Ever feel like teaching kids to pray is… complicated?
You want them to know it’s a real conversation , not just a list of “magic words” or a boring performance. But where do you even start? When you say, “Let’s pray,” do you get blank stares? Or maybe you’re just not sure what words to use yourself.
If you’ve ever felt stuck, you’re not alone. Even Jesus’s disciples felt that way!. They saw Jesus pray and knew he had a special connection; they didn’t. So they asked him, “Teach us how to pray”.
His answer wasn’t a list of complicated rules. He gave them a simple, powerful roadmap. A “GPS” for talking to God.
That’s why we’re so excited to share this complete, free Lord’s Prayer lesson for kids, titled “God’s GPS: How to Talk to Him”. It’s a full, all-in-one resource designed for busy parents, pastors, and teachers to make prayer simple, memorable, and fun.
🎯 The Main Idea: Prayer is a Conversation, Not a Performance
The main theme of this lesson is simple: Prayer isn’t a performance; it’s a real conversation with our loving Father. Jesus gave us a perfect roadmap—the Lord’s Prayer—so we never have to feel stuck or lost for words.
- Bible Verse: Matthew 6:9-10
- Quote: “This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.'”
🥪 The “Prayer Sandwich” Object Lesson (5-Minute Opener)
This is the perfect way to introduce the lesson. It’s visual, fun, and easy for kids to remember.
Supplies:
- Two slices of bread (or paper cutouts)
- A slice of cheese (or yellow paper)
- A slice of turkey (or pink/brown paper)
- A lettuce leaf (or green paper)
Instructions:
- Top Bread (Praise): Hold up the first slice. “This is our Praise. We start by telling God how awesome He is. ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name…'”.
- Cheese (Plan): Hold up the cheese. “This is God’s Plan. We ask for His plan to happen, not just our own. ‘Your kingdom come, your will be done…'”.
- Turkey (Provision): Hold up the turkey. “This is our Provision. We ask for what we need. ‘Give us today our daily bread.’ This is our food, our health, our help on a test”.
- Lettuce (Pardon): Hold up the lettuce. “This is our Pardon. We say sorry, ask for forgiveness, and promise to forgive others. ‘Forgive us… as we forgive others'”.
- Bottom Bread (Protection): Hold up the last slice. “This is our Protection. We ask for help and guidance. ‘And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one'”.
The Point: The Lord’s Prayer isn’t a random list; it’s the perfect recipe for talking to God. It covers everything we need!.

📖 Full Children’s Sermon: “The Prayer That Changes Everything”
Here is a simple, ready-to-read sermon that expands on the object lesson.
Have you ever felt like God is a million miles away? Like, he’s a big, serious King on a throne? It can make you feel small.
The disciples felt the same way. They saw Jesus pray and knew he had a connection to God, but they didn’t. So they asked him, “Teach us how to pray”.
They probably expected a long list of fancy rules. But Jesus didn’t do that. He gave them something better: a simple, powerful prayer.
And it begins with two amazing words: “Our Father.”
Whoa. Stop right there. He didn’t say, “Our Almighty, Unknowable King”. He said, “Dad”. He was telling us that prayer starts by remembering we’re family. You don’t have to be formal and weird; you can just be real.
Then he gives them the model, our “Prayer Sandwich”:
- Praise (You’re awesome, Dad!)
- Plan (I want what You want.)
- Provision (Help me with what I need today.)
- Pardon (I’m sorry… and I’ll forgive them, too.)
- Protection (Keep me safe!)
This prayer is simple enough for a five-year-old but so deep you can spend your whole life understanding it.
The Real Lesson The Lord’s Prayer isn’t a magic formula. It’s a map, a GPS. It teaches us two main things:
- Who God is: Our awesome, holy, loving Father.
- Who we are: His kids who need help, food, and forgiveness every day.
Prayer stops being a performance to get something and starts being a conversation to know someone.
🎨 Craft Activity: “My Prayer GPS Wheel”
This craft is the perfect take-home tool to help kids use the prayer model all week long.
Supplies:
- 2 paper plates per child
- 1 brass fastener (brad) per child
- Markers or crayons
Instructions:
- Bottom Plate: Take one plate. Write “Our Father” in the center.
- Divide the outside edge into 5 “pizza slices”.
- In the 5 sections, write the parts of the prayer map:
- Section 1: “You are Awesome!” (Praise)
- Section 2: “Your Plan is Best!” (Kingdom)
- Section 3: “Please Help Me With…” (Provision)
- Section 4: “I’m Sorry / I Forgive” (Pardon)
- Section 5: “Keep Me Safe!” (Protection)
- Top Plate: Take the second plate. Decorate it and write “My Prayer GPS” on it.
- Carefully cut one “pizza slice” wedge out of this top plate to be the “window”.
- Use the brass fastener to attach the top plate to the bottom plate in the center.
How to Use It: Kids can put this by their bed. When they don’t know what to pray, they can spin their “GPS”. The window will land on one part of the prayer and guide them through a real conversation with their Father.

🏃♀️ Games to Make the Lesson Stick
Use these games to get kids moving and reinforce the lesson’s main points.
- Prayer Pictionary
- How: Divide into two teams. One kid draws a concept from the Lord’s Prayer (like “daily bread” or a “crown” for kingdom) on a whiteboard. They can’t use words or letters. First team to guess wins!.
- “Father, May I?”
- How: This is just like “Mother, May I?”. One person is the “Father” at the front. Players at the back ask, “Father, may I take three big steps?”. The “Father” says “Yes, you may” or “No, but you may…”. If a player moves without asking “Father, may I?”, they go back to the start.
- The Point: It’s a fun way to practice listening for the Father’s voice before we act.
- Daily Bread Scavenger Hunt
- How: Give teams a bag and a list of items representing our “daily bread”. This isn’t just food!.
- Sample List: Find something for food (a wrapper), something for shelter (a toy block), something for learning (a pencil), and something for health (a band-aid). First team to find them all wins.
🏠 The At-Home Connection (For Parents)
Keep the conversation going all week long with these simple dinner table discussion questions.
- Jesus started by calling God “Father.” What’s one word you would use to describe a perfect, loving parent? (That’s what God is like!)
- What’s the difference between praying for “daily bread” (what we need) and praying for a new video game (what we want)? Is it okay to pray for both?
- The prayer says we have to forgive other people. Why do you think Jesus put that part in there? Is there anyone you’re having a hard time forgiving?
- When is the hardest time of day for you to remember to pray? How could we help each other remember?
