Today, we’re going to dive into an incredible true story from the Bible about a group of people who were about to start a HUGE new adventure. They were scared, but God showed them, in a spectacular way, that He always goes before His people and gives them everything they need!

“The Lord goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)
Imagine this: After 40 long years of wandering, God’s people, the Israelites, were finally standing on the edge of the Promised Land! But there was one giant problem, literally: the mighty Jordan River, overflowing its banks! And they had to cross it. No bridges, no boats. Just them, and a raging river. Moses, their old leader, had passed away, and now Joshua was in charge. Woah, big shoes to fill, right? Joshua told the people, ‘Get ready! For tomorrow, the Lord will do amazing things among you!’
The next morning, Joshua gave the order: ‘Priests, pick up the Ark of the Covenant—that’s God’s special promise box—and walk into the Jordan River!’ Can you imagine? Walking right into a raging river! But as soon as the priests’ feet touched the water, something incredible happened. The waters piling up from upstream stopped flowing and stood up in a heap! Downstream, the river flowed away, leaving a perfectly dry path right through the middle of the riverbed! Hold on… a dry riverbed!?
The entire nation walked across on dry ground! Once everyone was safely on the other side, God told Joshua to pick 12 large stones from the very spot where the priests’ feet had stood. They stacked these stones on the riverbank as a memorial. Joshua said, ‘When your children ask, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the Jordan River stopped flowing before the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord!’ These stones would forever remind them—and us—of God’s faithfulness, His power, and how He went before them, guiding them safely into their new adventure!
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: 🙋 Teacher: Pass around a few smooth, clean river stones or even just some garden rocks. Have the kids feel them. Ask, ‘What do these stones feel like? Imagine how the Israelites felt, touching these exact kinds of stones in a riverbed that was normally full of water!’

How do we know God is faithful? We know because He has a perfect track record! He did it for His people back then, and His promises never change. We can trust His Word, the Bible, because it’s true, and it tells us about His character—He is a God who keeps His promises. 🎒 Backpack Dash!
Set up two lines of empty backpacks (3-5 backpacks per team) a short distance from the starting line. Place a pile of ‘supplies’ (e.g., small blocks, beanbags, balls) at the starting line. On ‘Go!’, the first player from each team grabs one ‘supply,’ races to their first backpack, places the item inside, races back, tags the next player. This continues until all backpacks have at least one item. The first team to fill their backpacks wins. Reinforce: Just like we quickly filled our backpacks, God quickly provides for our needs!
🚶♀️ Follow the Leader’s Path
Have children stand in a line. The teacher (or a designated leader) walks around the room, making various movements (e.g., tiptoeing, hopping, crawling under a chair, stepping over a ‘river’ made of blue fabric). The children must carefully follow every step and movement of the leader. Occasionally, the leader should make a challenging move. Emphasize how God leads us, and we can trust His path, even when it looks difficult, just like He led the Israelites.
❓ Remember Me?
Place 5-7 random objects on a tray (e.g., a crayon, a toy car, a leaf, a small book, a key). Cover the tray with a cloth. Give children 30 seconds to look at the objects, then cover them again. Each child writes down or says aloud as many objects as they can remember. After a few rounds, connect it to remembering God’s faithfulness. ‘It’s hard to remember a few objects, but imagine how hard it would be to remember everything God has done if we didn’t have the Bible or those stones of remembrance!’
🎨 Themed Craft: 🎨 My God-Equipped Backpack Craft
Supplies Needed:
- Small paper lunch bags (one per child)
- Construction paper in various colors
- Crayons, markers, colored pencils
- Glue sticks or liquid glue
- Scissors (child-safe)
- Optional: Yarn or string for straps, stickers, glitter
Instructions:
- 🌈 Give each child a paper lunch bag. This will be their ‘backpack.’ Have them decorate the outside of their bag with their name, school year, and drawings of things they are excited for or things they might face (e.g., books, sports equipment, friends).
- ✂️ From construction paper, have them cut out shapes to represent the ‘supplies’ God gives us: hearts (for love), stars or lightning bolts (for strength), clouds or doves (for peace), lights (for guidance). You can pre-cut some if time is short.
- ✍️ On each shape, have them write one of God’s ‘provisions’: LOVE, STRENGTH, PEACE, GUIDANCE, COMFORT, PROVISION. They can also write our memory verse (Deuteronomy 31:8) on a separate strip of paper.
- 🎨 Glue these ‘supplies’ inside their paper backpack or on the outside. Encourage them to place the memory verse inside, as a reminder they can ‘pull out’ anytime.
- ✨ Optional: Help them punch two holes at the top of the bag and thread yarn through to create backpack straps, or just add stickers and glitter for extra fun!
- 🙏 Explain that just like this craft backpack holds their reminders, God’s love, strength, and peace are always with them in their real lives, ready for whatever they face!
