“A friend loves at all times. They are there to help when trouble comes.” – Proverbs 17:17
Modern Parable: 🗺️ The Whispering Woods Adventure
Sunlight dappled through the leaves as ten-year-old Lawson and his best friend, Watson, ventured deeper into the Whispering Woods. They were on an epic quest to find the legendary ‘Sparkle Stone’ said to be hidden near the old abandoned mill. Watson, usually fearless, kept glancing over his shoulder. ‘Are you sure this is the right way, Lawson?’ he whispered, his voice a little shaky. Lawson, ever the leader, puffed out his chest. ‘Totally! My map app says it’s just past that big twisted oak!’
As they pressed on, the woods grew darker, and strange shadows danced between the trees. Suddenly, they reached a narrow, rickety old bridge spanning a gurgling stream. Planks were missing, and it looked super unstable. Watson froze. ‘Woah, no way, Lawson! I can’t cross that!’ Lawson sighed. ‘Come on, Watson, we’re almost there! It’s just a little bit wobbly!’ But Watson shook his head, his face pale. ‘What if I fall? What if we both fall? I heard older kids say this bridge is super dangerous, and they laughed at anyone who even tried!’ He felt a strong pull to give up because of what others had said.
Lawson saw his friend’s genuine fear. He remembered his grandpa once telling him, ‘A real adventure isn’t about how brave you are alone, but how brave you are for your friends.’ Lawson took a deep breath. ‘Okay, hold on,’ he said, walking to a thick vine hanging nearby. He tested it, then threw the end to Watson. ‘Here, buddy! We’ll hold onto this together, and I’ll go first. One step at a time, side-by-side!’ Watson’s eyes widened. Lawson didn’t make fun of him, he didn’t leave him. He found a way to help.
Slowly, carefully, gripping the vine and each other’s hands, they made it across. The Sparkle Stone, a geode sparkling with tiny crystals, was indeed just on the other side. They cheered, not just for the stone, but for crossing the bridge together. That day, they learned that the real treasure wasn’t just the Sparkle Stone, but the incredible strength of their friendship – a friendship that protected, stood by, and loved, even when things got wobbly and scary. They remembered that a true friend helps you conquer your fears, not just the physical ones, but also the worries about what others might think.
Interactive Sunday School Object Lesson: 🤝 The Friendship Rope
Children learn best when they can see, hear, and feel a concept. This “Side-by-Side Sidekicks: The Ultimate Upgrade of Friendship” children’s sermon features a powerful, memorable object lesson using simple household items to demonstrate the core spiritual truth: Separate, we are weak, but together, especially with God (the strong rope), our friendships are incredibly strong..
🥚 Object Lesson Outline
Core Point: Separate, we are weak, but together, especially with God (the strong rope), our friendships are incredibly strong.
Supplies Needed:
- Two thin but sturdy ropes (about 3 feet long each)
- One thick, strong rope (about 6 feet long)
- A volunteer
Step-by-Step Guide:
Hold up one thin rope. ‘Who wants to try and break this?’ Let a child try to break it with their hands. It’s likely easy. ‘See? One alone, not so strong.’ Now, hold up the second thin rope and invite another child to try and break it. Again, probably easy. ‘Now, what if we twist these two thin ropes together really, really tightly?’ Twist them together and then invite a child to try and break the combined rope. It should be much harder. ‘Woah! It’s much stronger when they’re together, isn’t it? Our friendships are like this – when we stand together, we’re stronger!’ Hold up the thick rope. ‘But wait! What if we add THIS rope to our friendship? This is like God! He is the strongest of all!’ Twist the two thin ropes and the thick rope together. ‘Now, try to break this!’ It should be impossible. ‘Aha! When our friendships are strengthened by God, they are the strongest they can possibly be! He helps us be side-by-side sidekicks forever!’

📖 Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 18:1-4, 20:1-42 (David & Jonathan’s Friendship)
“A friend loves at all times. They are there to help when trouble comes.” (Proverbs 17:17)
Once upon a time, there was a young shepherd named David who bravely fought a giant named Goliath! After that incredible victory, something amazing happened. Prince Jonathan, the son of King Saul, met David, and it was like they instantly clicked! The Bible says Jonathan’s soul was ‘knit to the soul of David.’ Woah! It means they became super best friends, like brothers. Jonathan even gave David his own robe, sword, bow, and belt – basically, his princely gear! It was a sign of their deep, loyal friendship.
But here’s the twist: King Saul, Jonathan’s dad, started to get super jealous of David. He was so angry that he wanted to hurt David, even kill him! Can you believe it? Jonathan, however, remained loyal to David. Even though David was becoming more popular and might even take his place as king, Jonathan never stopped being David’s friend. He warned David, secretly met with him, and tried to talk to his father about how wrong he was. He risked his own life and future to protect his friend!
Jonathan and David made a covenant, a serious promise, to always be loyal to each other and to look after each other’s families. They came up with secret signals to warn David about his father’s anger. Jonathan shot arrows and gave codes, making sure David knew when it was safe and when it was time to run. In the end, they had to say goodbye, a super sad moment, but they knew their friendship, strengthened by God, would last forever, even across distances and dangers. Jonathan stood by David, protecting him, loving him, and ultimately saving his life.
🖐️ Sensory Engagement Element: Give each child a small piece of string or yarn. As you tell the story of Jonathan giving David his belt, have them try to tie a simple knot in their string, emphasizing how bonds (like knots or friendship) are made stronger.
Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us
What can we learn from David and Jonathan? A whole lot about true friendship! First, a true friend *protects* you. Jonathan risked everything to keep David safe. He didn’t let jealousy or fear stop him from doing what was right for his friend. Think about Lawson helping Watson over the wobbly bridge! Second, a true friend *stands by* you. Even when things got tough and King Saul was furious, Jonathan never abandoned David. He was there, side-by-side. Our memory verse says, ‘They are there to help when trouble comes,’ right? That’s exactly what Jonathan did! Third, a true friend *loves you no matter what*. Jonathan loved David so much that he put David’s well-being above his own royal future. This deep, unchanging love reflects God’s love for us! We can trust God’s Word, the Bible, because it consistently shows us examples of His faithfulness and how He wants us to live and love. When we choose to be a friend like Jonathan, we are showing God’s love to the world, reminding others why we believe in a God who is the ultimate faithful friend.

🎭 Skit Blueprint & Script Excerpt
Characters:
- AVANI (8 years old, excited and a little bossy)
- BEN (9 years old, quiet and artistic)
- CHLOE (8 years old, energetic and observant)
- MR. HARRISON (Teacher, friendly but firm)
[Setting: A classroom. Three desks pushed together, covered with construction paper, glitter, glue, and markers. A partially built volcano model sits in the middle.]
AVANI: Okay, sidekicks! Operation ‘Epic Science Project: Volcano Blast’ is a go! Ben, you’re on lava painting. Chloe, you’re in charge of making the trees for our diorama. And I… I am the fearless leader!
BEN: (Quietly, already mixing red and orange paint) Got it, Avani. But… shouldn’t we double-check the eruption formula? I think we need more vinegar than baking soda.
CHLOE: (Humming, carefully cutting out tiny green trees) Yeah, Ben’s right. My older brother’s volcano project totally flopped last year because they didn’t measure right.
AVANI: (Waving a dismissive hand) Details, details! We need to focus on looking amazing! Everyone else in class is doing boring old solar systems. Our volcano needs to be spectacular!
BEN: (He looks down, a bit disheartened, and keeps painting the lava, but now a bit slower.)
CHLOE: (Notices Ben) Hey, Ben, your painting looks awesome! The texture of the lava is so real!
MR. HARRISON: (Walking by) How are my scientists doing? Remember, teamwork and accuracy are key for a successful project. And presentation, of course, Avani!
AVANI: (Beaming) Don’t worry, Mr. Harrison! We’ve got this! Best project ever!
MR. HARRISON: (Chuckles) I look forward to seeing it. (He walks away.)
CHLOE: Avani, seriously. Ben has a point. We have to make sure this volcano actually erupts correctly, or it’s just a pretty rock.
AVANI: It’ll be fine! Trust me! I know these things! We have to stand out!
BEN: (Whispering to Chloe) I really think we should check the measurements… but Avani gets mad when I question her plans.
CHLOE: (Puts a hand on Ben’s shoulder) Hold on. That’s not how sidekicks work. Remember what we learned? A friend protects you, stands by you, and loves you no matter what. And that includes protecting the project from a messy eruption or, you know, a totally flat one!
AVANI: What are you two whispering about? Are you doubting my leadership?
CHLOE: (Takes a deep breath) Avani, it’s not doubting you. It’s helping the *project*. Ben is really good at details, and he’s trying to protect our grade. Like Jonathan protected David, even from his own dad!
AVANI: But… it’s *my* idea to make it grand!
BEN: (Gathering courage) And it *is* grand, Avani! But a grand project also needs to *work*. My older sister, Lena, always says a great chef tastes their food before serving it. We should test our eruption proportions before the big show.
AVANI: (Sighs, crosses her arms) Ugh, fine! But only because you guys are being so… persistent. What’s your super-secret formula, Ben?
BEN: (Brightens immediately, pulls out a crumpled note) Okay, so Lena told me it’s usually two parts baking soda to one part vinegar for a good foamy eruption that doesn’t just fizzle out. We have too much baking soda right now!
CHLOE: See, Avani? He’s a genius! Our super-scientific sidekick! We need to adjust our ingredients. It’s like Lawson helping Watson cross the wobbly bridge – helping each other makes the adventure better!
AVANI: (Picks up a small container of vinegar, a smile slowly spreads across her face) Hmm. Alright, Ben. You’re in charge of the scientific proportions. Chloe, you make sure the trees don’t get melted. I’ll still be in charge of the overall spectacular-ness! Team, let’s make this volcano blast-tastic AND functional!
BEN: (Grinning) Awesome! Let’s do it!
CHLOE: Sidekicks unite!
[They huddle together, excitedly discussing the new plan, Avani now listening intently to Ben’s ideas. They truly are side-by-side.]

Themed Sunday School Games & Craft Template
Keep the momentum going with active learning games and a themed craft that kids can take home to show their families!
🎯 Active Games
🤝 Sidekick Scramble
Divide kids into pairs. Give each pair a short, simple task (e.g., ‘untie these three shoelaces together,’ ‘build a tower with 5 blocks using only one hand each,’ ‘move this ball from one end of the room to the other without using hands, only shoulders/backs’). Emphasize working ‘side-by-side’ to complete the task. The goal isn’t speed but cooperation and demonstrating support for their sidekick.
🛡️ Protect the King/Queen
Choose one child to be the ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ (David). Choose 2-3 other children to be their ‘Protectors’ (Jonathan). The rest of the children are ‘Enemies’ (King Saul’s soldiers) who try to tag the King/Queen. The Protectors must link arms around the King/Queen, acting as a shield, to prevent them from being tagged. If the King/Queen gets tagged, new roles are chosen. Play several rounds.
🚧 Blindfolded Buddy Walk
Pair children up. One child is blindfolded, and the other is their ‘guide.’ Set up a simple obstacle course using chairs, cones, or pillows. The guide must use only verbal instructions to help their blindfolded buddy navigate the course safely. Emphasize trust and clear communication. Swap roles after one round. Discuss how trusting our friends (and God!) helps us through tough spots.
🎨 Themed Craft: 💖 Friendship Stone Pendants
Supplies Needed:
- Smooth, flat river stones (1-2 per child)
- Acrylic paint pens (various colors)
- Clear sealant spray (for teacher use)
- Yarn or cord
- Masking tape
- Small drill with tiny bit (for teacher, optional, to create a hole for hanging)
Instructions:
1. Provide each child with a smooth river stone. 2. Instruct them to use the paint pens to decorate their stone with symbols of friendship (hearts, two figures holding hands, ‘BFF’, etc.) or write ‘Proverbs 17:17’ or ‘Sidekick’. 3. Encourage them to think about what makes a good friend as they decorate. 4. After the paint dries, the teacher can carefully drill a small hole at the top of each stone (or children can simply keep them as pocket stones). 5. Thread a piece of yarn or cord through the hole to create a necklace or simply tie a piece of yarn around the stone like a gift. 6. The teacher can spray the finished stones with clear sealant to protect the artwork. (Ensure good ventilation if spraying).
