Alright everyone, gather ’round! Look at these two cups of water. Do they look the same? (Allow kids to observe and agree.) They do! Now, I’m going to take this tiny bit of salt – just one teaspoon – and stir it into *one* of these cups. (Stir the salt into one cup, explaining that salt can dissolve and disappear, but its effect remains.) You can’t even see it anymore, right? It looks just like the other cup. But is it the same? (Most will say no.) Now, here’s the fun part! I have two crackers here. I’m going to dip one cracker into the plain water, and the other cracker into the salty water. (Demonstrate, then offer a small piece of each cracker to a couple of brave volunteers, or just describe the difference if sharing isn’t feasible.) Woah! What’s the difference? ““You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and walked on. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden.”” (Matthew 5:13-14 (NIrV))
Imagine Jesus sitting on a hillside, His disciples gathered around Him, and a huge crowd listening intently. The sun was shining, maybe a gentle breeze rustling the leaves. Jesus looked at His friends, and He looked beyond them to all of us who would follow Him, and He said with such power, “You are the salt of the earth!” Woah! Think about that! Salt! He didn’t say, ‘You are bland oatmeal’ or ‘You are just a tiny pebble.’ He said ‘salt’!
Now, back in those days, salt wasn’t just for making your fries taste good. It was super important! It kept food from spoiling, helped things heal, and yes, it made everything taste better. Jesus was telling His followers, ‘You have the power to stop bad things from spreading, to bring healing, and to make the world a much more flavorful, better place!’ But He also gave a warning: ‘If salt loses its saltiness, it’s no longer good for anything!’ Meaning, we have to keep our ‘saltiness,’ keep living for Him!
But Jesus wasn’t done! He then declared, “You are the light of the world!” Can you believe it? Light! A city built on a hill cannot be hidden, He said. Just like a bright lamp can chase away the darkness, Jesus said His followers – that’s us! – are meant to shine so brightly that everyone can see God’s goodness through us. We’re not meant to be hidden under a bushel basket; we’re meant to be out there, shining for all to see!
So, Jesus called His followers, and us, two incredibly powerful things: salt and light! These weren’t just nice compliments; they were a call to action. They were a reminder of the incredible purpose God has for each one of us – to be the good, to be the hope, to be the love that flavors and illuminates the world!
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: 👉 Teacher, after reading the Bible story, have a tiny pinch of salt for each child to put on their tongue. Ask them: ‘What did that tiny bit of salt do? It made you NOTICE it, right? That’s how your actions can be noticed for good!’

🔦 Shine Your Light Tag!
Get ready to shine! One person is ‘Darkness’ (they wear a blindfold or keep their eyes closed, but are guided by an adult for safety). Everyone else is a ‘Light’ who must navigate the playing area (marked by boundaries). The goal for ‘Light’ players is to avoid being tagged by ‘Darkness.’ If tagged, a ‘Light’ player ‘dims’ and must freeze. A frozen ‘Light’ player can be unfrozen by another ‘Light’ player giving them a high-five and saying, ‘Shine Bright!’ The game continues until all ‘Lights’ are frozen or a time limit is reached. Emphasize teamwork and helping others shine!
🧂 Flavor Spreader Relay!
Divide the class into two or three teams. Each team lines up. At the other end of the room, place a bowl with cotton balls (representing flavor/goodness) and an empty bowl for each team. The first player from each team must use a spoon (or their hands, carefully!) to carry one ‘flavor’ cotton ball across the room, deposit it in their team’s empty bowl, and race back to tag the next person. The goal is to ‘spread’ as much flavor as possible. Emphasize that it’s not about speed, but about spreading goodness carefully and effectively, just like we spread God’s love.
💡 Hidden Light Seek!
Before the game, hide several small flashlights (turned OFF) around the classroom. Divide kids into teams. Explain that ‘light’ (God’s love, kindness) is all around us, but sometimes we have to look for it, or help others see it. On ‘Go!’, teams race to find the hidden flashlights. Once a flashlight is found, they bring it to the teacher, who turns it ON and places it on a central ‘Shining Station.’ The team with the most ‘found lights’ (or the team who finds the designated ‘big light’) wins. Discuss how we can ‘find’ God’s light in different situations.
🎨 Themed Craft: 🌟 ‘Shine My Light’ Jar
Supplies Needed:
- Small clear glass jars (or plastic cups if glass is not safe/available) per child
- Tissue paper squares (various bright colors)
- White school glue or Mod Podge
- Paintbrushes or foam applicators
- Battery-operated tea lights (one per child)
- Optional: glitter, stickers, permanent markers
Instructions:
- Alright, Super Shakers! Today we’re going to make our very own ‘Shine My Light’ jars!
- First, take your clear jar. This is like your life, ready to shine!
- Next, take your colorful tissue paper squares. These represent all the ways you can show God’s love – kindness, joy, helpfulness, forgiveness! Take a paintbrush, dip it in the glue, and brush a thin layer onto a small section of your jar.
- Carefully press a tissue paper square onto the glue. Repeat, overlapping the squares, until your entire jar is covered in a beautiful mosaic of color! You can even add some glitter or stickers if you like!
- Once all the tissue paper is on, brush another thin layer of glue over the top to seal it all in. This makes it smooth and shiny.
- Let your jar dry completely. While it’s drying, you can write words like ‘Kindness,’ ‘Love,’ ‘Joy,’ or ‘Peace’ on the outside with permanent markers.
- Finally, when your jar is dry, carefully place a battery-operated tea light inside. Ta-da! Now you have your very own ‘Shine My Light’ jar, a reminder that God wants you to be a beautiful light, bringing His colors and goodness to the world!
