The Ultimate John the Baptist Lesson for Kids (Free Sermon, Crafts & Games!)

Ever struggle to teach kids about humility in a world that screams “look at me”? How do you explain that our purpose isn’t always to be the star of the show, but to point others to the real Hero? It’s a tough concept, but one of the most powerful examples in the Bible is John the Baptist.

If you’re looking for a complete John the Baptist lesson for kids that is engaging, memorable, and packed with fun, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve put together everything you need—from a modern parable to an easy craft—to teach this powerful lesson on purpose and humility. This entire lesson, “The Great Hand-Off,” is available for you to use.

Our ministry is dedicated to providing high-quality resources like this for free. If you find this lesson helpful, please consider a donation to help us continue our work.

The Core Lesson: Pointing to the Real Hero

The main theme of this lesson is that your purpose isn’t to be the most popular or important person, but to be a sign that points others to the one who truly is: Jesus. The sermon explains that John the Baptist was like the ultimate movie trailer for Jesus. People came from all over to hear him speak , but John knew his job wasn’t to collect fans for himself. His purpose was to prepare people for someone greater.

When John saw Jesus, he famously announced, “Look, the Lamb of God!” , essentially shouting, “He’s the one! He’s the main event!”. His own followers then left him to follow Jesus, and John’s mission was a success!

A Modern Parable Kids Will Understand: “The Ultimate Shout-Out”

To make this concept relatable, the lesson includes a modern parable about Leo, a superstar video game streamer. Leo discovers a new streamer named Sam who is more brilliant at the game than he is. Instead of getting jealous or stealing Sam’s ideas , Leo uses his massive platform to give Sam a “shout-out,” telling his millions of followers, “Stop watching me. Go follow him”. Leo knew his job was to point others to the truth.

5-Minute Object Lesson: Be an Arrow, Not the Treasure

This is a simple yet powerful illustration perfect for any Sunday school class or children’s church moment.

The Idea: Hold up a large cardboard arrow. Ask the kids if the arrow itself is the treasure. Of course not! Its only job is to point to the treasure. An arrow that only points to itself is useless.

The Point: John the Baptist knew he wasn’t the treasure; he was the arrow. Our lives should be less about saying, “Look how great I am!” and more about being an arrow that points people to how great Jesus is.

  • Scissors
  • Popsicle sticks
  • Markers
  • Glue

Instructions:

  1. Have kids trace their hand on the foam with their index finger pointing up.
  2. Cut the shape out.
  3. On the palm, write phrases like “Jesus is #1” or “Follow Him!”.
  4. Draw an arrow on the pointing finger.
  5. Glue a popsicle stick on the back as a handle.

Fun Games to Reinforce the Lesson

Bring the theme to life with these active and engaging games.

  • Follow the Light : In a dim room, one person (the “Pointer”) uses a flashlight to create a path of light on the wall and floor for others to follow. It’s a great illustration of keeping our eyes on the one who lights the way.
  • Spur-On Relay : This is a simple relay race with a twist. Before a player can run, their returning teammate must give them a specific, genuine encouragement. This teaches kids how to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds” as the memory verse says.
