🍎 Teacher’s Guide: This lesson focuses on the incredible truth that true freedom isn’t about doing whatever we want, but about Jesus breaking the chains of sin. Kids will discover how Jesus sets us free to live the way God designed us to live—as citizens of His kingdom, filled with purpose and joy. Through engaging stories, an object lesson, and interactive activities, children will grasp the profound difference between worldly ‘freedom’ and the lasting liberty found only in Christ.
Hey everyone! Have you ever had one of those days where you just wanted to do WHATEVER you wanted? No rules, no chores, just pure, unadulterated fun? Maybe stay up super late, eat ice cream for dinner, and play games all day? Woah, imagine that! That sounds like freedom, right? Doing anything and everything your heart desires!
But wait, think about that for a second… if you ate ice cream for dinner every night, how would you feel? Not so great, probably! And if you played games all day, would you ever learn new things, or make new friends outside? Hmm, maybe not. Sometimes what looks like ‘freedom’ can actually lead to bigger problems or trap us without us even realizing it! Today, we’re going to uncover a super important truth from the Bible about what *real* freedom looks like, and it’s even better than unlimited ice cream!
Our awesome memory verse today tells us exactly where this amazing freedom comes from. It’s found in the book of John, chapter 8, verse 36, and it says: ‘So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’ Can you believe it? Jesus, God’s Son, is the one who gives us true freedom! Let’s dive into what that means by looking at some of Jesus’s own words.
Drawing from the scripture passage of John 8:31-36 (Jesus Teaches About Freedom), this lesson provides a clear, biblically-grounded foundation of trust and understanding for children of all ages.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” – John 8:36
Modern Parable: The ‘Unlimited Access’ Pass
🎮 Ember, Bellamy, and Hazel were inseparable. They loved playing ‘Pixel Quest,’ a super popular online game where you built incredible worlds and went on epic adventures. One afternoon, while building a towering castle, a new update popped up. ‘Woah!’ exclaimed Ember, ‘It says ‘Unlimited Access Pass’ for only 10 gold coins!’ Hazel gasped, ‘But we only have 8! And it says you get special powers, too!’ Bellamy, always the cautious one, furrowed her brow. ‘Hold on, guys. My older cousin got one of those once, and he said it was a scam. It actually locked him out of his favorite areas after a few days! He said the *real* freedom in the game comes from earning your way up and enjoying the challenges!’
💻 Ember and Hazel exchanged glances. Ten gold coins was a lot, but unlimited access sounded amazing! They’d seen other players zipping around with cool new gear, and the pressure was on. ‘What if Bellamy’s cousin was just unlucky?’ Ember wondered aloud. ‘Think about how much more we could build, how many quests we could finish!’ Hazel started to agree, picturing her dream dragon stable. Bellamy, however, remembered her cousin’s frustrated face. He’d explained that the ‘pass’ tricked people into shortcuts that eventually limited their true abilities and even made them miss out on genuine achievements. ‘He told me the real fun was in playing fair and getting better, not finding loopholes that trap you later,’ she reiterated.
🛡️ Just as Ember was about to click the ‘buy’ button, a message popped up from one of their guild leaders, a super-skilled player they all admired. It was a warning about the ‘Unlimited Access Pass,’ explaining how it seemed great at first but eventually led to account penalties and restricted gameplay. ‘Many players fall for it,’ the message read, ‘thinking it’s an easy way to ‘freedom,’ but it actually puts them in a bind. True progress and freedom come from honest effort and following the game’s rules, which are there to make it fair and fun for everyone!’ Ember and Hazel looked at each other, then at Bellamy. She’d been right!
🏆 They decided to save their gold, keep playing fair, and enjoy the true, lasting fun of Pixel Quest. They realized that what looked like ‘freedom’ was actually a sneaky way to limit them, while the ‘rules’ were actually designed to give them the most fulfilling and genuinely free gaming experience. Just like in life, sometimes the easy way out or bending the rules might seem appealing, but real freedom, the kind that lasts and truly helps you thrive, comes from choosing the right path and following the good instructions from someone who truly knows what’s best.
Interactive Sunday School Object Lesson: 🔗 The Unraveling Rope
Children learn best when they can see, hear, and feel a concept. This “The Great Escape: Set Free to Stay Free!” children’s sermon features a powerful, memorable object lesson using simple household items to demonstrate the core spiritual truth: Sin can feel like a tangled mess that traps us, but Jesus unravels those chains and sets us truly free!.
🥚 Object Lesson Outline
Core Point: Sin can feel like a tangled mess that traps us, but Jesus unravels those chains and sets us truly free!
Supplies Needed:
- A length of rope (about 3-4 feet long)
- Scissors
Step-by-Step Guide:
Hold up the rope. ‘Imagine this rope is like our lives. Sometimes, we make choices that aren’t God’s best. These choices, which the Bible calls sin, can start to tangle us up.’ As you say this, tie several messy, tight knots in the rope, making it difficult to untangle. ‘See how messy and knotted it becomes? It’s hard to move, hard to feel truly free. Sin can make us feel trapped, guilty, and unable to do what’s right.’ Try to untie one of the knots, showing how difficult it is. ‘But then, Jesus comes along! He’s like the ultimate knot-untying expert. He didn’t just try to untie a few knots; He broke the whole chain of sin!’ With a dramatic flourish, cut the rope in half, cleanly through a knotted section. ‘Woah! He doesn’t just untie a little bit; He cuts us completely free from the power of sin! So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!’ Hold up the now two separate pieces of rope, demonstrating how the bondage is broken. This shows that Jesus offers a complete, permanent freedom that we could never achieve on our own.

Let’s dive into what that means by looking at some of Jesus’s own words.
📖 Scripture Reading: John 8:31-36 (Jesus Teaches About Freedom)
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)
📖 One day, Jesus was teaching a crowd of people, and many of them believed in Him. He told them, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free!’ Sounds amazing, right? But some of the people were confused. They thought, ‘Wait, we’ve never been slaves to anyone! What are you talking about, ‘set free’?’ They thought freedom was just about not being in chains.
🤔 Jesus knew exactly what they meant, but He was talking about something deeper. He explained, ‘Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.’ Woah, that’s a powerful statement! He wasn’t talking about physical chains, but spiritual chains. Every time we choose to disobey God, to be selfish, or unkind, it’s like we’re letting sin put a little chain on our hearts. It traps us and pulls us away from God’s best plan for us.
💖 But here’s the best part! Jesus continued, ‘Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’ Aha! Jesus, God’s Son, came to break those chains of sin completely! He gives us a brand-new freedom, not just from the *punishment* of sin, but from its *power* over our lives. He invites us into God’s family, where we are truly free to live with purpose and joy!
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: During the story, as you describe sin as ‘chains,’ have the children lightly link their hands together like a chain to feel what being ‘bound’ might feel like. Then, when Jesus breaks the chains, encourage them to release their hands and wave them freely!
Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us
So, what does this ‘Great Escape’ mean for us today? It means that true freedom isn’t doing whatever we want, but doing what God wants, because He knows what’s truly best for us! When Jesus sets us free from sin, He doesn’t just take away the bad stuff; He gives us a new way to live. We can trust Him because He proved His power over sin and death by rising from the grave! We know God designed us for this because His Word, the Bible, shows us His perfect plan for us to live in relationship with Him, filled with His love. It’s like being set free from a messy, tangled spiderweb and given a clear, wide path to run on! We are free to love God, love others, and become the amazing people He created us to be, living as citizens of His incredible kingdom!

Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: The ‘Free Pass’ Fiasco
Reinforce the message with a live drama skit! Our curriculum pack includes an easy-to-stage script designed for the characters: EMBER (Energetic, loves trying new things), BELLAMY (Thoughtful, often the voice of reason), HAZEL (Eager to please, easily influenced), COACH KENJI (A wise and encouraging youth group leader), SLICK SAM (A mischievous character who tempts others with shortcuts). It brings the theme of “Breaking Chains: Living Free in God’s Kingdom” to life through humor, relatable dialogue, and engaging storytelling.
🎭 Skit Blueprint & Script Excerpt
Characters:
- EMBER (Energetic, loves trying new things)
- BELLAMY (Thoughtful, often the voice of reason)
- HAZEL (Eager to please, easily influenced)
- COACH KENJI (A wise and encouraging youth group leader)
- SLICK SAM (A mischievous character who tempts others with shortcuts)
[Setting: A brightly colored community center, with a ‘Game Challenge’ poster in the background.]
EMBER: (Bouncing on the balls of her feet) Okay, everyone! The ‘Mega-Mind Maze Challenge’ is in five minutes! My brain is ready!
HAZEL: (Nervously) Mine too, I guess. But those mazes are SO hard! Last year, I got stuck in the ‘Enchanted Forest’ section for like, ten minutes!
BELLAMY: (Smiling) That’s okay, Hazel! The challenge is to figure it out, right? Coach Kenji said the real victory is in the effort, not just winning.
EMBER: Totally! And he also said, ‘You’re free to try, free to fail, and free to learn!’
SLICK SAM: (Sneaking up, holding a folded piece of paper) Psst! Hey, ladies. Looking for a real ‘free pass’ to victory?
HAZEL: (Eyes wide) A free pass? For the maze? How?
SLICK SAM: (Waving the paper mysteriously) This, my friends, is the ‘Ultimate Maze Map’! It shows all the secret shortcuts, all the hidden exits. You’ll be done before anyone else even finds the start button! Instant freedom from frustration!
EMBER: (Hesitantly) Ooh, that sounds tempting… No more getting stuck!
BELLAMY: (Frowning) Wait a minute, Sam. Isn’t that, like, cheating? Coach Kenji always says true freedom isn’t about cutting corners. It’s about being able to do your best because you’ve learned and grown.
SLICK SAM: (Waving his hand dismissively) Nah, ‘cheating’ is such an old-fashioned word. This is ‘strategic optimization’! Why struggle when you can just be free from the struggle? Plus, everyone else is probably doing it!
HAZEL: (Looking at Ember) He has a point, Ember. My head hurts just thinking about those dead ends. This map sounds like real freedom!
EMBER: (Torn) I don’t know… It *does* sound easy. But Bellamy, your cousin told you about that game pass that ended up trapping him, right? It seemed free, but it made things worse.
BELLAMY: Exactly! He thought he was getting ‘unlimited access,’ but he actually got locked out of the best parts. He learned that true fun came from earning it and playing fair. The rules were there to make the game genuinely enjoyable, not to trap him.
COACH KENJI: (Walking over, smiling) Alright team, ready for the challenge?
SLICK SAM: (Quickly hides the map behind his back) Oh, hey Coach! Just… strategizing!
COACH KENJI: (Chuckles, eyes Sam knowingly) Indeed. Remember our chat, team? True freedom isn’t about taking shortcuts or avoiding the struggle. It’s about being empowered to tackle challenges, learn from mistakes, and grow stronger. Like John 8:36 says, ‘If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.’ That freedom isn’t just from bad things, but it’s the freedom *to do good* and *to be your best self*!
HAZEL: (Thoughtfully) So, true freedom means I get to try my hardest, even if it’s tricky, and know I’m doing the right thing?
COACH KENJI: Precisely! And when you overcome those challenges honestly, that’s when you feel truly victorious. No fake passes needed.
EMBER: (Smiling at Bellamy) You were right! The map sounded like freedom, but it was just a sneaky way to make us feel guilty and miss out on the real fun.
SLICK SAM: (Sighs, crumpling the map) Alright, alright. Maybe ‘strategic optimization’ isn’t always the best path. Guess I’ll actually *try* the maze this year.
BELLAMY: (Pats Sam on the shoulder) Good choice, Sam! Come on, guys, let’s go get truly ‘free’ in that maze! Win or lose, we’ll do it the right way!
HAZEL: Yeah! And maybe next time, Sam, you can join us in choosing true freedom!
SLICK SAM: (Grinning) Maybe I will. This ‘free indeed’ thing sounds pretty good.
[The three girls, with Coach Kenji, head off towards the maze entrance, ready to face the challenge honestly, feeling truly free.]

Themed Sunday School Games & Craft Template
Keep the momentum going with active learning games and a themed craft that kids can take home to show their families!
🎯 Active Games
🏃 Free Your Friends Relay
Divide the class into two teams. Each team lines up. The first person on each team has a ‘chain’ (a long piece of yarn or ribbon tied loosely around their wrists). They must hop to a designated ‘rescue’ spot, where another teammate is waiting. The ‘rescuer’ quickly unties the ‘chain’ from the first person’s wrists. The newly ‘freed’ person then runs back to tag the next person in line, who then gets ‘chained’ up and repeats the process. The first team to ‘free’ all their members wins. Emphasize that Jesus helps us get free!
🔗 Untangle the Human Knot
Have children stand in a circle, facing inwards. Each child extends their right hand and grabs the hand of someone across the circle (not directly next to them). Then, they extend their left hand and grab the hand of a *different* person across the circle. The goal is for the group to ‘untangle’ themselves into a single circle without letting go of anyone’s hands. This demonstrates working together to break free from a tangled situation, just as Jesus helps us out of the tangle of sin.
🔓 The Key to Freedom Search
Before class, hide several paper ‘keys’ (cut out shapes or small laminated pictures of keys) around the room. On each key, write one word from the memory verse: ‘So’, ‘if’, ‘the’, ‘Son’, ‘sets’, ‘you’, ‘free’, ‘you’, ‘will’, ‘be’, ‘free’, ‘indeed’. Divide the children into small groups. Give each group a copy of the memory verse with blanks. They must search for the keys, and when they find one, bring it back and correctly place its word in the blank space on their verse sheet. The first team to correctly complete the verse and say it together wins. Reinforce that Jesus is the ‘key’ to true freedom.
🎨 Themed Craft: ⛓️ Break the Chains Bracelet
Supplies Needed:
- Construction paper (various colors)
- Scissors
- Glue sticks or tape
- Markers or crayons
Instructions:
Give each child several strips of construction paper (about 1 inch wide and 6-8 inches long). Have them write words like ‘sin’, ‘anger’, ‘selfishness’, ‘disobedience’, ‘lies’ on some of the strips. Then, have them loop and glue/tape these strips together to form a paper chain, representing the chains of sin. Next, give them a contrasting color strip of paper. On this strip, have them write ‘Jesus Sets Me Free!’ or ‘Free Indeed!’. Instruct them to cut one of the ‘sin’ chains and use the ‘Jesus’ strip to reconnect the two ends, showing that Jesus breaks the power of sin and creates a new, free connection. They can then wear their ‘broken chain’ bracelet as a reminder of their freedom in Christ. Encourage them to decorate the ‘Jesus’ strip brightly.
