The Problem: Why Human Love Isn’t Enough

Valentine’s Day often focuses on “stuff”—cards, candy, and the hope that a crush notices us. But human love can be like a battery that eventually runs out. We often try to “manufacture” kindness when we are feeling like a “squeezed-dry juice box”—empty, grumpy, and unappreciated.

The secret we teach in this Valentine’s Day children’s sermon is that we aren’t the source of love. God is.

Bible Verse: The Foundation of Our Love

“We love because he first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19 (NIV)

Object Lesson for Kids: The Bottomless Heart

This object lesson on kindness for kids uses simple household items to demonstrate a powerful spiritual truth.

Supply List:

  • A clear pitcher of water (labeled “God’s Love“)
  • A small sponge (labeled “My Heart“)
  • A dry bowl

The Point: Show the kids the dry sponge. When you try to “squeeze” love out of it into the bowl, nothing happens. This is what happens when we try to be kind while we are “dry” and tired.

However, when you submerge the sponge in the pitcher (God’s Love) until it is heavy and dripping, it overflows! We must “soak” in God’s love through prayer and His Word first so that kindness happens naturally.

A Modern Parable: The Case of the Infinite Juice Box

In this story, a 4th grader named Maya tries to buy her way into being the “kindest” person in class with fancy truffles and glittery cards. But when her friends aren’t grateful or accidentally ruin her cards, her “love tank” hits empty.

Her coach, Mr. Miller, teaches her that she is trying to give water from a tiny cup she forgot to refill. He points to the school’s water fountain, which never runs out because it’s connected to a massive tank. To love ungrateful or grumpy people, we must stay plugged into the “Big Tank”—God’s love.

Fun Valentine’s Day Games and Crafts

Looking for a Valentine’s Day craft for Sunday School? This “Overflowing Cup” reminds kids to stay full of the Spirit.

The “Overflowing Cup” Wall Hanging

  • Step 1: Decorate a paper cup with “GOD’S LOVE” and stickers.
  • Step 2: Punch a hole in the bottom and tie several long ribbons through it so they hang down like “overflowing” water.
  • Step 3: On the ribbons, write the names of people you want to show God’s love to this week.

The Unconditional Freeze Dance

Play worship music. When it stops, shout out a “bad” behavior (like “I forgot to clean my room!”). The kids strike a silly pose to remember that even when we mess up, God’s love doesn’t stop.

The Bottom Line: You Are God’s Favorite

The ultimate goal of this children’s Bible lesson on 1 John 4 is to help kids realize their value. If God had a refrigerator, your picture would be on it. You are a VIP in the Kingdom of Heaven.
