Well, guess what? Our lives are a lot like those seeds. Every single choice we make, big or small, is like planting a seed. What kind of seed are you planting today? Because what you plant, friends, is what you get! Our main idea today is super important: Every choice I plant today grows into the life I live tomorrow. Can you believe it? Today, we’re diving into a powerful truth from God’s Word that helps us understand this even better.
Our journey today takes us back to a time when Jesus himself taught about seeds, choices, and the amazing power of God’s Word in our lives. He loved using parables, which are earthly stories with heavenly meanings, to help people understand deep spiritual truths. Let’s listen closely to one of His most famous ones!

Modern Parable: 🔬 The Science Fair Seed Project
The buzz in Mrs. Amanda’s fifth-grade class was electric! The annual Science Fair was just around the corner, and this year’s big project was all about seeds. Gideon, with his bright red sneakers and even brighter ideas, was convinced he had the winning concept: growing the fastest bean sprout ever! His best friend, Ellison, was a bit more chill, carefully planning his experiment on different soil types. Hazel, the meticulous one, was already sketching out her chart, while Kiya and Lawson were giggling over their wild idea of growing a plant with soda instead of water. Oh boy! Hazel’s meticulous chart showed robust growth. And Gideon? He almost gave in, but he remembered Mrs. Amanda’s firm voice about ‘the effort you put in now determines what you harvest later.’ He’d kept up his watering and sunlight routine, even when tempted to ditch it. Supplies Needed:
- Two small clear plastic cups or jars
- Potting soil
- Two identical bean seeds (or fast-growing seeds like radish)
- Water
- Small paper label (Good Choices)
- Small paper label (Poor Choices)
Step-by-Step Guide:
Hold up the two clear cups. ‘Look at these! What do you think is inside?’ (Allow responses). ‘Today, we’re going to plant some seeds – but not just any seeds. We’re planting the seeds of our choices!’ Fill both cups with soil. In one cup, label it ‘Good Choices.’ In the other, label it ‘Poor Choices.’ Plant a seed in each cup. ‘Now, which one should we water and put in the sunlight?’ (Kids will say ‘Good Choices’). ‘Exactly! We’ll water the ‘Good Choices’ cup and give it sunlight, maybe even talk nicely to it! For the ‘Poor Choices’ cup? We’ll put it in a dark corner and forget to water it, maybe even poke it with a stick!’ (Demonstrate, but do not actually harm the plant). ‘We *know* which one will grow into something healthy and strong, don’t we? Why? Because we chose to care for it, to nourish it, to give it what it needed. Our daily choices are just like these seeds. If we plant seeds of kindness, hard work, and obedience to God, what do you think will grow? (Allow responses). But if we plant seeds of laziness, meanness, or disobedience? Uh oh. What kind of ‘plant’ will we get then? Wait, think about that for a second… Every choice is a seed, and what you plant is definitely what you get!’

📖 Scripture Reading: 📖 Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23 (The Parable of the Sower)
“Don’t be fooled. You can’t turn your back on God and get away with it. You will gather what you plant.” (Galatians 6:7)
One day, Jesus was sitting by the Sea of Galilee, and a huge crowd gathered to hear Him speak. So many people, He had to get into a boat and teach from the water’s edge! He began to tell them a story, a parable, about a farmer who went out to sow his seeds. The farmer cast his seeds everywhere, scattering them with big, generous sweeps of his hand. It sounds a bit messy, right? But he was doing his job!
Some of those seeds fell along the path, and hungry birds quickly swooped down and ate them up. Poof! Gone. Other seeds landed on rocky ground, where there wasn’t much soil. They sprouted quickly because the soil was shallow, but when the hot sun came out, they withered and died because their roots couldn’t go deep. So sad! Then, some seeds fell among thorny weeds. The weeds grew up with the sprouts, choking them out, stopping them from getting sunlight and water. Oh no!
But thankfully, some seeds landed on good, rich soil! Aha! These seeds sank their roots deep, grew strong stems, and eventually produced a magnificent harvest – some yielding a hundred times what was sown, some sixty, and some thirty! What a difference good soil made! Jesus later explained that the seeds are God’s Word, and the different types of ground are like people’s hearts and how they respond to God’s message.
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: 👃 Pass around a small handful of potting soil or a simple, dry seed (like a sunflower seed). Ask kids to feel it, smell it (if safe), and notice how small it is. ‘Look at this tiny thing! Imagine the potential hidden inside!’

Woah, that parable really makes you think, doesn’t it? Jesus wasn’t just talking about gardening; He was talking about *our lives*! The seeds are like God’s Word – the amazing truth He shares with us in the Bible. And the soil? That’s our heart! Think about it: when God’s Word, like a seed, lands in a heart that’s hard like a path, or shallow like rocky ground, or full of ‘weeds’ like worries or bad influences, it can’t grow. But when it lands in a ‘good soil’ heart – a heart that is open, listens, and acts on God’s Word – incredible things happen! Why can we trust this? Because God is faithful! His Word is true, and He promises that when we listen and obey, He will help us grow. This isn’t just about trying hard; it’s about *believing* that God’s way is the best way, and that when we plant choices rooted in His love and wisdom, we’re building a life that will bless us and others, and most importantly, honor Him. He designed us to thrive when we follow His instructions, and He gives us the Holy Spirit to help us tend our ‘heart soil’ every single day.

MRS. AMANDA: Excellent observations, Hazel! Ellison, your dedication is admirable. Gideon, your ‘almost daily’ effort still yielded some results. But Lawson… Kiya… what went wrong here?
LAWSON: (Sighs) I guess… I thought I could just throw the seed in and magic would happen. It looked so easy!
KIYA: And I thought a little shortcut wouldn’t hurt. Whoops!
GIDEON: (To Lawson and Kiya) Wait, so you’re saying those little choices, like skipping watering or using soda, actually made *this*? (Gestures to their dying plants). Woah!
ELLISON: Exactly, Gideon! Remember our main idea: ‘Every choice I plant today grows into the life I live tomorrow.’ Those ‘bad choices’ you made with your plants were like planting ‘bad seeds.’ They didn’t grow into anything good.

LAWSON: So, if I want to have a good grade, I need to plant good ‘study seeds’?
KIYA: And if I want to be a kind friend, I need to plant ‘kindness seeds’?

🌱 Seed Sort Relay
Divide children into two teams. Place a bowl of mixed seeds (beans, corn, lentils, rice, etc.) at one end of the room and empty labeled cups (one for each seed type) at the other. Kids race one at a time, pick one seed, run to the other end, sort it into the correct cup, and run back. First team to sort all their seeds wins. *Connect to lesson: ‘This game shows us how important it is to *sort* our choices! Good choices go in one pile, bad ones in another!’*
🌳 What Grows There?
Prepare flashcards with different actions/choices written on them (e.g., ‘Helping a friend,’ ‘Telling a lie,’ ‘Practicing my memory verse,’ ‘Being mean to my brother’). Kids take turns drawing a card. They then decide if it’s a ‘good seed’ (good choice) or a ‘bad seed’ (bad choice) and describe what kind of ‘fruit’ or consequence might grow from that choice. *Connect to lesson: ‘Every action is a seed! What kind of fruit will it bear?’*
💃 Root & Shoot Freeze Dance
Play upbeat music. When the music plays, kids ‘grow’ and ‘dance’ like plants, reaching their ‘roots’ down and ‘shoots’ up. When the music stops, they ‘freeze’ in a plant pose (e.g., a tree, a flower). Anyone who moves while frozen is out. Last one growing wins. *Connect to lesson: ‘Just like plants need strong roots to grow, our good choices help us grow strong in God!’*
🎨 Themed Craft: 🎨 My Choice Garden Planter
Supplies Needed:
- Small paper cups (one per child)
- Potting soil
- Fast-growing seeds (e.g., bean, radish, marigold)
- Markers or crayons
- Construction paper strips
- Glue sticks
- Craft sticks or pipe cleaners
Instructions:
- Give each child a paper cup.
- Have them decorate the outside of the cup to look like a plant pot, drawing flowers, sun, or writing their name.
- Next, give them construction paper strips.
- On these strips, they will write or draw ‘good choices’ they want to ‘plant’ in their lives (e.g., ‘Be kind,’ ‘Listen to my parents,’ ‘Read my Bible,’ ‘Share’).
- They can then glue these strips around the top rim of their cup, like a little fence or border.
- Fill their cups with soil, plant a few seeds, and water them.
- Give them a craft stick or pipe cleaner to create a mini sign to put in their pot that says, ‘What I Plant is What I Get!’ or ‘My Choice Garden.’ Remind them to take their planter home, care for it, and remember that just like their seeds, their good choices will grow!
