Hey everyone! 👋 Have you ever gotten a brand-new pair of shoes? Woah, that feeling, right? Or maybe it was the first day of school with all new supplies? A fresh notebook, shiny pencils… Ah, it just feels so good to start fresh! There’s something super exciting about turning over a new page, isn’t there?
Well, guess what? Today, we’re going to talk about the ultimate fresh start! Our Bible verse, 2 Corinthians 5:17, tells us something amazing: ‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!’ Think about that for a second! It’s like God doesn’t just give you a new pair of shoes; He gives you a whole new identity! And there’s no better example of this incredible truth than the story of a man named Saul.
Saul was, well, let’s just say he was NOT a fan of Jesus’ followers. In fact, he was doing everything he could to stop them! But God had a totally different plan for Saul, a plan for a fresh start so HUGE, it changed his name and his whole life forever! Get ready for an adventure!

Modern Parable: 🌳 The New Church Adventure
The air buzzed with a mix of excitement and a little bit of confusion! Mrs. Kiya gathered the children’s ministry crew – Abby, Ember, Cooper, Madeline, Lincoln, and Lawson – for a big announcement. “Kids, today’s the day we get to see our brand-new church building!” she beamed. Abby bounced on her toes, Ember clapped, but Lawson looked down. Their old church, while cozy, had a really cool gym where they’d played countless games of dodgeball. How could anything be better?
As they walked through the shiny new doors, Madeline gasped at the bright, colorful kids’ space, but Cooper muttered, “It’s not the same… Where’s the squeaky gym floor?” Lawson, usually full of jokes, felt a heavy cloud over him. All his favorite memories were tied to the old place. Abby tried to pull him towards a super-cool-looking play area, but Lawson just shook his head. “I miss the old church. This just feels… too new.” A wave of doubt started to spread among a few of the other kids.
Mrs. Kiya, noticing Lawson’s slumped shoulders, knelt down. “Lawson, I get it. Change can be hard. We made so many wonderful memories in our old church, didn’t we?” Lawson nodded slowly. “But guess what? This new building isn’t just about new walls. It’s about having more space to welcome new friends, more classrooms to learn about God, and, yes, a super awesome playground to make brand new memories!” She pointed to the brightly colored slides and swings. Suddenly, the possibility of new adventures started to sparkle in Lawson’s eyes.
The kids spent the rest of the day exploring, laughing, and yes, even playing on the brand-new playground! They realized that while the old church held precious memories, this new church was a fresh start, a chance for even more people to come and learn about Jesus. Just like God gave them this new place to grow, He also gives us a fresh start in our hearts when we choose to follow Him, turning over a new page in our story!

- One crumpled piece of paper (or a paper with scribbles/mistakes on it)
- One fresh, blank piece of paper

Step-by-Step Guide:
Hold up the crumpled or scribbled-on piece of paper. ‘Kids, imagine this paper is like our life before Jesus. Maybe we’ve made some mistakes, said some unkind words, or done things we wish we hadn’t. (Crumple it up more or point to scribbles.) This paper looks pretty messy, doesn’t it? It’s hard to make something beautiful out of this now.’ Pause for responses. ‘But guess what? When we ask Jesus to come into our hearts, He doesn’t just try to smooth out the old, messy paper. Oh no! He gives us something totally new!’ Dramatically toss the crumpled paper aside and reveal the fresh, blank piece of paper. ‘He gives us a clean slate, a brand new start! We become a ‘new creation’ in Him, just like our Bible verse says! The old is gone, and the new is here!’ Hold up the blank paper proudly. ‘What amazing things can we draw on this new, clean page for Jesus?’

📖 Scripture Reading: 📖 Acts 9:1-19 (Saul’s Transformation)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
So, imagine this: Saul was a super-religious guy, but he really, really disliked anyone who followed Jesus. He thought they were wrong, and he was determined to stop them. He even threw them in jail! Woah! One day, Saul was on his way to a city called Damascus, with official papers to arrest even more Christians. He was marching along, feeling pretty important, when suddenly… ZAP! A brilliant light from heaven flashed all around him!
Saul fell to the ground, totally blinded! Then, a voice boomed, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ Saul, terrified, asked, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ And the voice said, ‘I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.’ Can you believe it? Jesus Himself was talking to Saul! Saul was led, blind, into Damascus. For three days, he couldn’t see, and he didn’t eat or drink. Meanwhile, Jesus spoke to a good man named Ananias, telling him to go find Saul and heal him!
Ananias was scared! ‘Lord, Saul is a bad guy!’ But Jesus assured him. Ananias obeyed, found Saul, laid his hands on him, and immediately something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again! He was filled with the Holy Spirit, got baptized, and guess what? This man, who used to hate Christians, immediately started preaching about Jesus in the synagogues! His name even changed to Paul! What an amazing fresh start!
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: 👉 Teacher, at the point in the story where Saul is blinded, ask kids to close their eyes for 10 seconds and imagine not being able to see anything. Then, have them open their eyes and discuss what it felt like, reinforcing how amazing it was for Saul to gain his sight back, symbolizing his new spiritual understanding.

Wow, what an incredible story of transformation! Just like Saul, who became Paul, God wants to give *us* a fresh start too. When we choose to follow Jesus, our ‘old’ ways, our mistakes, our sins—they don’t disappear into thin air, but Jesus forgives them and washes them away! He makes us a ‘new creation.’ This isn’t just a wish; it’s a promise from God Himself! How do we know God is faithful? Because He kept His promise to transform Paul, and He keeps His promise to transform us too! He doesn’t just change our actions; He changes our hearts, giving us a brand-new desire to follow Him. This is why we can trust His Word – because we see His power and faithfulness throughout history, from Saul to us today!

EMBER: So, it’s not about forgetting the old, but making new, good things?

MRS. KIYA: You got it, Lawson! That’s what a fresh start is all about. God doesn’t erase who you were; He makes you new and gives you new purpose!
ABBY: Let’s make some new memories! Who wants to race me to the rainbow tunnel?
MADELINE: Me! Me! (Dashes towards the playground door)
COOPER: (Grinning, dropping his arms) Alright, maybe a rock climbing wall IS pretty cool. But no squeaky floor?

🦋 Transformation Charades
Write down various ‘old’ things that become ‘new’ (e.g., a caterpillar to a butterfly, a seed to a plant, a dirty room to a clean room, a sad face to a happy face, Saul to Paul). Divide kids into two teams. One player from a team picks a slip and acts out the transformation for their team to guess. No talking! The team that guesses the most transformations wins. Emphasize how God helps us transform!
📜 Memory Verse Scramble
Write each word of 2 Corinthians 5:17 on separate cards or pieces of paper. Mix them up! Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a set of scrambled words. The first team to correctly arrange the verse wins! You can make it a race or a collaborative effort.
🏃 Fresh Start Relay
Set up a simple relay race. At one end, have a ‘messy’ station (e.g., a few scattered blocks, a crumpled paper). At the other end, have a ‘fresh start’ station (e.g., a clean paper, a fresh marker). Kids race to the messy station, quickly ‘clean’ or ‘fix’ one item, then run to the fresh start station to make a mark on the clean paper, symbolizing their fresh start. First team to have all members contribute to the ‘fresh start’ wins. Connect to how Jesus helps us clean up our ‘mess’ and start fresh.
🎨 Themed Craft: 🦋 My New Creation Butterfly
Supplies Needed:
- Paper plates (one per child)
- Construction paper (various colors)
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Glue sticks or liquid glue
Instructions:
- Have each child take a paper plate. This will be the body of their butterfly.
- On one side of the plate, have them draw or write things that represent their ‘old self’ or things they want to leave behind (e.g., ‘being mean’, ‘not listening’, ‘sad feelings’). They can even crumple a small piece of paper and glue it there to represent ‘old mess’.
- On the other side of the plate, have them draw or write things that represent their ‘new self’ in Christ (e.g., ‘kindness’, ‘joy’, ‘sharing’, ‘helping’). Encourage bright colors and positive images!
- Help kids cut out two large ‘wing’ shapes from colorful construction paper. They can decorate these wings with more ‘new creation’ ideas or patterns.
- Glue the wings to the back of the paper plate (the ‘new self’ side).
- They can add antennae using small strips of construction paper.
- Discuss how the butterfly starts as a caterpillar and transforms, just like we transform into a ‘new creation’ with Jesus!
