The Two-Penny Hero: A Powerful Bible Lesson on Giving Your Everything to God

If you want your students or children to understand that giving isn’t measured in dollars, but in the size of their heart, you’ve come to the right place!

The story of the Two-Penny Hero—the poor widow found in Luke 21:1-4 —flips that idea completely upside down. It shows us a powerful truth: True generosity means giving to God with your whole heart, no matter how small the gift seems.

The lesson is simple: God looks at your motive, not the amount.

The True Story: More Than Money

Jesus was sitting near the temple treasury, watching people drop their money into the offering box. All the important, wealthy people came by and loudly dropped in big sums of money.

But Jesus wasn’t watching the rich people. He was watching a quiet, poor woman who had almost nothing left in the world.

This poor widow walked up and put in only two tiny copper coins. It barely made any noise, and no one except for Jesus and His disciples even noticed.

Immediately, Jesus turned to His friends and said, “She has put in more than all the others!

  • The rich people gave from their overflow—the money they didn’t even need.
  • The widow gave from her need. She put in all she had to live on.

Her gift wasn’t big in size, but it was huge in sacrifice. She gave her entire heart to God.

The Modern Parable: The Case of the Wobbly Robot

To help kids connect this ancient lesson to their lives, consider the story of Maya, which is a perfect modern parable of giving your all:

Maya was saving every dollar for a super cool toy robot. She was only three dollars away from her dream! Then, her school announced a fundraiser for a tiny animal shelter that desperately needed blankets and food.

She had six whole dollars—her entire robot fund. She thought, Six dollars won’t even buy one big bag of dog food!.

When the collection jar passed, Maya felt the doubt. Other kids dropped in big, crisp five-dollar bills. Maya clutched her three crumpled dollar bills. She dropped in two, but slid the last dollar back into her pocket, “just in case”.

She soon realized that while the other kids gave from their “extra” money, her three dollars were her “all“. The real joy wasn’t in the robot; it was in the small feeling of giving with her whole heart.

Easy Object Lesson: The Comparison Challenge

An object lesson is the best way to make the concept of giving your everything truly stick.

Supplies You’ll Need:

  • A crisp $20 bill
  • Two small coins (like two pennies or two dimes)
  • Two small, clear cups or containers

Instructions:

  1. The Big Gift: Hold up the $20 bill and place it in the first cup. Explain that this is a big gift, but it’s only a small part of the giver’s total money.
  2. The Sacrifice: Hold up the two small coins and place them in the second cup. Explain that this looks tiny, but what if this is everything the person had?. They had nothing left.
  3. The Point: The person who gave their all, even if it was just two pennies, showed the biggest heart of generosity because they kept nothing back. God cares about the sacrifice and the love, not the size of the gift!

Becoming a “Two-Penny Hero” Today

The story teaches us that God wants our whole heart more than our big pockets. Being a “Two-Penny Hero” means you give your best to God:

  • Your Time: Give up your last hour of screen time to help a parent.
  • Your Talent: Give your best effort in school or with your chores, even if no one is watching.
  • Your Kindness: Spend your last piece of chewing gum to cheer up a friend.

That small act is a massive gift in God’s eyes because it costs you something real. Don’t look at what others are giving. Just ask yourself: Am I giving God my whole heart, or just my leftover change?

Take the Lesson Home: The “Whole Heart” Jar

Use this simple activity to keep the theme of Giving Your Everything alive all week long:

  1. Find a Jar: Find any old, empty, clear jar or vase and decorate it as your “Whole Heart” Jar.
  2. Record the Sacrifice: Each evening, have your family write down on a small slip of paper an act of sacrifice or something they gave with their whole heart that day.
    • Examples: “Shared my favorite snack,” “Forgave my brother right away,” “Did a chore without complaining”.
  3. Celebrate: Place the papers in the jar. At the end of the week, read them aloud and celebrate how many “whole heart” gifts God saw in your family!

Let’s focus on being the Two-Penny Heroes who give their best this week!
