🍎 Teacher’s Guide: This lesson explores the profound truth of forgiveness through Jesus’ parable of the unforgiving servant. Kids will grasp that because God has forgiven our immense ‘debt’ of sin through Jesus, we are called to extend that same mercy and grace to others. The main takeaway is that forgiving others isn’t just a good idea, it’s a direct reflection of the incredible forgiveness we’ve already received from God.

Alright Super Kids! Let me ask you, have you ever done something that you IMMEDIATELY regretted? Like, oops! Maybe you accidentally broke something, or said something not-so-nice, or forgot a super important chore? You know that feeling, right? That little knot in your stomach? You just wish you could hit a giant ‘reset’ button and make it all go away! Can you relate to that? I bet you can!

Well, today, we’re going to talk about something even more powerful than a reset button: forgiveness! It’s a HUGE idea, and it’s something Jesus talked a lot about. Our main idea today is a super important one: **We forgive much because Jesus forgave everything!** Think about that for a second. It’s not just about saying ‘sorry’ or ‘it’s okay.’ It’s about a deep, heart-changing kind of freedom! Aha!

And Jesus, our amazing teacher, once told a powerful story, a parable, to help us understand just how incredible and important forgiveness really is. It’s a story about a king, two servants, and a debt so massive it would make your head spin! Let’s dive into God’s Word!

“Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?'” – Matthew 18:32-33 (NLT)

The school bell shrieked, signaling the most anticipated moment of the day: RECESS! Watson, Ellison, Lawson, Ember, Abby, and Bellamy burst onto the blacktop, ready for their daily dodgeball championship. Watson, known for his flashy moves but sometimes clumsy feet, was on a team with Ember and Ellison. Ellison, their team captain, was super serious about winning and had drilled them all week on strategy. “Alright team,” Ellison barked, “Remember the ‘Dodge and Dash’ maneuver! We can totally win this!”

The game started with a whirlwind of red rubber balls flying everywhere! Watson, caught up in the excitement, tried a super fancy spin move to avoid a ball, but instead, he tripped! WOAH! He tumbled right into Ember, sending her flying into a puddle of muddy water. Not just any puddle, but the one where Ember had carefully placed her brand-new, signed, limited-edition ‘Cosmic Unicorns’ trading card before the game. It was ruined! Ellison, seeing their star player soaked and upset, threw his hands up. “Watson! Seriously?! You just cost us the game AND ruined Ember’s card! That card was worth a fortune to her!” Ellison fumed, clearly not ready to forgive Watson’s epic blunder.

Watson felt awful, his face burning crimson. He tried to apologize, but Ember was teary-eyed and Ellison just shook his head. Just then, Abby, who had seen the whole thing, walked over. “Hold on, Ellison,” she said gently. “Remember last week when you accidentally knocked over Lawson’s incredible Lego castle? He was so upset, but he forgave you because you said you were really sorry and helped him rebuild it.” Ellison paused, thinking about his own big mistake, and how grateful he’d been for Lawson’s kindness.

Suddenly, Ellison looked at Watson. He saw Watson’s genuine regret, not just the muddy mess. “Okay, Watson,” he sighed, a tiny smile starting to form. “It stinks about Ember’s card, but… I guess everyone messes up sometimes. You owe Ember a super big apology and maybe an extra chore, but I forgive you, man. And Ember, I bet Watson will help you find a new, even better card!” This moment of remembering his own past mistakes, and the kindness he received, allowed Ellison to cancel the ‘debt’ of anger and frustration, paving the way for friendship and a clean start. It showed that remembering the grace *we’ve* been given helps us give grace to others!

🥚 Object Lesson Outline

Core Point: To visually represent the overwhelming size of our ‘sin debt’ and the incredible freedom of God’s complete forgiveness.

Supplies Needed:

• Lots of scrap paper (old worksheets, printer paper)
• Masking tape or scotch tape
• Markers or crayons

Step-by-Step Guide:

Gather the kids and explain that we all make mistakes, or ‘owe’ apologies, or sometimes even harm others – these are like little ‘debts’ we carry. Give each child a piece of scrap paper and a marker. Ask them to quietly think of a small mistake they’ve made this week (like forgetting to do a chore, saying something unkind, or not sharing) and write it down. Don’t let anyone see it! Next, have them crumple their paper into a tight ball. Now, here’s the fun part! Ask them to tape their ‘debt balls’ together, one by one, forming a bigger and bigger ball. Encourage them to keep adding to it, wrapping tape around it, until it becomes one giant, lumpy, heavy ‘Gigantic Debt Ball.’ Woah, look at how big that got! It’s heavy, right? Explain that our sins, even small ones, add up and become a huge burden, a massive ‘debt’ we can never pay back on our own. Hold the big ball up. “But guess what? Just like the king in our story completely cancelled the servant’s debt, Jesus did something even more amazing! He paid our entire sin debt!” Then, dramatically and carefully, begin to tear the ‘Gigantic Debt Ball’ apart, piece by piece, as you talk about how Jesus’ sacrifice means our debt is completely cancelled. The ball, once heavy and imposing, is now just scattered pieces of paper. “Poof! Debt CANCELED!”

📖 Scripture Reading: 📖 Matthew 18:21-35 (The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant)

“Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?'” (Matthew 18:32-33 (NLT))

One day, Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples, asked a really good question: “Lord, how many times should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?” Peter probably thought he was being super generous, but Jesus’ answer was astounding! He said, “Not seven times, but seventy-seven times!” Woah! That means… always! Then Jesus told a story about a king and a servant who owed him a jaw-dropping amount of money – ten thousand talents! This wasn’t just a lot; it was an IMPOSSIBLE amount for a servant to ever pay back, like billions of dollars today! The king decided to sell the servant, his family, and everything he owned to pay the debt.

But the servant fell to his knees, begging for mercy. “Please, be patient with me,” he cried, “and I will pay it all back!” The king, filled with compassion, did something incredible: he *canceled* the entire debt! Every single penny! Can you believe it? The servant was free! But here’s where the story takes a turn: that same servant, after being forgiven so much, went out and found another servant who owed him a tiny amount – a hundred denarii. That’s like a few days’ wages, compared to the king’s debt which was a lifetime’s wages!

The first servant grabbed the second servant, choking him, demanding his money back! The poor man begged, just like the first servant had begged the king, “Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.” But the first servant refused! He had the man thrown into prison until the small debt was paid. When the other servants saw this, they were heartbroken and furious. They told the king everything. The king was enraged! He called in the wicked servant and said, “You wicked servant! I canceled all that huge debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had on you?” And the king handed him over to be tortured until he paid back everything he owed. A chilling ending, right?

🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: Teacher, when you get to the part about the king forgiving the huge debt and then the servant refusing to forgive the small debt, hold out a heavy bag of coins (representing the huge debt) and an empty, very light wallet (representing the small debt). Say, ‘Imagine this heavy bag is the HUGE debt the king forgave! Feel how heavy it is?’ Pass it around. Then, quickly, ‘And this tiny, empty wallet is the small debt the servant refused to forgive. What a difference, huh? Does that make sense?’ This helps them physically grasp the vast difference in magnitude.

Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us

Wow, what a story! So, what does this mean for us, kids? It means that just like the king forgave that enormous, impossible debt, God has done something even bigger for us. We all, every single one of us, have sinned – we’ve messed up, we’ve broken God’s rules, we’ve accumulated a ‘debt’ of sin that we could never, ever pay back on our own. It’s a debt that separates us from God. But here’s the incredible part, the WHY we believe what we believe: God, in His amazing love and mercy, sent His Son, Jesus, to pay that debt for us! Jesus died on the cross, taking all our sins, all our ‘debt,’ upon Himself, and then rose again, conquering sin and death! He completely CANCELLED our debt! How do we know God is faithful? Because He kept His promise to send a Savior! Why can we trust His Word? Because Jesus’ resurrection proves He is who He says He is, and His forgiveness is real and complete! And because He forgave us so much, we are now called to show that same kind of amazing, big-hearted forgiveness to others, even when it’s hard. It’s not always easy, but we do it because He first forgave us everything!

Supplies Needed:

• Strips of paper (about 2 inches wide, 10-12 inches long)
• Crayons or markers
• 2 craft sticks or thin dowels per child
• Glue or tape
• String or yarn (optional)

Instructions:

1. Give each child a strip of paper and crayons/markers.
2. On their paper, have them draw or write about a time they needed forgiveness, or a time they want to forgive someone, or simply draw a picture of a forgiving heart.
3. Encourage them to remember our main idea: ‘We forgive much because Jesus forgave everything!’ Once they’ve finished, help them glue or tape one end of their paper strip to a craft stick and the other end to the second craft stick.
4. Then, they can roll up their paper like an ancient scroll, from both ends towards the middle.
5. They can tie it with a piece of string if they like.
6. This ‘scroll’ can serve as a personal reminder of the power of forgiveness and the freedom that comes when debts are ‘canceled’.
