The Bible Story: Daniel’s Unshakeable Faith

Before we dive into the activities, let’s look at the heart of this Daniel in the Lions’ Den lesson.

The story, found in Daniel chapter 6, isn’t just about lions; it’s about jealousy and integrity. Daniel was so excellent at his job that the other leaders were jealous. They tricked King Darius into making a law that trapped Daniel: no praying to anyone but the King for 30 days.

But Daniel didn’t hide. He went to his room, opened the windows, and prayed just like he always did. He chose to be faithful even when it was scary. God didn’t stop the law from being signed, but He sent an angel to shut the lions’ mouths.

The Big Idea: God is always with us, especially when we’re scared, and He honors our trust in Him.

A Modern Parable: Alex and the “No-Help” Code

Sometimes it is hard for kids to relate to ancient kings and pits. To make this Daniel in the Lions’ Den lesson stick, use this modern story about a boy named Alex.

Alex was a great coder who loved helping others. But a jealous kid named Mason reminded everyone of a strict competition rule: “No helping other teams”. When Alex saw his friend Ben crying over broken code, he had a choice.

Just like Daniel, Alex ignored the “trap.” He walked over and helped Ben, even though Mason was watching. It felt like walking into a lion’s den, but he stayed faithful to who he was—a helper.

Object Lesson: “Shut the Mouth!”

Kids learn best when they can see and touch the lesson. This activity illustrates how God protects us.

Supplies You Need:

  • Paper lunch bags (1 per child)
  • Markers (brown, black, red)
  • Glue sticks and scissors
  • White construction paper

Instructions:

  1. Create the Lion: Have the kids turn the bag into a puppet. The bottom flap is the head, and the part under the flap is the mouth.
  2. Add Details: Draw eyes on top and a big red tongue underneath the flap .
  3. The Teeth: Cut out small white triangles and glue them on as teeth.
  4. The Roar: Have the kids make their lions roar loudly!.
  5. The Lesson: Shout, “But what did God do? He SHUT THE LIONS’ MOUTHS!” On that cue, have all the kids slam their puppets shut.

Explain that when we trust God, He protects our hearts and gives us peace, effectively “shutting the mouth” of our fears.

Active Game: Lions’ Den Freeze Dance

Get the wiggles out with this high-energy game, perfect for a Daniel in the Lions’ Den lesson.

  1. Play high-energy worship music and let the kids dance.
  2. Yell “LIONS’ DEN!”.
  3. The music stops, and everyone must freeze in a “praying” pose.
  4. If anyone moves, they are out. The last one standing wins!.

Craft: The Pop-Up Den

This craft is a great take-home reminder that God is with them in their own “dens.”

What You Need:

  • Blue construction paper
  • Small paper/plastic cup
  • Popsicle stick
  • Crayons and tape

How to Make It:

  1. Draw a dark circle or cave shape on the blue paper.
  2. Draw a sleepy, peaceful lion face on the bottom of the cup.
  3. Glue the open end of the cup onto the “cave” on the paper.
  4. Color the Popsicle stick to look like Daniel.
  5. The Surprise: Kids can slide the “Daniel” stick inside the cup. He is in the den, but he is safe with the peaceful lion! .

Family Connection: The “Worry Den”

We know parents are busy, so we want to give you a tool to send home. Challenge families to create a “Worry Den” using an empty shoebox.

Throughout the week, whenever a child feels scared or worried, they can write it on a scrap of paper and put it in the box. At the end of the week, the family opens the box and prays over the worries, remembering that God is bigger than any “lion” .
