These aren’t just for show, are they? They use their powers to help people, to save the day, and to make the world a better place!
Guess what? We might not be swinging through cities or flying with a cape, but every single one of *you* has special talents, skills, and gifts! You do! God has given each of you something amazing, like your very own superhero abilities! And just like superheroes, God wants you to use those gifts right now – not later, not someday – but *right now* to show His love and help grow His Kingdom!
Today, we’re diving into a super important story Jesus told. It’s a story about three servants and some very special gifts, and it’s going to teach us a HUGE lesson about not hiding our shine! Let’s jump into God’s Word!

One day, their teacher, Mrs. Davison, announced a school-wide mural project for the main hallway. The theme was ‘Our Amazing Community.’ Everyone was buzzing! Henry, who was great at everything and loved to be in the spotlight, immediately volunteered to lead a big section, excitedly sketching out his ideas for sports heroes and school mascots. Lincoln, another classmate, was busy gathering fun facts and historical details for his part. But Ellison? She shrunk in her seat. Step-by-Step Guide:
Alright everyone, gather ’round! Look at this flashlight! (Turn it on) Woah! Look at that bright light! It’s really shining, isn’t it? This light is super useful. It helps us see in the dark, maybe find a lost toy, or even read a book when the power goes out. Now, what if I told you that you all have something inside you just like this light? You have amazing talents, gifts, and skills! But sometimes, we might feel a little shy about our talents, right? (Hold up the dark cloth.) What do you think would happen if I took this light, and I covered it up completely with this cloth? (Cover the flashlight so no light escapes.) Can you see the light now? No way! It’s still there, still working, but it’s totally hidden. Is it helping anyone like this? Nope! That’s exactly what happens when we hide our special talents. They’re still inside us, but no one can see them, and they can’t help anyone. Now, let’s take this light and put it in this clear jar! (Place the flashlight/candle in the jar. Optionally, add glitter or beads around it.) Look at how the light shines now! It illuminates the jar, it’s beautiful, and it can light up the room! “For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.” (Matthew 25:29a)
Jesus told a story about a rich man who was going on a long trip. Before he left, he called his three servants and gave them different amounts of money, called ‘talents,’ to take care of while he was gone. To the first servant, he gave five talents – that was a LOT of money, enough to live on for many, many years! To the second servant, he gave two talents. And to the third servant, he gave one talent. He trusted them, didn’t he? What do you think they did with it?
Well, the first servant immediately went out and traded with his five talents, working hard, and guess what? He doubled his money! He turned five talents into ten! Wow! The second servant, with his two talents, did the exact same thing! He worked hard and doubled his money, turning two talents into four. Can you believe it? They were smart and brave! But then there was the third servant. What did he do? Instead of using his one talent, he was scared. He went and dug a hole in the ground and hid the money, burying it deep, deep down.
After a long, long time, the master returned and called his servants to see what they had done. The first two proudly showed their doubled money, and the master was thrilled! He praised them, saying, “Well done, good and faithful servants!” But when the third servant came, he said, “Master, I knew you were a hard man, so I was afraid. I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here it is – exactly what you gave me.” The master was very disappointed. He called the servant wicked and lazy because he hadn’t even tried to use what he was given. He took the one talent away and gave it to the servant who had ten, because everyone who uses what they have will get more!
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: Before starting the story, hand out a small, smooth, polished stone to half the children and a dull, rough, unpolished stone to the other half. Ask them to hold it and feel the difference. During the story, when you talk about the servant burying the talent, tell the kids with the dull stones to imagine theirs is hidden, and those with the polished ones to imagine theirs is shining. Reiterate at the end that God wants our gifts to be like the polished, shining stone.
Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us
Woah! What an ending! So, what does this amazing story mean for *us*? It means that God, our Heavenly Father, is like that master, and He has given each of *you* incredible, unique talents – your very own ‘talents’ like the money in the story! Maybe you’re an awesome artist like Ellison, a fantastic singer, a super helper, a great friend, a brilliant problem-solver, or a creative builder! God gives us these gifts, not to hide them away because we’re shy or afraid of what others think, but to use them! Why? Because when we use our gifts, we’re not just making ourselves happy; we’re showing God’s love to the world, helping others, and helping His Kingdom grow! We can trust God’s Word, because He is a loving God who created us specially, and He knows the best way for us to live and shine!

🌟 Talent Show Charades
Divide the class into two teams. Prepare slips of paper with different talents or skills written on them (e.g., singing, dancing, drawing, building, telling jokes, running fast, helping others, listening). A player from one team picks a slip and acts out the talent without speaking while their team guesses. Set a time limit (e.g., 60 seconds). If they guess correctly, they get a point. The team with the most points wins. This game encourages kids to think about different talents.
💖 Pass the Gift
Have children sit in a circle. Play some upbeat music. Pass a ‘gift’ (a wrapped box or a soft ball) around the circle. When the music stops, the child holding the ‘gift’ shares one talent or skill they have or one they admire in a classmate. Encourage them to be specific and positive. Continue until everyone who wants to share has had a turn. This promotes positive affirmation and self-discovery.
✨ Team Talent Challenge
Divide the class into small groups (3-4 kids). Give each group a challenge using simple classroom items (e.g., ‘Build the tallest tower using only 10 paper clips and 5 index cards,’ or ‘Create a short skit about helping a friend using only 3 props’). The goal is for each team member to contribute their unique talents (e.g., one might be good at planning, another at building, another at communicating ideas). Supplies Needed:

- Markers or crayons
- Glue (liquid white glue works best for glitter)
- Optional: battery-operated tea light candle (one per child, if available and safe)
Instructions:
- Today, we’re going to make a ‘Shining Talent Jar’ to remind us not to hide our amazing gifts!
- First, each of you will get a jar. This jar represents *you* and all the amazing talents God has given you!
- Next, take some glitter, sequins, or beads. These shiny things represent your special talents – your art, your kindness, your ability to make people laugh, your quick thinking, your helpfulness! Put them inside your jar. Don’t be shy! The more shine, the better!
- Now, on a piece of paper, write down one or two of your favorite talents or things you’re really good at. Decorate it with markers or crayons. This will be your ‘talent label’ for the jar.
- Glue your label onto the outside of your jar.
- (Optional: If you have tea lights) Place a battery-operated tea light inside your jar. Turn it on! See how it makes all your glitter and sequins sparkle even more? This reminds us that when we use our talents, they shine even brighter and show God’s light to the world!
- Take your Shining Talent Jar home and put it somewhere you’ll see it every day to remind you to ‘Unbury Your Shine!’
