Teacher’s Overview & Lesson Focus

🍎 Teacher’s Guide: 🍎 Quick Teacher’s Guide: This lesson dives into the powerful story of Jesus’ baptism, found in Matthew 3:13-17. Children will discover *why* Jesus chose to be baptized – not because He needed to be clean, but to model perfect obedience and ‘fulfill all righteousness.’ The main takeaway is that Jesus obeyed God to show us the way, and because of His obedience, God publicly declared His love and pleasure, giving us an incredible example of how much God delights in our obedience too!

Hey everyone! Have you ever tried super hard to make someone happy? Maybe you cleaned your room without being asked, or you shared your favorite toy with a friend, or you studied extra hard for a test to make your parents proud? And then, when you saw that smile on their face, or heard them say, ‘I’m so proud of you!’ β€” how did that make *you* feel? Pretty great, right? Knowing you made someone happy, especially someone you love, is an awesome feeling!

Well, guess what? There’s someone who loves us even more than anyone on Earth, and guess what else? We can make HIM smile too! Today, we’re going to talk about a super special moment when God Himself burst with joy and publicly declared His love and pleasure for His Son, Jesus. And it all happened because Jesus did something incredibly important, something that showed us the way to make God’s heart super happy!

Get ready, because we’re about to plunge into the Bible, to a time when Jesus was just starting His big, important work here on Earth. Our story today comes from the book of Matthew, and it’s all about Jesus’ baptism and what it teaches us about obeying God. This moment was so important, it literally made God speak from heaven!

Drawing from the scripture passage of πŸ“– Matthew 3:13-17 (Jesus’ Baptism), this lesson provides a clear, biblically-grounded foundation of trust and understanding for children of all ages.

Modern Parable: πŸƒ The Big Tryout

Lincoln, Carter, Millie, and Gideon were all buzzing with excitement – and a little bit of nerves! Today was the big tryout for the school track team. Gideon, with his long strides and quick feet, looked super confident. Millie and Carter were chatting excitedly about all the different events. But Lincoln? Woah, his stomach felt like it was doing a triple flip! He loved to run, but the high jump obstacle looked HUGE!

As they lined up, the coach explained each event. Lincoln felt a knot tighten in his stomach when she pointed to the high jump bar, set higher than he’d ever attempted. ‘You can do it, Lincoln!’ Millie whispered, giving him a quick, encouraging nudge. Carter added, ‘Just remember what Gideon said about focusing on your form!’ Gideon, who’d successfully cleared it many times, had shared some great advice from his own coach: ‘Look at the bar, visualize clearing it, then trust your legs!’ But the fear still tugged at Lincoln.

It was Lincoln’s turn. His heart thumped like a drum solo. He remembered Gideon’s calm, steady voice, echoing his coach’s words. He took a deep breath, pictured himself sailing over, and sprinted forward. One, two, three steps… JUMP! He soared! His feet landed perfectly on the mat. He did it! A huge cheer went up from Millie and Carter, and Gideon gave him a thumbs-up. Lincoln hadn’t just cleared the bar; he’d cleared a hurdle of fear, by remembering and trusting good advice, even when it felt scary.

Think about that for a second! Lincoln’s courage, sparked by remembering and acting on wise counsel, helped him overcome his fear and achieve something amazing. It wasn’t always easy, and it took a lot of bravery to just *try*. Just like Lincoln’s big leap, when we choose to remember and follow good instructions, especially from God, we’re choosing a path that always leads to wonderful outcomes. Our obedience, even when it’s tough, honors the one who gave the instructions and shows we trust them completely!

Interactive Sunday School Object Lesson: πŸ’§ The Sticky Situation of Obedience

Children learn best when they can see, hear, and feel a concept. This “Plunge into Purpose!” children’s sermon features a powerful, memorable object lesson using simple household items to demonstrate the core spiritual truth: Just as some things naturally follow a path and others resist, obedience chooses to follow God’s way, bringing pleasure to Him..

πŸ₯š Object Lesson Outline

Core Point: Just as some things naturally follow a path and others resist, obedience chooses to follow God’s way, bringing pleasure to Him.

Supplies Needed:

  • Clear plastic jar or glass vase
  • Water
  • Cooking oil (any kind)
  • A small, heavy pebble or stone
  • A small toy boat or a plastic bottle cap

Step-by-Step Guide:

Get your clear jar and fill it about halfway with water. Hold it up and explain that this water represents God’s way – clear, pure, and how things are supposed to be. Now, slowly pour about an inch of cooking oil on top of the water. Ask the kids, ‘What’s happening? Are they mixing?’ (They won’t mix; the oil will float on top). Explain that sometimes, our own stubbornness or wanting to do things our way can be like this oil – it resists God’s way, it doesn’t mix well, and it just floats on top, doing its own thing. Now, pick up the small pebble. ‘This little stone, though it might look ordinary, represents obedience,’ you’ll say. ‘When Jesus was baptized, it was an act of perfect obedience, a simple, clear choice to follow God’s plan.’ Drop the pebble into the jar. What happens? (It immediately sinks through the oil and the water to the very bottom). ‘Woah! Did you see that? The pebble didn’t resist; it went exactly where it was supposed to go, right through the oil and into the water, resting at the bottom. That’s what obedience is like! It cuts through all the resistance and goes straight to God’s heart, pleasing Him perfectly!’ You can then place the toy boat on the oil layer and ask, ‘Where does the boat stay? What would happen if we put the pebble on the boat?’ (The boat floats, but the pebble would sink the boat, showing the weight of obedience always goes to the right place).

Bible Story & Sermon Study: 😁 God’s Happy Heart!

This moment was so important, it literally made God speak from heaven!

πŸ“– Scripture Reading: πŸ“– Matthew 3:13-17 (Jesus’ Baptism)

“And a voice from heaven said, β€œThis is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”” (Matthew 3:17)

So, picture this: Jesus, a grown man, walked all the way to the Jordan River. John the Baptist was there, a wild and wonderful prophet who was baptizing people as a sign of their turning away from sin and toward God. John was baptizing lots of people, but when Jesus showed up, John felt totally shocked! ‘Wait, me baptize YOU?’ John said, ‘No way! You should be baptizing me! You’re perfect!’

But Jesus, with a gentle smile, told John, ‘Let it be so for now. It is right for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.’ See, Jesus wasn’t being baptized because He had sins to wash away – He was perfect! Instead, He was showing us exactly how to live, how to obey God’s plan, and how to start a new life following Him. He was modeling perfect obedience right from the beginning!

So, John, trusting Jesus’ words, baptized Him in the Jordan River. And the moment Jesus came up out of the water, something absolutely incredible happened! The heavens opened up, God’s Holy Spirit came down like a dove and rested on Jesus. And then, a voice, a HUGE, booming voice from heaven, said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ Woah! God Himself spoke! He was SO proud and happy with Jesus’ obedience!

πŸ–οΈ Sensory Engagement Element: πŸ‘ƒ Sensory Element: During the story, have a small bowl of water ready. After describing Jesus coming up from the water, let children gently dip one finger into the water, feeling the coolness, to help them imagine the baptism experience and the freshness of new beginnings.

Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us

🌟 Lessons For Us: So, what does this amazing story mean for us? Why did Jesus, who never sinned, choose to be baptized? Because He was showing us the *way*! He was obeying God the Father perfectly, setting an example for all of us. When God said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased,’ it wasn’t just a casual comment! It was God shouting, ‘Aha! This is My plan, this is My Son, and I am so incredibly happy with His choice to obey!’ This teaches us that God delights in our obedience too. When we choose to follow Jesus’ example, when we listen to God’s Word and do what He asks – whether it’s loving our neighbors, telling the truth, or forgiving others – we are making God’s heart happy. We can trust His Word because He is faithful, and His plan for us, just like for Jesus, leads to His pleasure and our true purpose.

Children’s Ministry Drama Skit: 🎭 The Big Splash of Trust

Reinforce the message with a live drama skit! Our curriculum pack includes an easy-to-stage script designed for the characters: JOHN (John the Baptist, energetic and a bit bewildered), JESUS (Calm, wise, kind), MILLIE (Curious bystander, age 9), GIDEON (Slightly skeptical bystander, age 10), NARRATOR (Voice of God / Storyteller). It brings the theme of “Obedience, Baptism, and God’s Love and Pleasure” to life through humor, relatable dialogue, and engaging storytelling.

🎭 Skit Blueprint & Script Excerpt

Characters:

  • JOHN (John the Baptist, energetic and a bit bewildered)
  • JESUS (Calm, wise, kind)
  • MILLIE (Curious bystander, age 9)
  • GIDEON (Slightly skeptical bystander, age 10)
  • NARRATOR (Voice of God / Storyteller)

[Setting: A simple stage with a blue fabric ‘river’ in the middle. Maybe a cardboard cutout tree or two. JOHN is standing in the ‘river’ looking serious, motioning for people to come.]

MILLIE: (Whispering to GIDEON) Woah, Gideon, look at John! He looks intense today!

GIDEON: Yeah, he always does. But people say he’s really good at telling you how to get right with God. He makes you think.

JOHN: (Calling out) Repent! Prepare the way for the Lord! Who wants to turn from their old ways and plunge into a new path?

MILLIE: (Nudges Gideon) See? Plunge into a new path! Kinda like Lincoln making that high jump at tryouts, huh?

GIDEON: (Nodding slowly) Yeah, taking a big step, even when it’s scary. But this feels… bigger.

JESUS: (Walks calmly towards the river where John is) John, I have come to be baptized by you.

JOHN: (Gasps, eyes wide) WHAT?! No, no, no! Wait, think about that for a second! I need to be baptized by YOU! You’re the Messiah! You’re perfect!

MILLIE: (To Gideon) Perfect? Wow. No fear of a high jump for Him, I guess!

GIDEON: (Frowning slightly) But if He’s perfect, why does He need to be baptized? Isn’t baptism for when you’ve done wrong and want to start fresh?

JESUS: (Smiling gently at John) Let it be so now, John. It is right for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.

JOHN: (Still looks confused, but slowly nods) To fulfill… righteousness. Okay, Jesus. If you say so.

MILLIE: (Whispering excitedly) He’s really going to do it!

GIDEON: (Muttering) I still don’t totally get it. Why would a perfect person need to be baptized?

JESUS: (Steps into the ‘river’ with John. John puts his hand on Jesus’ head and dips Him under the ‘water’ briefly. As Jesus comes up, a bright light can be shone from above, and a ‘dove’ prop might be lowered.)

NARRATOR: (Voice booming, reverent and loving, from offstage) And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’

MILLIE: (Gasps, hands over mouth) WOAH! Did you hear that?!

GIDEON: (Jaw dropped) That was… incredible. The sky just spoke! ‘Well pleased’!

JOHN: (Stares up, beaming, then looks at Jesus with awe) He truly is the Son of God. His obedience… it brings glory!

JESUS: (Looks up, then to John and the bystanders, with a serene smile) This is the way. To obey the Father, to do what is right.

MILLIE: (To Gideon) So, He was baptized not because He needed it, but because God TOLD Him to?

GIDEON: (Nodding thoughtfully) And when He obeyed, God literally shouted from heaven how happy He was! It was an act of… trust, even when it didn’t seem to make sense to us.

MILLIE: Like remembering Gideon’s high jump advice, even when it looked impossible! You gotta trust the one who knows the way!

GIDEON: Exactly! And God knows the way best of all. And He really loves when we follow Him. That makes His heart happy!

JOHN: (Spreading his arms) See! This is why! Jesus shows us how to please God by doing His will. This is the purpose!

JESUS: (Smiling) Indeed. Plunge into purpose, by obeying the Father.

[NARRATOR, MILLIE, GIDEON, JOHN all look up in wonder.]

Themed Sunday School Games & Craft Template

Keep the momentum going with active learning games and a themed craft that kids can take home to show their families!

🎯 Active Games

🚢 Follow the Leader – Obedience Edition

One child is the ‘leader’ and stands at the front. The other children line up behind them. The leader performs actions (e.g., hopping, spinning, touching their toes, marching) and the rest of the group must perfectly mimic their actions. If someone doesn’t follow an instruction correctly, they can either sit out for a round or become the new leader. Emphasize listening and obeying exactly. Play a few rounds, letting different children be the leader. Connect it to how we ‘follow’ Jesus and obey God.

πŸ‘‚ Whisper Challenge

Divide the children into teams of 4-6. Have each team line up. Whisper a phrase related to the lesson (e.g., ‘God is pleased with obedience,’ ‘Jesus showed us the way,’ ‘Heaven opened up’) to the first person in each line. That person then whispers it to the next, and so on, until it reaches the last person. The last person says the phrase out loud. The goal is for the phrase to stay accurate. Highlight how important it is to listen carefully and obey the ‘message’ accurately, just like we listen to God’s Word.

❀️ Happy Heart Relay

Divide the group into two teams. Place two ‘happy heart’ cutouts (or any small object) at the other end of the room for each team. Provide each team with a spoon or a small cup. The first player must carefully carry their ‘happy heart’ on the spoon/cup across the room to a designated spot, place it down, and run back. The next player goes. The first team to successfully move all their ‘happy hearts’ wins. Emphasize carefulness and following the rules (like not dropping the heart or running with it in your hand) – connecting it to how careful and obedient we are with God’s commands makes Him happy.

🎨 Themed Craft: ☁️ God’s Happy Heart Mobile

Supplies Needed:

  • Paper plates (one per child)
  • Construction paper (various colors)
  • Crayons or markers
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • String or yarn
  • Glue sticks or tape

Instructions:

1. 🎨 Decorate the Plate: Give each child a paper plate. Have them decorate one side to look like a happy, smiling sun, or a cloud with a rainbow. This represents God’s joy and love when we obey. They can write ‘God’s Happy Heart!’ on it. 2. βœ‚οΈ Cut Out Shapes: From the construction paper, have the children cut out several heart shapes and cloud shapes (about 3-5 per child). 3. ✍️ Write Acts of Obedience: On each heart or cloud, have the children write or draw one way they can obey God or their parents this week (e.g., ‘Help clean my room,’ ‘Share my snack,’ ‘Listen to my teacher,’ ‘Tell the truth’). 4. πŸ•³οΈ Punch Holes: Help children punch a hole at the bottom of their decorated paper plate and one hole at the top of each heart/cloud. 5. 🧡 Assemble the Mobile: Cut pieces of string or yarn (various lengths). Help the children tie one end of a string to a heart/cloud and the other end to the bottom of the paper plate, so the hearts/clouds hang down like a mobile. Make sure to tie a loop of string to the top of the paper plate for hanging. 6. πŸŽ‰ Display: As they work, remind them that each act of obedience makes God’s heart happy, just like the happy sun/cloud on their mobile!
