth of His love in your heart?’

🌱 Modern Parable: 🌟 The ‘Spotlight Shine’ Talent Show!

(Explosive Action Hook): The lights pulsed, the glitterball spun, and the auditorium buzzed with excitement! The annual Northwood Elementary Talent Show was about to begin, and backstage, absolute chaos reigned.

Kids in sparkly costumes, superhero capes, and even a kid dressed as a giant broccoli scurried around, bumping into each other with nervous energy.

(Characters & Snappy Banter): Hunter, Landon, and Olivia, known as ‘The Spotlight Stars’ for their perfectly rehearsed pop-dance routine, huddled together, whispering strategies. ‘Remember our synchronized spin, guys,’ Hunter reminded them, adjusting his sequined jacket.

Nearby, Paisley fiddled with her worn guitar, while Riley nervously adjusted his magic hat, and Savannah just watched, a quiet sigh escaping her lips.

(The Sudden Crisis / Disaster): The stage manager, Ms. Bell, called for a final check, but her voice was strained.

‘We’re running late! Only acts on the official list can perform tonight, kids.

So sorry!’ Paisley’s face fell; she hadn’t quite finished her song and didn’t make the cut. Riley’s magic trick needed one more day of practice, and Savannah?

She’d wanted to read her poem, but felt too shy to even sign up.

(Rising Tension & Temptation): Hunter, Landon, and Olivia high-fived, smug smiles on their faces. ‘More time for *our* grand finale!’ Olivia whispered.

Paisley, Riley, and Savannah drifted to the back, feeling small and invisible. It would be so easy to just slip out the side door and go home, wishing they’d never even thought about performing.

The temptation to believe they weren’t good enough gnawed at them.

(The Moral Breaking Point): Just then, Mr. Harrison, the kindest teacher at Northwood, noticed them.

He saw their slumped shoulders and downcast eyes. He remembered every child was special, every gift valuable.

He knew that true celebration meant *everyone* feeling cherished, not just the ‘stars.’ He made a decision to put kindness first.

(The Dramatic Climax): Mr. Harrison quietly approached Ms.

Bell, a determined glint in his eye. He then walked over to Paisley, Riley, and Savannah.

‘Hey, you three,’ he said with a warm smile. ‘We’ve got a special ‘Spotlight Shine’ segment for *everyone* who wants to share something unique, no matter how small.

How about it?’ He made a quick announcement to the crowd. A wave of cheers erupted!

(Triumphant Finish & Celebration): Paisley, heart thumping, played a beautiful, simple melody. Riley, with newfound courage, made a scarf disappear and reappear to gasps of delight.

Savannah, her voice clear and strong, recited her heartfelt poem. The entire auditorium cheered, not just for the ‘Spotlight Stars’, but for *everyone*.

They learned that day that true friendship and love mean making sure *every* heart feels seen and celebrated. High-fives and joyous smiles filled the air, as everyone left feeling like a superstar.

πŸ’‘ Lessons for Us & Core Truths

✨ Lessons for Us: This story is so important because it teaches us *why* we can trust God’s Word and *why* we believe Jesus loves us unconditionally. Jesus didn’t just tolerate children; He *welcomed* them, showing us that every single child is precious in God’s eyes.

We can know God is faithful because His love for us is constant, always inviting, and never changes. The purpose of remembering His works, like welcoming the children, is to build our faith and understand that His love extends to everyone, especially to humble, trusting hearts like yours.

🎭 Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: 🌳 The Park Bench Pals

Bring the lesson to life with an easy-to-stage drama skit! Designed for characters Hunter (The Leader), Landon (Hunter’s Sidekick), Olivia (Hunter’s Other Sidekick), Paisley (Quiet Artist), Riley (Inventive), Savannah (Kind Observer), Mr. Henderson (Wise Park Keeper), it reinforces the story through engaging dialogue.

Characters:

  • Hunter (The Leader)
  • Landon (Hunter’s Sidekick)
  • Olivia (Hunter’s Other Sidekick)
  • Paisley (Quiet Artist)
  • Riley (Inventive)
  • Savannah (Kind Observer)
  • Mr. Henderson (Wise Park Keeper)

[Setting: A park with a single bench. Hunter, Landon, and Olivia are huddled around a new, fancy frisbee.]

HUNTER: (Holding up the frisbee) Alright, team, this isn’t just any frisbee. This is the ‘Galactic Glide 5000’! Only for top throwers. We’ll form the ‘Elite Flingers Club!’

LANDON: Yeah! No wobbly throws allowed. Only perfect spirals!

OLIVIA: (Nods enthusiastically) And only for the best three of us, right, Hunter?

HUNTER: Exactly! Now, let’s practice our secret handshake. (They attempt a complicated handshake, mostly hitting each other’s hands.)

[Paisley walks by, carrying a sketchbook and pencils. Riley is tinkering with a homemade wind-up car. Savannah is sitting quietly on the park bench, watching everyone.]

PAISLEY: (To herself, sighing) Wish I could draw that cool frisbee. Maybe if I could get a closer look…

RILEY: (Muttering) If only I had a stronger spring for this car, it would be the fastest in the park! (He glances at Hunter’s group, then back to his car, looking a bit down.)

SAVANNAH: (Softly) They look like they’re having fun… but maybe not everyone is.

HUNTER: (Loudly, noticing Paisley get too close) Hey, Paisley! Watch it! This frisbee is super rare. You don’t want to mess it up!

PAISLEY: Oh, sorry! I was just… (She backs away, looking embarrassed.)

LANDON: (Chuckling) Yeah, you wouldn’t know what to do with a super frisbee anyway. Stick to your crayons!

OLIVIA: (Giggles) Some things are just for the pros!

[Paisley walks over to the bench and sits next to Savannah, pulling out her sketchbook but not drawing.]

RILEY: (Approaching Hunter, a hopeful look) Uh, Hunter? That frisbee looks really aerodynamic. Do you think I could maybe just… observe it for a minute? For my car design?

HUNTER: (Scoffs) Observe? Riley, this isn’t a science fair! We’re playing frisbee. Go play with your… whatever that is.

LANDON: Yeah, we’re busy with serious frisbee business!

RILEY: (Shoulders slump) Oh. Okay. (He slowly walks to the bench and sits on the other side of Savannah.)

SAVANNAH: (To Paisley and Riley, softly) Are you guys okay? You look a little sad.

PAISLEY: I just wish I could be part of something fun like that. But I’m not good at sports.

RILEY: Me neither. They always make me feel like my ideas aren’t good enough.

[Mr. Henderson, the park keeper, walks over, wiping down the top of the swings. He’s been observing quietly.]

MR. HENDERSON: (Warmly) Hello, kids! What’s happening over here? Everyone looks a little… quiet.

SAVANNAH: Mr. Henderson, Hunter, Landon, and Olivia are playing with a super cool frisbee, but they only want to play with each other.

MR. HENDERSON: Ah, I see. (He looks over at the ‘Elite Flingers Club’.) You know, I heard about a very wise person once. He said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them.’

PAISLEY: Who said that?

MR. HENDERSON: Jesus. He always wanted everyone to feel welcome, especially kids. He never thought anyone was too small or not good enough to be with Him. He wanted to be friends with everyone.

RILEY: Even kids who just like making wind-up cars?

MR. HENDERSON: Especially them! Jesus loves all your unique talents and interests. He created you to be exactly who you are!

SAVANNAH: So, He wouldn’t want anyone to feel left out?

MR. HENDERSON: Not at all. His arms are always open, welcoming everyone. He reminds us that true friendship means making sure everyone feels seen and loved.

[Hunter, Landon, and Olivia, having heard Mr. Henderson, exchange glances. Hunter looks a little guilty.]

HUNTER: (Clears throat) Uh, hey, guys? (He walks toward the bench, holding the frisbee.) Maybe we’re not being very… welcoming.

LANDON: Yeah, this ‘Elite Flingers Club’ isn’t much fun if no one else is having fun.

OLIVIA: My mom always says sharing is caring, even with a Galactic Glide 5000.

HUNTER: Paisley, Riley, Savannah… sorry. We got a little carried away. Would you guys like to try throwing the frisbee with us? Or maybe… Paisley, you could draw it? And Riley, maybe you could tell us how this super frisbee works with your science brain?

PAISLEY: (Eyes widen) Really? I’d love to draw it!

RILEY: And I could explain the aerodynamics! It’s actually really cool how the rim affects the flight path!

SAVANNAH: That sounds wonderful! We’d love to play!

HUNTER: Great! And Mr. Henderson, maybe you could be our honorary coach for the ‘Everyone’s Welcome’ Frisbee Club?

MR. HENDERSON: (Smiling warmly) That sounds like the best club in the whole park! Remember, just like Jesus, we can always choose to open our arms and welcome everyone. Because everyone is special, and everyone deserves a chance to play.

🎯 Active Learning Games & Craft Template

🌈 ‘Come to Jesus’ Relay

Divide kids into two teams. Set up a ‘finish line’ or ‘Jesus’ station’ at the other end of the room. Each child must skip, hop, or crawl to Jesus’ station, give a high-five or hug to the teacher (who represents Jesus), and then return to tag the next teammate. Emphasize that coming to Jesus is always a joyful, welcoming journey!

πŸ’– ‘Circle of Friends’ Game

Have all children stand in a large circle. Start by tossing a soft ball or beanbag to a child, saying ‘You are loved because…’ and they complete the sentence (e.g., ‘You are loved because you are a great listener!’). That child then tosses it to someone else, repeating the phrase. This emphasizes individual value and connection.

🀝 ‘Welcoming Wiggle’ Freeze Dance

Play upbeat music. Kids dance and wiggle around. When the music stops, the teacher calls out a ‘welcome’ action (e.g., ‘Welcome a friend with a wave!’ or ‘Welcome with a group hug!’). Kids perform the action and freeze until the music starts again. This promotes quick, joyful inclusion.
