πŸ“¦ Materials Needed

  • Basket or bag
  • Several different types of apples (e.g., Gala, Granny Smith, Fuji, Red Delicious)
  • A knife (for teacher use only)
  • Small paper plates or napkins for tasting (optional)

Step-by-Step Object Lesson: 🍏 The Amazing Apple Assortment

Children remember truth best when they see it demonstrated hands-on. This visual illustration uses simple everyday items to show kids that Just like different apples are chosen for different purposes, Jesus has chosen each of us for a unique and special purpose..

πŸ”¬ Demonstration Instructions

1. Hold up a basket filled with various apples. ‘Look at all these amazing apples! They are all apples, but look how different they are!’ 2. Pull out a Granny Smith. ‘This one is tart and firm. It’s often chosen for baking pies because it holds its shape and adds a great tang!’ 3. Pull out a Red Delicious. ‘This one is sweet and crunchy, perfect for eating right off the tree!’ 4. Pull out a Fuji or Gala. ‘These are also sweet, maybe a bit softer, great for applesauce or snacks.’ 5. Explain: ‘Imagine a chef who needs to make an apple pie. Do they just grab *any* apple? No! They *choose* the specific apple that is best for that pie. If they want sweet, fresh eating, they choose a different one.’ 6. Connect: ‘In the same way, Jesus has chosen *you*. Not because you’re exactly like someone else, but because you are *you*! He has a special purpose for your unique talents, personality, and gifts. He picked you, packed you with potential, and has a purpose for you to bear wonderful fruit for His kingdom!’

Wow! That apple orchard story was awesome, wasn’t it?

Did you ever feel like Hensley, wondering if your contribution was ‘good enough’ compared to others? It’s a super common feeling!

Today, we’re going to dive into a powerful truth from the Bible that will blow that feeling right out of the water! We’re talking about being chosen, being equipped, and having an incredible purpose, all thanks to Jesus.

Get ready to hear directly from Jesus Himself, as we open up God’s Word in the book of John, chapter 15. This is where Jesus tells us something truly amazing about our lives and His plan for us.

πŸ“– Bible Story: John 15:1-17

Jesus often taught using things people saw every day, and one time He talked about a vineyard. He said, ‘I am the true vine, and My Father is the gardener.’ Imagine a big, strong grapevine with branches stretching out.

Jesus is that main vine, the source of life!

Then Jesus said, ‘Every branch in me that does not bear fruit He takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.’ This means God, like a careful gardener, helps us grow by sometimes trimming away things that aren’t helping us. It’s all so we can produce *even more* good things for Him!

Jesus emphasized, ‘Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.’ He then explained that if we stay connected to Him, we will bear much fruit.

But here’s the most exciting part for us today: He declared, ‘You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruitβ€”fruit that will last!’

🍏 *Teacher: As you tell this part, invite kids to gently touch a real branch or a stick if you have one. Talk about how it needs to stay connected to the main plant to live and grow, just like we need to stay connected to Jesus.*

πŸ–οΈ Sensory Engagement Element: 🍎 *Teacher: After telling the story, offer small apple slices for the children to taste (if no allergies). Emphasize that each apple, though different, brings unique sweetness and purpose, just like each of us.*

🌱 Modern Parable: The Orchard’s Chosen Ones

The school bus rumbled along, packed with excited kids heading to Miller’s Apple Orchard. Ember, Hazel, and Hensley chattered happily in their seats, while Lincoln, Ethan, and Anthony debated who could pick the most apples.

This was the big 5th-grade field trip, and everyone was ready to fill their baskets!

When they arrived, Farmer Miller explained, ‘Each of you has a specific section to pick from. Don’t worry about comparing your apples to others; just find the best ones in your row!’ Hensley, though, started glancing at Lincoln’s overflowing basket of big, shiny Red Delicious apples.

Her own basket held smaller, slightly less perfect Honeycrisps. A little voice in her head whispered, ‘Your apples aren’t as good.’

Suddenly, Farmer Miller called out, ‘Who’s picking the Honeycrisps? We need those for our special cider recipe!’ Ember, who had been quietly but diligently filling her basket with the smaller, sweeter apples, beamed.

Farmer Miller praised her and Hazel, who also had a basket full, explaining that those particular apples were *chosen* specifically for their unique flavor in the cider, and were essential.

Hensley realized then that every apple, just like every person, has a special purpose. She learned that day that being picked for a specific job is an honor, and comparing herself to others only made her miss the amazing plan that was already set out for her.

It wasn’t about being the biggest or shiniest, but about being exactly what was needed.

πŸ’‘ Lessons for Us & Core Truths

This incredible story from Jesus teaches us something super important about *why* we believe what we believe: God doesn’t just want us to exist; He has a powerful, personal plan for our lives. We didn’t earn His choice; He simply picked us!

This isn’t just a nice thought; it’s a foundational truth. We can trust God’s Word because He always keeps His promises, and His promise here is that He has *chosen* us on purpose.

He has uniquely equipped each of us with special gifts, talents, and a personality to ‘bear fruit’ – meaning to do good things, show His love, share His truth, and live in a way that honors Him. Remembering His works, like choosing us and sending Jesus, helps us understand His faithfulness and our purpose in His grand story.

🎭 Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: The ‘Talent Tree’ Tryouts

Bring the lesson to life with an easy-to-stage drama skit! Designed for characters DIRECTOR DEREK (Energetic play director), MAYA (Enthusiastic but unsure), SAM (Confident, good at singing), CHLOE (Quiet, loves to draw), LEO (Witty, good at telling jokes), it reinforces the story through engaging dialogue.

Characters:

  • DIRECTOR DEREK (Energetic play director)
  • MAYA (Enthusiastic but unsure)
  • SAM (Confident, good at singing)
  • CHLOE (Quiet, loves to draw)
  • LEO (Witty, good at telling jokes)

[Setting: A school stage, decorated with a fake tree labeled ‘Talent Tree’. DIRECTOR DEREK stands center stage, looking through papers. MAYA, SAM, CHLOE, and LEO are gathered nervously.]

DIRECTOR DEREK: Alright, alright, settle down, my budding stars! Welcome to the ‘Talent Tree’ tryouts for our school’s Spring Showcase! We need all sorts of ‘fruit’ for this show – singers, dancers, storytellers, artists… everything!

MAYA: (Whispering to Chloe) Oh no, I don’t know what my talent is! Everyone else is so good at things.

SAM: (Proudly) I’m going to sing a song! Mr. Derek says I have a voice like a bird!

CHLOE: (Quietly) I brought my sketchbook. I draw really good trees. Maybe I can draw the scenery?

LEO: And I’ve got some knock-knock jokes that will make everyone laugh until juice comes out their noses!

DIRECTOR DEREK: Excellent, excellent! Sam, let’s hear that bird-like voice! (Sam sings a short, cheerful tune.) Bravo, Sam! A perfect juicy apple for our tree!

SAM: (Beaming) Thanks, Mr. Derek!

DIRECTOR DEREK: Chloe, what do you have for us? Don’t be shy!

CHLOE: (Holds up her sketchbook, showing a detailed drawing of a tree) I… I can draw things. Really realistic things.

DIRECTOR DEREK: (Gasps) Chloe, these are magnificent! These aren’t just drawings; these are *visions*! We desperately need someone to design our backdrops! You are a beautiful, strong branch for our Talent Tree!

CHLOE: (Smiling shyly) Really?

DIRECTOR DEREK: Absolutely! Leo, let’s have some of that humor!

LEO: (Clears throat) What do you call a sad strawberry? A blueberry! (Pause for laughter) See? Comedy gold!

DIRECTOR DEREK: (Chuckles) Oh, Leo, your humor is like a burst of sunshine! We definitely need someone to keep spirits high backstage and maybe even introduce acts! You’re a delightful, zesty lemon!

LEO: Lemon? I like it!

DIRECTOR DEREK: Maya, you’ve been quiet. What unique ‘fruit’ do you bring to our Talent Tree?

MAYA: (Looks down) I… I don’t sing like Sam. I don’t draw like Chloe. And I’m not funny like Leo. I just… I don’t know what I’m chosen for.

DIRECTOR DEREK: Ah, Maya! The most important part! You see, a Talent Tree isn’t just about the biggest, brightest fruit. It’s about all the different parts working together. Some fruit grows high, some grows low, some is sweet, some is tart, but every single one is *chosen* for a reason!

MAYA: But what’s my reason?

DIRECTOR DEREK: I’ve been watching you. You’re excellent at organizing, remembering details, and encouraging others. We need someone to be our stage manager! To make sure everyone is where they need to be, that the props are ready, and that our performers feel supported and loved! Without that, even the best singers and artists would be lost!

MAYA: (Eyes widen) You mean… I’m chosen for that? To help everyone else shine?

DIRECTOR DEREK: Exactly! You are the sturdy, reliable branch that helps all the other fruits stay strong! Just like Jesus said, ‘You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruitβ€”fruit that will last!’ You were picked, packed with skill, and have a purpose, Maya! A vital one!

MAYA: (Grinning) I’m the stage manager! I can do that!

SAM: Hey, Maya, can you help me remember my cue for the second verse?

CHLOE: And where should I put the green backdrop?

LEO: Can you remind me not to tell the ‘orange’ joke backstage? It’s not ready for prime time yet!

MAYA: (Laughing, already taking charge) Absolutely! Mr. Derek, where’s the clipboard?

DIRECTOR DEREK: (Beaming) That’s my team! Remember, kids, everyone is chosen, everyone has a purpose, and when we work together, we create something truly amazing for God’s glory! Now, let’s go make some lasting fruit!

🍎 Fruit Basket Upset!

Place chairs in a circle, one less than the number of players. Assign each child a ‘fruit’ name (e.g., Apple, Orange, Grape, Banana). The leader stands in the middle and calls out one or more fruit names. Those children must get up and find a new seat. If ‘Fruit Basket Upset!’ is called, everyone must find a new seat. The child left without a seat is the new caller. Connect this to how God ‘calls’ or ‘chooses’ us for different roles.

🍏 Purposeful Pictionary

Divide children into two teams. One child from each team draws a picture representing something good they can ‘do’ or ‘be’ as a Christian (e.g., ‘sharing,’ ‘helping,’ ‘praying,’ ‘kindness,’ ‘forgiveness’). Their team tries to guess what they’re drawing. This helps illustrate what ‘bearing fruit’ looks like in action. Use a whiteboard or large paper.

πŸ‡ Chosen for the Climb

Set up a simple obstacle course using cushions, chairs, and blankets. Label different ‘stations’ with types of ‘fruit’ (e.g., ‘Kindness Corner,’ ‘Helping Hands Hill,’ ‘Prayer Peak’). Explain that just as they walk through the course using different skills, God has chosen them and given them unique abilities to ‘bear fruit’ at different points in life. Encourage them to help each other through the course.

🎨 Themed Craft: 🍎 My Purposeful Fruit Print

Supplies Needed:

  • Apples (cut in half, lengthwise, to expose the star shape if cut correctly)
  • Red, green, yellow, and brown tempera or acrylic paint
  • White construction paper or cardstock
  • Paper plates (for paint)
  • Paintbrushes or cotton swabs
  • Markers or crayons

Instructions:

  1. Have children choose an apple half. They can paint the cut side of the apple with various colors, creating a vibrant print. Encourage them to experiment with different colors for each print.
  2. Press the painted apple onto the paper to make ‘fruit’ prints. Repeat several times, overlapping or creating a ‘vine’ pattern with the prints.
  3. Once the paint dries, use markers or crayons to draw a simple vine and leaves connecting the apple prints.
  4. Around their apple prints, have them write or dictate things they want to ‘bear fruit’ in their lives (e.g., ‘I will show kindness,’ ‘I will share,’ ‘I will help my family,’ ‘I will tell others about Jesus’). Write the memory verse, John 15:16a, at the bottom of their paper. This craft visually reminds them that they are chosen to bear good fruit.
