Lesson Overview & Target Scripture

🍎 Teacher’s Guide: This lesson helps kids understand that when life feels confusing or overwhelming, God’s Word, the Bible, provides clear direction. We’ll explore the story of the Israelites’ dramatic escape through the Red Sea and learn how God guided them, just as His Word guides us today. Children will discover that trusting God’s Word helps us find our way out of any tough situation.

πŸ“– Target Memory Verse: Psalm 119:105 (NLT)

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” (Psalm 119:105 (NLT))

“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” – Psalm 119:105 (NLT)

πŸ“¦ Materials Needed

  • A dark box or pillowcase (large enough to fit a small object)
  • A small toy car or figurine
  • A small flashlight or glow stick

Step-by-Step Object Lesson: πŸ’‘ Light Up My Path!

Children remember truth best when they see it demonstrated hands-on. This visual illustration uses simple everyday items to show kids that God’s Word is like a powerful light that shows us exactly where to go when things are dark or confusing..

πŸ”¬ Demonstration Instructions

First, gather the children around. Tell them you’re going to play a ‘lost and found’ game. Place the small toy car inside the dark box or pillowcase and close it. Ask the children if they can see the car or know which way it’s facing. Of course, they can’t! Explain that sometimes life feels just like thatβ€”dark and confusing, and we don’t know which way to turn. Now, shine the flashlight into the box or place the glow stick next to the car. Ask again if they can see it now. Wow! The light makes everything clear. Explain that God’s Word, the Bible, is exactly like this flashlight. When we read it and obey it, it shines a bright light on our path, showing us the right way out of tricky situations and guiding our feet.

Full Children’s Sermon Script: 🚢 God’s Amazing Way Out!

Have you ever tried to find your way through a giant corn maze? It can be super fun at first, but what happens if you get turned around and lose your map?

Suddenly, that fun adventure can feel a little scary and confusing, right? You just want to find the exit and get out!

Today, we’re talking about finding ‘The Great Escape’ when life feels confusing, and guess what? God’s Word always shows us the right way out!

πŸ“– Bible Story: Exodus 13:17-14:31

Long, long ago, God’s people, the Israelites, were slaves in Egypt. God sent Moses to lead them to freedom.

After many amazing miracles, the mighty Pharaoh finally let them go! The Israelites packed up everything, eager to leave.

But Pharaoh quickly changed his mind, gathering his entire army, chariots, and horsemen to chase after them!

The Israelites soon found themselves in a terrifying spot. The Red Sea was in front of them, huge and impossible to cross.

Behind them, Pharaoh’s powerful army was closing in, ready to drag them back into slavery. It looked like there was no way out!

They were trapped, scared, and started to grumble, thinking they were going to die right there.

But God had a plan! He told Moses to stretch out his staff over the sea.

Then, a mighty east wind blew all night, dividing the waters and making a dry path right through the middle of the Red Sea! God’s people walked across on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides.

When they were all safe on the other side, God closed the waters, stopping Pharaoh’s army completely! God literally made a ‘way out’ where there was no way!

πŸ–οΈ Sensory Engagement Element: During the story, have the children close their eyes and imagine the sound of roaring water and then the quiet sound of sand under their feet as they ‘walk through’ the dry ground. Then, imagine the crash as the water returns.

🌱 Modern Parable: 🌽 The Great Corn Maze Mix-Up!

“LEFT! No, RIGHT!

AHH!” Tristan shrieked as Lincoln, pushing a wheelbarrow full of picnic snacks, swerved sharply, nearly knocking over Justin. The sprawling corn maze stretched endlessly under the hot summer sun, its towering green walls a dizzying puzzle.

This was supposed to be their epic end-of-summer adventure, but it was quickly becoming a tangled mess!

Abby, usually the calmest of the group, squinted at the crumpled, sweat-stained map. “The map said ‘follow the scarecrow with the blue hat,’ but every scarecrow has a blue hat!” Hazel giggled nervously, tugging on Hasliegh’s shirt.

“I think we’ve seen that same patch of smashed corn three times already!” Ember just groaned, wishing they’d stayed home to play board games.

Suddenly, a gust of wind ripped through the stalks, snatching the map right out of Abby’s hand. It swirled high above the corn, a tiny white speck against the blue sky, before disappearing into the green abyss.

“Oh no!” everyone cried, their eyes wide with panic. The path ahead seemed to twist and turn into a thousand identical choices, and now they had no guide at all.

Justin, usually full of bright ideas, pointed to a thin spot in the corn. “Hey, why don’t we just push through there?

It looks like a shortcut! Who needs a map when we can just make our own path?” Lincoln hesitated, glancing at the dense, tangled stalks.

It seemed like the fastest way to freedom, but something felt wrong about forcing their way through.

Abby, remembering what her grandpa always said about tricky trails, gently shook her head. “Making our own path might get us more lost, Justin.

Sometimes, the right way is the one that’s already there, even if it feels longer.” She remembered her grandpa’s wisdom: ‘Always trust the signs, even if they’re tiny.’

Taking a deep breath, Lincoln led them back to the last recognizable landmarkβ€”a crooked fence post with a small, faded ‘EXIT’ arrow almost completely hidden by a vine. They had completely missed it in their haste!

Instead of pushing through, they decided to carefully follow the faint arrow, staying calm and looking for the next subtle clue. Step by slow step, they worked together, calling out directions to each other.

Finally, after what felt like forever, they emerged from the rustling green labyrinth, blinking in the bright sunlight. A big, colorful sign proclaimed, “YOU DID IT!” A cheer erupted from the group, high-fives flying.

They had made it out, not by crashing through, but by carefully following the hidden path and trusting the tiny, reliable signs. The picnic lunch tasted extra delicious after their great escape!

This triumph felt even better because they had trusted the right path, not their own impatient shortcut.

πŸ’‘ Lessons for Us & Core Truths

The Israelites faced a huge, impossible problem, but God showed them the way out! Just like God guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and fire by night, His Word, the Bible, is our guide today.

We know God is faithful because He kept His promise to rescue His people, proving His power and love. We can trust His Word completely because it’s been proven true throughout history, showing us the perfect path God has for our lives.

The purpose of remembering His works, like the Red Sea crossing, is to build our faith and remind us that God always makes a way, no matter how impossible things seem, if we listen to His voice through His Word.

🎭 Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: 🧭 The ‘Lost & Found’ Adventure Club

Bring the lesson to life with an easy-to-stage drama skit! Designed for characters COACH JENNA (Youth Leader), MAX (Enthusiastic kid, 9), LILY (Thoughtful kid, 10), SAM (A bit of a prankster, 8), it reinforces the story through engaging dialogue.

Characters:

  • COACH JENNA (Youth Leader)
  • MAX (Enthusiastic kid, 9)
  • LILY (Thoughtful kid, 10)
  • SAM (A bit of a prankster, 8)

[Setting: A club meeting room. A ‘Lost & Found’ sign is prominently displayed. Coach Jenna stands in front, holding a small, tangled ball of yarn.]

COACH JENNA: Alright, ‘Lost & Found Adventure Club’! Who’s ready for today’s challenge?

MAX: Me! Is it treasure hunting? I hope it’s treasure hunting!

LILY: Or maybe solving a mystery! I brought my magnifying glass!

SAM: (Whispering) I hid Coach Jenna’s car keys once. That was a good mystery.

COACH JENNA: (Chuckles) Not quite, Sam! Today, our adventure is about finding our way when we’re confused. See this yarn ball? It’s a huge knot!

MAX: That looks impossible to untangle!

COACH JENNA: Exactly! Sometimes life feels like this, right? Like you’re in a big, confusing maze and you don’t know which way to go. Max, tell us about a time you felt really lost or confused.

MAX: Oh! One time, me and my friends, Lincoln, Tristan, Justin, Abby, Hazel, Hasliegh, and Ember, went to a giant corn maze!

LILY: Ooh, corn mazes are fun!

MAX: It was! Until our map blew away! Whoosh! Gone! Justin wanted to just bash through the corn, saying, ‘Who needs a map?’

SAM: (Grinning) Sounds like a shortcut!

MAX: But Abby said, ‘No, the right way is the one that’s already there.’ So, we went back to a fence post and found this tiny, faded ‘EXIT’ arrow. It took ages, but we followed it, step by step, and finally got out! It felt way better than just smashing through.

LILY: That’s a great example! You trusted a tiny clue instead of a big, impulsive idea. It reminds me of the story of the Israelites escaping Egypt.

SAM: The Red Sea one? That sounds like a super-great escape!

COACH JENNA: It absolutely was, Sam! Lily, tell us more.

LILY: Well, the Israelites were running from Pharaoh’s army, and they were trapped! Red Sea in front, army behind. They must have been so confused and scared, thinking there was no way out.

MAX: Like us in the corn maze, but way scarier!

LILY: Exactly! But God told Moses to stretch out his staff, and BOOM! A huge wind blew, and the Red Sea split in half! They walked through on dry ground!

SAM: Wait, water walls? That’s awesome! No corn maze could ever do that!

COACH JENNA: It truly was awesome, Sam! God literally made a way out where there was no way. What do you think the Israelites learned that day about God?

MAX: That God is super powerful and always knows the way!

LILY: And that when things look impossible, God can do anything! He guided them with a cloud and fire, too.

COACH JENNA: Exactly! And guess what? God still guides us today! He doesn’t send a pillar of cloud, but He gives us something even better.

SAM: A super GPS?

COACH JENNA: (Smiling) Even better than a super GPS, Sam! He gave us His Word, the Bible! Our memory verse says, ‘Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.’ (Psalm 119:105)

MAX: So, the Bible is like our map in the corn maze, or God’s plan for the Red Sea!

LILY: It shows us the right way, even when we feel lost or confused.

COACH JENNA: Absolutely! When you’re making a tough choice, or don’t know what to do, don’t try to bash your own way through like Justin wanted to in the corn maze. Don’t panic like the Israelites almost did. Instead, open God’s Word. It will light up your path, just like a lamp in the dark, and show you God’s amazing way out!

SAM: So, the Bible helps us escape tricky situations? Cool!

COACH JENNA: It truly does, Sam. So, club members, let’s always remember to use God’s Word as our lamp and light. It’s the best guide you’ll ever have!

[Coach Jenna holds up a Bible, and the kids give a loud ‘HOORAY!’]

🎯 Active Learning Games & Craft Template

πŸ”¦ Blindfolded Obstacle Course

Set up a simple obstacle course using cones, chairs, or ropes. One child is blindfolded. Another child (the ‘guide’) must use only verbal instructions (like ‘take two steps forward,’ ‘turn left,’ ‘step over the rope’) to guide the blindfolded child through the course. Emphasize how important clear directions are. Switch roles so everyone gets a turn being guided and guiding.

πŸ—ΊοΈ Path Finder Relay

Divide kids into two teams. At one end of the room, place a large picture or object representing ‘God’s Word’ (e.g., a Bible). At the other end, place a ‘goal’ mark. Each team member must race to the ‘Bible,’ pick up a ‘truth’ (a pre-written card with a simple Bible truth like ‘God loves me’), carry it back to their team, and then run to the goal. The first team to have all members touch the ‘Bible’ and reach the ‘goal’ wins. This shows ‘finding truth’ and letting it guide you.

πŸ’‘ Follow the Light

Play this game in a slightly darkened room. One teacher holds a flashlight and creates a ‘path’ by shining the light on the floor, moving it slowly. The children must follow the light exactly, stepping only where the light shines. If they step off the light, they are ‘lost’ and must restart. This reinforces the idea of God’s Word being a lamp for our feet.

🎨 Themed Craft: πŸ“œ My Scripture Scroll

Supplies Needed:

  • Brown construction paper or cardstock
  • Two small wooden dowels or craft sticks per child
  • Glue or tape
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
  • Our memory verse printed out (Psalm 119:105)

Instructions:

  1. Give each child a piece of brown paper.
  2. Have them write or glue the memory verse, ‘Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path’ (Psalm 119:105), in the center.
  3. Decorate the paper with lamps, flashlights, or paths.
  4. Once decorated, carefully glue or tape one dowel to each end of the paper.
  5. Roll one side of the paper around its dowel, and then roll the other side inwards to meet it, creating a small scroll.
  6. Kids can unroll their scroll to read their memory verse, just like ancient scrolls were read, reminding them to ‘unroll’ God’s Word every day for guidance.
