The Bible story for today is actually from **Matthew 14:22-33**! After Jesus fed five thousand people with just a few fish and loaves, He told His disciples to get into a boat and go ahead of Him to the other side of the lake. Jesus then went up on a mountain to pray by Himself. Can you imagine? Five thousand people fed! And now the disciples are in a boat, probably still buzzing from the miracle!
Night came, and the boat was far from land, being tossed about by huge waves because a strong wind was blowing. The disciples were really struggling, rowing against the storm. Then, sometime between three and six in the morning, they saw something unbelievable! A figure was walking toward them on the water! ‘It’s a ghost!’ they cried out, terrified! But Jesus immediately called out to them, ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’
Then Peter, bold Peter, called back, ‘Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.’ And Jesus said, ‘Come!’ So Peter climbed out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus! Can you believe it?! He was doing it! But then, he looked at the wild, strong wind and the huge waves, and he got terrified. He took his eyes off Jesus, started to sink, and cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’ Immediately, Jesus reached out His hand, caught him, and said, ‘You of little faith, why did you doubt?’ When they climbed back into the boat, the wind died down, and the disciples worshipped Him, saying, ‘Truly you are the Son of God!’

When we face scary things, like a new school, a challenge, or even just feeling overwhelmed, our fears can feel like those big, wild waves. We start to sink if we take our eyes off Jesus and focus only on the problem. But when we fix our eyes on Jesus, who is the pioneer and perfecter of our faith, as Hebrews 12:2 says, He holds us up! He is stronger than any storm, and He gives us peace. We know God is faithful because He always keeps His promises, and His Word, the Bible, is true. 👁️ Eye on the Prize Balance
Set up a start and finish line. Give each child a beanbag to balance on their head. Their goal is to walk from start to finish without dropping the beanbag, keeping their eyes focused on a designated ‘prize’ (a picture of Jesus, a special toy) at the finish line. If they drop it, they pick it up and restart from where it fell. The challenge is to keep their gaze steady. Emphasize how looking away can make them lose balance, just like losing focus on Jesus.
🤝 Team ‘Steady Ship’ Walk
Divide children into teams of 3-4. Each team gets a long rope or a sheet. They must hold onto the rope/sheet and walk across the room, pretending they are a ship navigating choppy waters. Their goal is to move together, keeping the ‘ship’ (rope/sheet) from touching the ground. Designate one child in each team as the ‘Captain’ who must keep their eyes on a ‘lighthouse’ (a specific point in the room) and call out directions to keep the ‘ship’ steady and everyone moving in sync. Rotate captains. This promotes teamwork and unified focus.
🎯 Fear Target Toss
Draw or print out pictures of things that might represent fears (e.g., a big test, a new school, trying something new) and tape them to the floor or a wall. Give each child soft beanbags or crumpled paper balls. The goal is to ‘toss away’ their fears by aiming for the targets. After each successful toss, lead a short cheer, ‘Jesus helps me!’ or ‘No more fear!’ This is a fun, active way to symbolically address and overcome common childhood fears by ‘throwing them’ to Jesus.
🎨 Themed Craft: 🔭 My Jesus Focus-Finder
Supplies Needed:
- Empty toilet paper rolls (one per child)
- Construction paper (various colors)
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Glue sticks or tape
- Yarn or string
- Hole punch
Instructions:
- Give each child an empty toilet paper roll.
- This will be their ‘focus-finder.’ Have them decorate the outside of the roll with construction paper, markers, or crayons, making it colorful and personal.
- They can write ‘My Eyes on Jesus!’ on it.
- Next, provide small strips of paper where they can draw or write things that might make them scared or worried (e.g., ‘new school,’ ‘darkness,’ ‘big dog’).
- Have them glue these strips *around* the outside of the tube, so they are visible but not blocking the view *through* the tube.
- Then, for the inside, have them draw or write words related to Jesus, His power, and His peace (e.g., ‘Jesus saves,’ ‘God is faithful,’ ‘peace’).
- Glue this inside so it’s what they see when they look *through* the tube.
- Punch two holes at the top and thread yarn through to make a necklace.
- Instruct them that whenever they feel scared or unfocused, they can look through their ‘Jesus Focus-Finder’ to remind themselves to fix their eyes on Jesus, not the things around them.
