Wow, have you ever seen something really strong? Maybe a giant tree whose roots go super deep, or a towering skyscraper that seems to touch the clouds?
These things stand firm!
Life can be a lot like that, full of exciting adventures, but sometimes we face challenges, big or small. What if I told you that Jesus gave us the secret to staying strong, no matter what ‘storms’ come our way?
Today, we’re diving into an amazing story Jesus told, a story about two builders, two houses, and one really important secret to having a life that’s rock-solid.
📖 Bible Story: Matthew 7:24-27
Jesus once told a parable, a special story with a deep meaning. He talked about two different builders.
One of these builders was very wise. When he decided to build a house, he didn’t just pick any spot.
He dug down deep, past all the loose dirt and pebbles, until he found a strong, firm rock!
On that solid rock, the wise builder carefully constructed his house. He knew that the foundation was the most important part!
But then there was another builder, a foolish one. He was in a hurry and didn’t want to do all that hard work digging.
Instead, the foolish builder simply built his house right on top of the loose sand. It looked good for a while, just like the wise man’s house.
But then, a terrible storm came! The rain poured down, the floods rose, and the winds blew hard against both houses.
The house built on the rock stood firm and didn’t fall, but the house built on sand collapsed with a great crash!

“Alright class, your STEM challenge today is to build a freestanding tower using only newspaper rods and wooden blocks that can hold a heavy dictionary!” Mrs. Davis announced.
Alice, Joseph, Danny, Brennan, Tristan, and Hazel quickly gathered around their group table, buzzing with excitement.
Alice and Joseph immediately opened Mrs. Davis’s instruction blueprint.
“Rule number one,” Alice read carefully, “we must cross-brace the bottom foundation beams with wood glue before adding any height.” Joseph nodded in agreement, measuring out the base supports. “If our base is rock-solid, the rest of the tower won’t wobble.”
Danny and Brennan, however, wanted to build the tallest tower in the room right away. “Come on, gluing takes too long!” Danny laughed, grabbing a roll of masking tape.
Brennan agreed, “Yeah, tape is way faster! Let’s stack it high right now!” Tristan and Hazel were caught in the middle.
Hazel reminded them, “Mrs. Davis warned us that tape stretches under heavy weight,” but Tristan admitted, “It does look pretty cool going up so fast.”
When test time arrived, Mrs. Davis placed the dictionary atop Danny and Brennan’s fast, taped tower.
*CRACK!* The taped joints buckled instantly, sending books sliding across the floor. Meanwhile, the second tower—built carefully by Alice, Joseph, and Hazel with glued, cross-braced foundational supports—held the heavy dictionary without even shaking.
Tristan and Danny smiled sheepishly, with Brennan admitting, “Next time, we’re listening to the blueprint from the start! Building on a solid foundation really is the only way to stay standing.”

🎯 Active Learning Games & Craft Template
🚧 Foundation Freeze Tag
Kids run around in a designated area. When the leader yells ‘Storm!’ and points to a child, that child freezes. To unfreeze, two other children must link arms around the ‘frozen’ child, forming a ‘rock-solid’ foundation. This emphasizes teamwork and building support.
🏗️ Rock-Solid Relay
Divide kids into teams. Each team has a pile of building blocks (LEGOs, Duplos, or paper cups) at one end of the room and a ‘foundation’ (a sturdy mat or a small cardboard square) at the other. On ‘Go,’ the first child races to the blocks, picks up one, runs to the foundation, places it down, and races back. The next child does the same. The goal is to build the tallest, most stable tower on their foundation within a time limit, emphasizing thoughtful building.
🧠 Wise Builder’s Challenge
Provide each child or small group with a small stack of paper cups. Give them a challenge: ‘Build a tower that can withstand a strong gust of wind (leader blowing lightly).’ The catch: before they build, they must listen to one ‘wise instruction’ (e.g., ‘only build in triangles,’ ‘make your base wider than the top’). See which groups listened and built the strongest tower.
🎨 Themed Craft: 🏡 My Rock-Solid House
Supplies Needed:
- Cardstock or construction paper (for house shapes)
- Scissors
- Glue sticks or liquid glue
- Small pebbles or gravel
- Sand or brown sugar (for ‘sand’ foundation)
- Small paper plates or sturdy cardboard squares (two per child)
- Crayons or markers
Instructions:
- ✏️ Give each child two paper plates/cardboard squares. One will be their ‘rock’ foundation, the other their ‘sand’ foundation.
- 🎨 Have them draw a simple house shape on cardstock, cut it out, and decorate it.
- 🪨 On one paper plate, have them glue down a layer of pebbles or gravel to create a ‘rocky’ foundation. Once dry, they can glue their house onto it.
- 🏖️ On the second paper plate, have them spread glue and sprinkle sand or brown sugar over it, creating a ‘sandy’ foundation. Once dry, they can glue their second house onto it (or the first house if they only made one).
- 🗣️ Discuss which house feels more stable and connect it back to hearing and obeying Jesus’ words.
