š¢ Well, thatās exactly what our Bible story today is about! Our main idea is: ‘I can prepare my heart and my world for Jesus, just like John did.’ Today, weāre going to meet an amazing man named John the Baptist, whose whole life was about getting people ready for someone even more amazing ā Jesus! His message, found in **Luke 3:4**, tells us to ‘Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight trails for him.’
šŗļø Think about it like this: if you were expecting a king or queen to visit your town, you wouldnāt want them to trip over loose stones or get stuck in a muddy road, would you? Youād want everything perfect! That’s a bit like what John the Baptist was doing, but for people’s *hearts* instead of roads. He was a ‘Trail Blazer’ for Jesus!

š The school bell screamed, signaling the start of the ‘Annual Junior Obstacle Course Race!’ Killian, Anthony, Lincoln, Henry Sawyer, and Millie were all buzzing with excitement. This wasn’t just any race; it was legendary! Every year, the winning team got to help plan the end-of-year carnival. But first, they had to prepare their section of the track. Anthony was all about speed, Killian was a master strategist, Lincoln was super strong, Henry Sawyer was amazing at cheering people on, and Millie? Millie was the planner, the one who always thought ahead. ‘Okay, team!’ Millie announced, ‘We need to clear this path! Big rocks here, muddy puddles there… itās a disaster!’
š Killian, usually so focused, saw some friends messing around by the creek instead of clearing their own section. ‘Hey guys! Come hang out with us!’ they shouted. Anthony, caught up in the fun, started to wander over. ‘Maybe a quick break won’t hurt, Millie,’ he shrugged. Wait, think about that for a second! This was *their* chance to win! Total wipeout!’ Henry Sawyer added, ‘And remember how much work we put into practicing the jumps? That’s all for nothing if we don’t clear the path first!’ Anthony and Killian looked at each other. They knew Millie and Henry Sawyer were right. They buckled down, pushing aside fallen branches, smoothing out bumpy dirt, and carefully marking the safest route. Supplies Needed:
- A long piece of string or yarn (about 10-15 feet)
- Several small objects (e.g., blocks, toy cars, crumpled paper balls, small plastic cups)
- Two chairs or cones
Step-by-Step Guide:
šāāļø Set up two chairs/cones a good distance apart (10-15 feet). Lay the string on the floor between them, representing a ‘path’. Now, scatter the small objects all over and around the string. ‘Okay everyone!’ you’ll announce, ‘Imagine this path is our heart and these objects are all the things that get in the way of us being ready for Jesus ā maybe anger, selfishness, not listening, or even just being too busy! Our challenge is to clear the path, making it smooth and straight!’ Have kids take turns carefully removing the objects from the path, explaining what each removed item might represent (e.g., ‘This block is like being stubborn, taking it out helps us listen!’). Once the path is clear, have one child ‘walk’ the path, demonstrating how much easier it is. Can you believe the difference? Explain that John the Baptist did something similar, telling people how to ‘clear their hearts’ so they could truly welcome Jesus.

“As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: āA voice of one calling in the wilderness, āPrepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.'” (Luke 3:4)
šļø Way back when, in the desert wilderness, a man named John started preaching. He wasnāt like other people! He wore clothes made of camel hair and ate wild honey and locusts. Can you imagine that outfit? His message was simple, yet powerful: ‘Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near!’ Repent means to turn away from bad things and turn towards God. People flocked to him, coming from all over to hear his words and be baptized in the Jordan River. They knew something big was happening!
š John told them, ‘Get ready! Make your lives smooth for the Lord!’ He wasn’t talking about clearing physical roads, but clearing their hearts! He taught that if their lives were crooked with bad choices, they needed to make them straight. If their hearts were full of bumps like pride or selfishness, they needed to flatten them out with humility and kindness. He was telling them that a very special visitor was coming, and they needed to be ready for Him!
š The people were so amazed by John, some even wondered if HE was the Messiah, the special King they had been waiting for! But John humbly said, ‘I baptize you with water, but one is coming after me who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire!’ He knew his job was to point to Jesus, not to be the main event himself. John was the ultimate Trail Blazer, making sure everyone knew Jesus was coming!
šļø Sensory Engagement Element: š During the story, pass around a small container of honey (or a honey stick) for kids to smell and perhaps have a tiny taste (check for allergies first!). Ask them, ‘What do you think it would be like to eat wild honey like John?’ This helps connect them to his simple, wilderness life.

š” So, what does John the Baptist’s story mean for us today? Well, John showed us that preparing for Jesus isn’t a one-time thing; it’s a daily choice! We believe God is faithful because He kept His promise to send a Savior, and John played a key part in that plan. We can trust God’s Word because the prophets, like Isaiah, foretold John’s role hundreds of years before he was born, and it all came true! We remember God’s works, like sending John, because they remind us of His love and how He always makes a way for us to connect with Him. We prepare our hearts by choosing kindness, saying sorry when we’re wrong, and sharing God’s love. KILLIAN: Itās like when you try to rush through your homework just to play games. You end up with mistakes, right? Thatās a ‘bumpy path’ for your grades!
ANTHONY: (Puts down the ball, looks at the path) Okay, okay, I get it. No kicking. So, what do we do with theseā¦ ‘obstacles’?
MILLIE: (Points) We carefully remove them! These ‘weeds’ are like grumpy thoughts. Pull them out! These ‘rocks’ are like forgetting to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Move them aside! Let’s work together!
ANTHONY: (Starts carefully picking up paper rocks) So, being careful with these little thingsā¦ thatās like preparing my heart to be nice?
KILLIAN: You got it! And when youāre nice, it makes it easier for others to be nice to you. It clears the path for friendship!
MILLIE: Look, if we do a great job, Ms. Gracia will see how much we care. And that makes *her* happy, and it makes *us* feel good too!
[Sound of footsteps approaching]
ANTHONY: Uh oh! Footsteps! Is that Ms. Gracia already?
KILLIAN: Weāre almost done with the path!
[Ms. Gracia enters, smiling. The path is now mostly clear, but there are still a few stray items.]
MS. GRACIA: Well hello, wonderful Garden Club members! I hear you’ve been working hard.
MILLIE: (A little breathless) Ms. Gracia! We’re almost finished clearing the path for you! We wanted everything to be perfect!
MS. GRACIA: (Walks slowly down the path, observing) I see that. And it looks much better than before. But tell me, what does a ‘clear path’ really mean to you?
ANTHONY: (Proudly) It means no tripping hazards! And showing you we care!
KILLIAN: And that we respect you, Ms. Gracia. Like when John the Baptist told people to make their hearts ready for Jesus.
MS. GRACIA: (Nods warmly) Ah, John the Baptist! A very wise man. He knew that true preparation isn’t just about cleaning up the outside, but changing our hearts on the inside. When you clear this path, you’re not just moving rocks, are you? Youāre practicing patience, teamwork, and thoughtfulness. Youāre preparing yourselves, not just the garden.
MILLIE: So, even if thereās a tiny weed left, if our hearts are ready, thatās what really matters?
MS. GRACIA: Precisely. Because a ready heart makes a ready person, ready to welcome anyone, and especially ready to welcome the love and teachings of Jesus. You all are doing a splendid job of being ‘Preparation Crew’ members, both for the garden and for your hearts. Keep up the amazing work, little Trail Blazers!
ANTHONY: (Grinning) We will! Ready for anything, and ready for Jesus!

š£ Path-Clearing Relay Race
šāāļø Divide the kids into two or more teams. Place a ‘start’ line and an ‘end’ line. Scatter various soft classroom items (beanbags, soft balls, paper wads) in the path between the lines for each team. On ‘Go!’, the first person on each team must race to their ‘path’, clear all the items to the side, then race back, tagging the next person. The next person runs down the cleared path to the end line and back. The first team to have everyone run their now-clear path wins! Emphasize the importance of a clear path.
š The Whispering Message
š Kids sit in a circle. The teacher whispers the memory verse (‘Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him.’) to the first child. That child whispers it to the next, and so on around the circle. The last child says the message out loud. Discuss how important it is to have a clear message, just like John had a clear message about Jesus. Repeat with a different ‘message’ that includes distractions (e.g., ‘Prepare the way for the Lord and eat a snack, make straight paths for him and wear a hat’), showing how distractions make the message unclear.
āØ Clean Up Crew Challenge
š§¹ Before the game, secretly ‘mess up’ a small area of the classroom with a few items (e.g., scattered papers, a few blocks on the floor, a pencil dropped). Divide kids into small groups. Give each group a ‘mission’ to ‘prepare’ a specific area for Jesus’s visit. The ‘preparation’ involves finding and tidying up any messes they see. The group that has their area ‘ready’ (cleanest and most organized) the fastest wins! Discuss how cleaning up our physical space can be like cleaning up our hearts.
šØ Themed Craft: š± ‘Ready for Jesus’ Path Markers
Supplies Needed:
- Strips of brown construction paper or cardstock (about 2×8 inches)
- Markers or crayons
- Stickers or glitter glue (optional)
- Popsicle sticks or pipe cleaners
- Tape or glue
Instructions:
- šØ Give each child a strip of paper.
- Explain that they are going to make ‘path markers’ that remind them to prepare for Jesus.
- On one side, they can draw a picture of a ‘straight path’ (like a clear road or a happy, kind face).
- On the other side, they can write ‘Ready for Jesus!’ or the memory verse: ‘Prepare the way for the Lord.
- Make straight trails for him.’ Encourage them to decorate their marker with colors, stickers, or glitter.
- Once decorated, help them tape or glue a popsicle stick or pipe cleaner to the back of the paper so they can stand it up.
- They can take these home to put on their desk or nightstand as a reminder to always be ready for Jesus in their hearts!
