Lesson Overview & Target Scripture

🍎 Teacher’s Guide: This lesson teaches children the life-changing spiritual truth: where you look determines where you goβ€”keep your eyes on Jesus! We’ll explore Peter’s miraculous, water-walking adventure on the Sea of Galilee and uncover why he began to sink the moment he shifted his focus to the roaring wind and waves. Through a relatable modern parable set at Lake Chatuge, memorable object lesson, interactive drama skit, and review games, kids will learn practical ways to stay focused on Jesus when life gets scary, distracted, or wobbly.

πŸ“– Target Memory Verse: Matthew 14:28-29 (NIV)

“β€œLord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, β€œtell me to come to you on the water.” β€œCome,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.” (Matthew 14:28-29 (NIV))

πŸ“¦ Materials Needed

  • Roll of masking tape or painter’s tape
  • Small toy (e.g., a stuffed animal or a rubber duck)
  • Open space on the floor

Step-by-Step Object Lesson: 🎯 Focused Feet Challenge

Children remember truth best when they see it demonstrated hands-on. This visual illustration uses simple everyday items to show kids that Just like focusing on a target helps us walk straight, keeping our eyes on Jesus helps us walk through life without stumbling..

πŸ”¬ Demonstration Instructions

First, create a ‘tightrope’ on the floor using masking tape, about 10-15 feet long. Have volunteers try to walk the ‘tightrope’ in two ways. First, tell them to try walking while looking only at their feet. Watch how wobbly they get! Then, have them try again, but this time, place the small toy at the end of the tape and tell them to keep their eyes fixed on it as they walk. Notice how much steadier they become when they have a clear target! Explain that looking at the toy is like keeping our eyes on Jesus.

Full Children’s Sermon Script: Stepping Out: Keeping Your Eyes Fixed on Jesus

Have you ever tried walking along a narrow curb, balancing across a fallen tree trunk, or stepping onto a wobbly floating dock? The very moment you look down at the ground or start worrying about slipping, what happens?

Your knees begin to shake, your arms start waving like windmills, and you immediately lose your balance! There is a profound truth that every athlete, builder, and follower of Jesus discovers: where you look determines where you go.

What you choose to focus on with your eyes and your heart shapes every single step you take.

Today, we are diving straight into one of the most exciting, jaw-dropping miracles in the entire Bible: the story of Jesus and Peter walking on the stormy waters of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus had just spent an exhausting day teaching crowds and miraculously feeding over five thousand people with just five small loaves of bread and two fish.

As evening fell, He told His disciples to climb into their wooden fishing boat and row ahead across the lake while He went up into the quiet hills alone to pray and spend time with His Heavenly Father.

But out on the open water, far from the safety of the shore, night closed in like a thick black blanket. Suddenly, without warning, violent gale-force winds came howling down through the mountain ravines, turning the calm lake into a raging battlefield of foaming waves.

The disciples were caught right in the middle of a life-threatening tempest! Let’s discover what happened when Peter dared to step out of the boat into the impossibleβ€”and what happened the second he took his eyes off Jesus.

πŸ“– Bible Story: Matthew 14:22-33

By the fourth watch of the nightβ€”between three and six in the morningβ€”the disciples were utterly exhausted, their muscles burning from hours of straining against the oars. Huge black waves crashed over the wooden sides, soaking them with freezing spray.

Suddenly, through the blinding mist, they saw a figure striding calmly across the churning whitecaps right toward them! The disciples shrieked in terror, huddling together in the bottom of the boat: ‘It’s a ghost!’ But immediately, cutting through the roar of the thunder, Jesus’ calm voice rang out: ‘Take courage!

It is I. Don’t be afraid!’

Hearing Jesus’ voice, Peter felt a rush of bold, reckless faith. Leaning over the gunwale, he shouted: ‘Lord, if it’s You, tell me to come to You on the water!’ Across the raging waves, Jesus smiled and spoke one powerful command: ‘Come.’ Peter didn’t hesitate.

He swung his legs over the edge of the rocking boat and planted his feet on the sea. The water held like solid stone!

While the other disciples watched in disbelief, Peter actually walked across the rolling waves toward Jesus, defying every law of nature because his eyes were locked onto his Savior!

Thenβ€”a deafening blast of wind slammed into Peter, and a towering wave exploded to his side. For one fatal second, Peter looked away from Jesus and stared down at the swirling black depths.

Fear seized his heart, and the instant his focus shifted, he began to sink! Desperate, he lunged his hand upward and screamed: ‘Lord, save me!’ Instantly, Jesus reached out, gripped Peter’s arm with an unbreakable hold, and lifted him out of the deep.

As Jesus led him safely back into the boat, the howling wind stopped immediately, leaving the lake glass-smooth in sacred peace.

πŸ–οΈ Sensory Engagement Element: πŸ‘‰ Have children close their eyes and listen closely: have everyone rub their palms together and make a low roaring ‘shhhh’ sound like ocean waves, then suddenly snap to absolute silence when you whisper ‘Peace, be still,’ demonstrating how instantly Jesus brings calm when we focus on Him.

🌱 Modern Parable: The Lake Chatuge Challenge: Don’t Look Down!

It was the kind of summer afternoon that was made for Lake Chatuge. The water was clear, the mountains rose up all around, and the air smelled like pine trees and sunscreen.

Aspen and her friends had been out on the water all dayβ€”Christopher and Gaines were racing kayaks along the cove, Maya and Anna had already taken turns on the paddleboard, and Ryleigh was keeping an unofficial scoreboard on her phone. Now it was Aspen’s turn.

The challenge was simple: stand up on the paddleboard and paddle all the way out to the yellow buoy and back without falling in. Maya made it look easy.

‘It’s not that hard,’ she said, handing Aspen the paddle. ‘The instructors at camp taught us one ruleβ€”pick something far away to look at and don’t take your eyes off it.

That’s it.’

Aspen stepped onto the board from the dock, knelt for a second to get her balance, and then slowly rose to her feet. The board wobbled a little, but she steadied out.

She started paddling, and for the first ten strokes, it was actually awesomeβ€”she felt strong, she felt balanced, she felt like she was walking on water. But then she made the mistake.

She looked down. The board was floating over about eight feet of dark, cold lake, and when she saw it shift beneath her feet, her brain panicked.

She tightened up everywhere at onceβ€”her knees locked, her shoulders stiffened, her paddle froze mid-stroke. The board rocked hard to the left, then to the right, and before she could recoverβ€”splash.

She went in.

The water was cold enough to take her breath away for a second. She came up laughing, pushed her hair out of her face, and swam back to the board while the others clapped from the dock.

‘You were doing so good!’ Ryleigh called out. ‘What happened?’ Aspen grabbed the side of the board.

‘I looked down,’ she admitted. Zephyr, who had been watching quietly from the end of the dock, sat up.

‘That’s literally the only rule they tell you,’ he said. ‘If you look down at the water, your whole body shifts that direction and you lose it.

Your eyes lead everything else.’ Gaines nodded. ‘Pick something far awayβ€”like that red sign on the shore over thereβ€”and just stare at it the whole time.

Don’t look at the board, don’t look at the water, don’t look at your feet.’

Aspen climbed back onto the board, took a breath, and found the red sign on the far shore. She locked her eyes on it.

That was itβ€”just the sign. Not the dark water, not the rocking board, not how far the buoy seemed.

She started paddling. The board moved under her but this time she didn’t react to itβ€”she just kept her eyes up and her strokes steady.

Maya started cheering first, then Christopher, then all of them. Aspen didn’t look over.

She didn’t look down. She touched the buoy, turned around, paddled back, and stepped off onto the dock without falling.

The whole group erupted. ‘There it is!’ Zephyr shouted.

Aspen grinned, finally looking down at the water she had just crossed. ‘I didn’t even notice it was deep,’ she said.

‘I was too busy looking at where I was going.’

πŸ’‘ Lessons for Us & Core Truths

Just like Aspen on Lake Chatugeβ€”steady until the moment she looked down at the dark water and lost her balanceβ€”Peter began to sink the second he took his eyes off Jesus and stared at the waves beneath him. In our everyday lives, we all face storms: worries about school, feeling left out, or fear of trying something new.

If we stare at our problems, fear takes over and we start to sink. But when we fix our eyes on Jesus through prayer and trust His promises, He keeps our steps steady through every storm!

🎭 Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: The Wobbly Wonder-Build

Bring the lesson to life with an easy-to-stage drama skit! Designed for characters MS. GRACE (A kind, encouraging Sunday School Teacher), OLIVIA (Energetic, sometimes easily distracted), LIAM (Careful, a bit of a worrier), CHLOE (Confident, loves to build), it reinforces the story through engaging dialogue.

Characters:

  • MS. GRACE (A kind, encouraging Sunday School Teacher)
  • OLIVIA (Energetic, sometimes easily distracted)
  • LIAM (Careful, a bit of a worrier)
  • CHLOE (Confident, loves to build)

[Setting: A brightly colored classroom. In the center, there’s a pile of colorful building blocks and a picture of an intricate, tall tower on an easel.]

MS. GRACE: Alright, team! Today, we’re building the ‘Wonder Tower’! The goal is to build this amazing tower, super tall and sturdy, just like in the picture. But here’s the challenge: you can only look at the picture of the finished tower while you’re placing blocks, not at your hands or the blocks themselves!

OLIVIA: (Gasps) Only look at the picture? That’s going to be so hard! But so cool! My eyes are on the prize! (She grabs a block, enthusiastically looking at the picture, then quickly glances at her hands as she places it. The block wobbles.) Uh oh. Too much looking away!

LIAM: (Frowning, holding a block carefully) Ms. Grace, what if I accidentally knock it over? My hands feel so clumsy when I’m not looking at them. Maybe I should just build a really short tower, then it won’t fall.

CHLOE: Don’t worry, Liam! We just have to remember what Ms. Grace said. Keep your eyes on the goal! Think of it like a tightrope walker – they look ahead, not down at their feet. (She picks up a block, fixes her gaze on the picture, and places it smoothly. It’s a little off, but she corrects it quickly.) See? It works!

OLIVIA: (Adding another block, still peeking at her hands) This is like Peter on the water, right? When he looked at Jesus, he could walk, but when he looked at the waves, he started to sink! These blocks are my waves!

MS. GRACE: Exactly, Olivia! Your hands are like Peter’s feet, and the wobbly blocks are like the waves. The picture of the tower is like Jesus, our steady goal.

LIAM: (Trying again, slowly looking at the picture) Okay, picture… picture… (He places a block, then sighs) It’s still hard not to peek.

CHLOE: Just keep trying, Liam! You’ve got this! Imagine Jesus is saying ‘Come!’ to the next block you need to place.

OLIVIA: (Suddenly distracted by a butterfly outside the window) Oh! Look at that bright yellow butterfly! (She turns to look, accidentally bumping the tower, making several blocks fall.) Awww, no! My tower crashed!

MS. GRACE: (Gently) See what happened there, Olivia? Your focus shifted, and things got a little messy. It’s okay, we can rebuild! Every time we get distracted, Jesus is ready to help us get back on track.

LIAM: (Looking at Olivia’s fallen blocks, then back at the picture) I get it now. If I look at the wobbling, or the falling blocks, or the butterfly, I’ll lose my way. But if I just keep looking at the finished tower… (He places a block with newfound confidence, then another, his gaze firm on the picture.) This is actually working!

CHLOE: That’s it, Liam! You’re building a solid foundation now! The ‘Wonder Tower’ needs you!

OLIVIA: (Picking up her blocks, a determined look on her face) Okay, no more butterflies for me! My eyes are glued to the Wonder Tower! (She squints dramatically at the picture, then carefully places a block, without peeking at her hands. She smiles.) Hey! That was much better!

MS. GRACE: (Clapping softly) Wonderful, everyone! You’re learning that when we keep our focus on our goalβ€”on Jesusβ€”we can do amazing things, even when the task feels tricky or things get a little wobbly. Keep building that faith, one focused block at a time!

LIAM: My tower is getting pretty tall now! And it’s not wobbly at all!

CHLOE: Mine too! We make a great team when we all remember to look at the picture!

OLIVIA: (Nodding vigorously) Yep! My eyes are officially ‘Wonder Tower’ locked! No more sinking blocks for this builder!

MS. GRACE: Fantastic! And remember, kids, just like with our Wonder Tower, keeping our eyes on Jesus means we can overcome any wobbly moment life throws our way! Give yourselves a big round of applause!

🎯 Active Learning Games & Craft Template

πŸ‘οΈ Eye Spy Focus Challenge

One child is ‘It’ and secretly chooses an object in the room. They give a clue related to the color, shape, or first letter. Other kids try to guess. The ‘It’ person must maintain eye contact with the chosen object the entire time they are giving clues. This helps kids practice sustained focus under playful pressure.

πŸšΆβ€β™‚οΈ Follow the Leader (Blindfolded Edition)

Have kids pair up. One child is blindfolded, and the other is their ‘guide.’ The guide must give clear, gentle verbal instructions (e.g., ‘Take three small steps forward,’ ‘Turn slightly right,’ ‘Step over this obstacle’) to lead their partner safely across a designated path with small, safe obstacles. Emphasize trust and listening to the guide’s voice, relating it to trusting Jesus.

🌊 Wave Walkers

Tape several long lines (like pathways) on the floor in a zig-zag pattern. Have kids try to walk from one end to the other without stepping off the line. For an added challenge, introduce ‘waves’ by having other kids gently wave streamers or blue fabric near their feet, simulating distractions. The goal is to keep eyes on the path and ignore the ‘waves’.

🎨 Themed Craft: 🌟 ‘Eyes on Jesus’ Focus Telescope

Supplies Needed:

  • Cardboard paper towel tubes (one per child)
  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Stickers, glitter, markers, crayons
  • Glue sticks or tape
  • String or yarn
  • Printouts of small pictures of Jesus (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Give each child a paper towel tube.
  2. They will decorate their tube with construction paper, stickers, and markers to make it look like a cool telescope.
  3. Encourage them to write ‘Eyes on Jesus’ or ‘Look to Jesus’ on it.
  4. If you have small pictures of Jesus, they can glue one inside the tube at one end.
  5. Once dry, punch a hole on each side near the top and thread a piece of string through to make a necklace.
  6. Explain that this ‘telescope’ is a reminder to always look to Jesus when things get tough.
