🌟 Obedience to God When You Can’t See the Plan: The Great “Yes, God!” Adventure

The Most Important Step on Your Journey is Saying “Yes, God!”

Are you a busy parent, a Sunday school teacher, or a devoted mentor looking for a powerful lesson on faith and obedience to God? We all know what it feels like when life feels chaotic, inconvenient, or when a big plan falls apart. How do you explain to a child (or remind yourself!) that following God is the most important journey, even when the path doesn’t make any sense?

The answer lies in one simple but powerful word: Obedience to God.

Based on our popular children’s sermon, “The Great ‘Yes, God!’ Adventure,” this post will give you a complete, ready-to-use lesson plan, a fun craft, and an at-home activity to help you and your family learn how to live by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7).

🔑 Key Bible Lesson: Following God’s Plan Like Mary and Joseph

The story of Mary and Joseph traveling to Bethlehem is the perfect example of obedience to God when you can’t see the plan. Imagine being Mary, heavily pregnant, and then suddenly an announcement requires you to take a long, hard journey on a donkey to a city for a census.

  • The Inconvenience: This journey was chaotic, confusing, and a huge inconvenience. Their perfect plans were shattered, much like Maya’s last-minute trip in our modern parable.
  • The Roadblock: Even when they arrived, there was “no room” at the inn. A huge setback!
  • The Choice: Instead of complaining or giving up, Mary and Joseph chose to say, “Yes, God!” to the hard journey and the uncomfortable stable.

Their simple faith and obedience put them in the exact place God needed them to be for Jesus to be born. God uses our obedience—even to the small, inconvenient things—to complete His big plan.

🎒 The 5-Minute Object Lesson: What Would You Pack?

This quick, hands-on lesson perfectly illustrates that obedience to God is more important than comfort.

Supplies Needed:

  • One backpack
  • Random items: A heavy dictionary (representing the weight of the journey), a cozy blanket or pillow (representing comfort), and a piece of paper with “God’s Plan” written on it.

How to Teach It:

  1. Ask a volunteer to pack three things for a long, unexpected trip. Let them choose comfortable items first, like the blanket or pillow.
  2. Explain that Mary and Joseph couldn’t pack much either, but their most important asset was their obedience and faith in God.
  3. Remove the comfortable items. Replace them with the heavy dictionary and the “God’s Plan” paper.
  4. The Point: Show the bag. It’s heavy and uncomfortable, but the most important thing inside is “God’s Plan”. When you obey God’s plan, even when it’s heavy or uncomfortable, you’re carrying the only thing you truly need!

✨ Craft Idea: Create Your Own “Faith Map”

A great visual to reinforce trusting the journey, not just the destination.

What You’ll Need:

  • Index cards or small pieces of cardstock
  • Hole punch and string or yarn
  • Markers or crayons
  • Small heart or star stickers

Instructions:

  1. Give each child 3-5 cards (“Map Points”).
  2. Card 1 (Past Hard): Write or draw a picture of a past hard moment.
  3. Middle Cards (The Steps): Write “Trust,” “Obey,” or “Pray”.
  4. Final Card (Future Good): Write or draw a picture of a good future thing (like “Be Brave” or “Love God”).
  5. Punch holes and string them together to make a small hanging map.
  6. Kids can put a star or heart sticker next to any card where they said “Yes, God!”.

This mobile reminds us that God connects all the parts—the hard, the Trust parts, and the good parts—into a beautiful, unfolding journey!

🏠 Family Challenge: The “Yes, God!” Stone

Take this lesson on obedience to God home with this simple, tactile activity.

  1. Find Your Stone: Get a small, smooth rock or large bean for each family member.
  2. Label It: Use a marker to write the words “YES, GOD!” on the stone.
  3. Placement: Put the stones in an accessible spot, like a nightstand or kitchen counter.
  4. The Challenge: Encourage everyone to pick up their “Yes, God!” Stone when they are asked to do something that seems inconvenient, confusing, or overwhelming. Holding it should prompt them to say “Yes, God” out loud or in their heart, remembering the faithful example of Mary and Joseph.

Every time you choose to trust and obey Him, you open the door for God to turn the chaotic parts of your life into a masterpiece—the story of how He used you for His great purpose.
