π Teacher’s Guide: This lesson teaches children the incredible story of the Red Sea crossing, emphasizing that no matter how ‘stuck’ or impossible a situation feels, God is powerful enough to clear a path and make a way where there seems to be none. Through a relatable modern parable, an engaging object lesson, and interactive activities, kids will learn to trust in God’s mighty strength and faithfulness in every challenge, understanding that He always has a plan.
Hey everyone! Have you ever been in a really, really tough spot? I’m talking about a situation where you felt totally boxed in, like there was no way out, no way forward, no way to solve the problem? Maybe you were playing a game and got cornered, or you had a super hard homework assignment and just couldn’t figure it out. Woah! That feeling of being stuck, it’s not fun, is it? It can feel a little scary, a little hopeless even.
Well, guess what? Today, we’re going to talk about a time in the Bible when a whole group of people felt more stuck than anyone could imagine! They were trapped! And we’re going to learn about a God who shows up in the biggest, most unbelievable way possible to clear their path. Wait, think about that for a second… a God so powerful, He can clear *any* path!
Our main idea today is a powerful one: **When we get stuck, God clears the way!** Weβre going to open our Bibles to the book of **Exodus**, where we find a story that proves this idea beyond a shadow of a doubt. Get ready for ‘The Great Sea Split-Up!’
Drawing from the scripture passage of Exodus 14:1-29 (The Red Sea Crossing), this lesson provides a clear, biblically-grounded foundation of trust and understanding for children of all ages.
“Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. All that night the Lord pushed the sea back with a strong east wind. He turned the sea into dry land. The waters were divided.” – Exodus 14:21
Modern Parable: π¦ The Aqua Park Predicament!
Ember, Abby, Milley, Hensliegh, and Hazel had been dreaming about today for weeks! It was finally the super-duper-splashy-spectacular Aqua Park day! Woah! They zipped down slides, splashed in the wave pool, and felt like champions conquering every water challenge. But then, it happened. They stood at the base of the ‘Mount Everest Mega-Slide,’ the tallest, most awesome slide in the whole park. They had to try it!
“Okay, team,” Ember declared, “we’ve got this!” But as they joined the winding, endless line, a nervous feeling started bubbling up. It wasn’t the height; it was the rule: you had to go down in pairs, but there were five of them! Hensliegh and Hazel were already best buddies for a pair, leaving Ember, Abby, and Milley with an odd number. “Oh no!” Abby groaned. “One of us will be left out! What do we do? We can’t all go together, and no one wants to be alone!” It felt like a giant, watery wall had suddenly appeared, blocking their fun. Everyone looked defeated. “This is impossible!” Milley sighed.
Just when they thought their Mount Everest Mega-Slide dream was over, Ember remembered something her dad always said: ‘When you hit a wall, look for the gate!’ She quickly scanned the crowd. Aha! “Wait a second!” Ember exclaimed, pointing. “Look over there! Is that… Ms. Jenkins, our youth leader?” Indeed it was! Ms. Jenkins, seeing their dilemma, cheerfully waved them over. “Hey girls! Looks like you have an extra rider. I’d love to join you for a slide!” Can you believe it? Just like that, their ‘impossible’ problem melted away.
With a cheer, Ember, Abby, and Milley paired up with Ms. Jenkins, and all five friends got to experience the thrill of the Mega-Slide together! The day was saved, and they learned an important lesson: even when a situation seems completely stuck and there’s no way forward, sometimes, with a little looking around and trusting that help can appear, a path opens up. Just like Ms. Jenkins helped clear their way to fun, sometimes we need to remember that someone even mightier can clear our way in life’s big challenges!
Interactive Sunday School Object Lesson: π§ The Tangled Trail to Trust!
Children learn best when they can see, hear, and feel a concept. This “The Great Sea Split-Up!” children’s sermon features a powerful, memorable object lesson using simple household items to demonstrate the core spiritual truth: Even when our path is completely tangled and seems impossible, God can untangle it and make a clear way for us to move forward..
π₯ Object Lesson Outline
Core Point: Even when our path is completely tangled and seems impossible, God can untangle it and make a clear way for us to move forward.
Supplies Needed:
- A long piece of yarn or rope (about 5-10 feet)
- Several small toy cars or action figures
Step-by-Step Guide:
Hold up the long piece of yarn. Say: ‘Imagine this yarn is our path through life. It’s usually nice and clear, right?’ Now, demonstrate by intentionally creating several tight knots and tangles in the yarn. Make it look really messy and impossible to untangle quickly. ‘Woah! Now look at our path! It’s all tangled up! If these toy cars (place a car at one end) tried to drive through this, they’d get totally stuck!’ Point to the knots. ‘Sometimes, life feels like this, doesn’t it? We hit problems, challenges, or situations where we just feel completely stuck, like these cars can’t move.’ Pause for a moment, letting the kids see the tangled mess. ‘But guess what? When we feel stuck, when the path is all knotted up, we have a God who is bigger than any tangle!’ Start to slowly and deliberately untangle the yarn. As you do, explain: ‘It might take a little time, it might need some patience, but God is powerful! He can see every knot, every twist, and He knows exactly how to make a clear path for us again!’ Once it’s mostly untangled, run a toy car smoothly along the cleared path. ‘See? God clears the way!’

π Scripture Reading: Exodus 14:1-29 (The Red Sea Crossing)
“Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. All that night the Lord pushed the sea back with a strong east wind. He turned the sea into dry land. The waters were divided.” (Exodus 14:21)
Imagine this: God’s people, the Israelites, had been slaves in Egypt for hundreds of years! Can you believe it? But God, through Moses, had finally led them out with amazing miracles. Freedom! They were on their way to a new land God promised. But just when they thought they were safe, Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, changed his mind! He sent his entire army, chariots, and horsemen chasing after them! Uh oh!
The Israelites were absolutely terrified. Picture it: in front of them, the vast, deep Red Sea! Behind them, Pharaoh’s furious army thundering closer, kicking up dust! They were trapped! Stuck between a massive, uncrossable body of water and a powerful, vengeful army. ‘Moses, why did you bring us out here to die?’ they cried. They truly felt there was NO way out. Hold on… what would you do?
But Moses, full of faith, told them to ‘Be still! The Lord will fight for you!’ Then God told Moses to stretch his staff over the sea. Woah! And then, a miracle! God sent a mighty east wind all night long, and the waters of the Red Sea split apart! The sea turned into dry land! The Israelites walked right through on dry ground, with walls of water on both sides! As soon as they were safe, the waters crashed back, trapping and defeating Pharaoh’s army. Aha! God cleared the way!
ποΈ Sensory Engagement Element: During the part of the story where the waters split and they walk on dry ground, have the children close their eyes and imagine the smell of damp earth and sea salt, then have them gently feel a rough, dry piece of sandpaper to mimic the sensation of walking on dry ground where there was once water.
Apologetics & Core Truths: Lessons For Us
What an amazing story, right? This isn’t just a cool ancient tale; it’s a powerful lesson for us today! It teaches us that our God is not just a little powerful; He is ALL-powerful! He made the heavens and the earth, and He can definitely handle any obstacle we face. How do we know God is faithful? Because He kept His promise to the Israelites, rescuing them from certain doom. Why can we trust His Word? Because throughout history, from the Red Sea to Jesus rising from the dead, God has shown He always does what He says He will do. The purpose of remembering His works like this is to build our faith! When you feel stuck β whether itβs a problem at school, a disagreement with a friend, or feeling lonely β remember the Red Sea! God clears the way! He might not part a sea for us literally, but He will guide us, give us wisdom, send help, or give us the strength to overcome. We believe this because our God is a God of miracles, a God who loves us deeply, and a God who promises to never leave us nor forsake us.

π Skit Blueprint & Script Excerpt
Characters:
- Ember (The Optimist)
- Abby (The Worrier)
- Milley (The Problem-Solver)
- Hensliegh (The Enthusiast)
- Hazel (The Practical One)
- Lifeguard Liam (The Authority Figure)
[Setting: A brightly colored water park stage. There’s a ‘slide entrance’ sign and a long ‘line’ made of chairs or ropes. Ember, Abby, Milley, Hensliegh, and Hazel are excitedly talking.]
EMBER: Okay, team, this is it! The ‘Tidal Tangle Twister’! I’ve heard it’s the fastest, twistiest slide in the whole Aqua Park!
ABBY: (Nervously) But Ember, it looks so high! And the line is super long! What if we wait all this time and then… we can’t go?
HENSLEIGH: Nonsense, Abby! We are the Aqua Avengers! We conquer all slides! Right, Hazel?
HAZEL: (Adjusting her goggles) As long as we follow the rules. And have enough inner tube riders. We need four.
MILLEY: Wait, there are five of us! Oh no! Two tubes, two people per tube… one of us will be left out! What if they don’t let odd numbers go?
EMBER: (Eyes wide) You’re right! This is an Aqua-tastrophe! We can’t split up! We came here to conquer this together!
ABBY: See? I knew something would go wrong! We’re stuck! Just like the Israelites at the Red Sea! Except, you know, with less chariots and more chlorine.
HENSLEIGH: (Pacing) What do we do? We can’t just stand here forever! My toes are getting pruney just thinking about it!
HAZEL: Maybe we can ask someone? The Lifeguard?
MILLEY: That’s a good idea, Hazel! Lifeguards know everything about slides. Let’s ask Lifeguard Liam.
[They approach the ‘Lifeguard stand’ where LIAM is ‘on duty’.]
EMBER: Excuse me, Lifeguard Liam? We have a bit of a predicament.
LIAM: (Smiling) What’s up, Aqua Adventurers?
ABBY: There are five of us, and the ‘Tidal Tangle Twister’ needs pairs. We don’t want anyone to be left out!
LIAM: Ah, the classic ‘odd number’ problem. Happens all the time. (He thinks for a moment.) Well, usually, we’d have to find another single rider to join you, or you’d have to take turns…
HENSLEIGH: (Dejected) Oh, man! We’re stuck!
HAZEL: (Sighs) So close, yet so far.
LIAM: But, wait a second! I just remembered… Today is ‘Lifeguard Fun Day’! And part of our job is to ensure maximum fun! I’m officially on my break right now, and I’m a certified ‘Tidal Tangle Twister’ rider!
MILLEY: (Gasps) You mean…?
LIAM: You bet! I’ll be your fifth! That makes two perfect pairs and me, the ‘bonus’ rider! Problem solved! I’ll go with Ember!
EMBER: (Excitedly) Woohoo! You cleared the way for us, Lifeguard Liam! This is just like Moses and the Red Sea, but with more splashing!
ABBY: (Relieved) Oh, thank goodness! I really thought we were going to be stuck forever. My worries just floated away!
HENSLEIGH: Let’s go! Tidal Tangle Twister, here we come!
HAZEL: (Smiling) See? Even when it looks like there’s no path forward, sometimes a path opens up right when you need it. Just like God cleared the Red Sea for the Israelites, Lifeguard Liam cleared the slide for us!
MILLEY: Yeah! When we get stuck, someone clears the way! Or, in this case, some *one*!
[They cheer and exit the stage, ready to ride the slide.]

Themed Sunday School Games & Craft Template
Keep the momentum going with active learning games and a themed craft that kids can take home to show their families!
π― Active Games
π Red Sea Relay Race!
Divide the children into two teams. Set up two ‘seas’ using blue tarps or blankets laid on the floor. At one end of the ‘sea,’ place a pile of small ‘dry land’ items (e.g., pillows, cardboard squares, paper plates). The goal is for each team member to ‘cross the sea’ by placing down one ‘dry land’ item at a time, stepping on it, then picking up the one behind them and moving it forward, until they reach the other side. They must not touch the ‘water’ (tarp). The first team to have all members cross their ‘sea’ wins! Emphasize that teamwork and careful planning (trusting God) help clear the way.
πͺ Mighty Obstacle Course!
Create a simple obstacle course using classroom chairs, tables, blankets, or cones. Examples: crawl under a chair, step over a blanket, weave through cones, jump over a ‘river’ (rope on the floor). Tell the kids that each obstacle represents a time we might feel stuck. Before they start, remind them of the Red Sea story and that God helps us overcome. Encourage them to help each other if needed. Time each child or team, celebrating their ‘clearing of the way’ through the course!
π£ Follow the Leader β Blindfolded Trust!
Designate a safe, clear path in the room with some gentle turns and perhaps a small ‘obstacle’ (like stepping over a pillow). One child is blindfolded (‘stuck’ and unable to see the way). Another child is their ‘leader’ (representing God). The leader gently guides the blindfolded child with verbal instructions (‘step forward,’ ‘turn left,’ ‘step over’). Emphasize trust in the leader. Switch roles so everyone gets a turn to be ‘stuck’ and to be the ‘clearer of the way.’ Discuss how trusting God is like trusting our leader in this game.
π¨ Themed Craft: βοΈ Paper Plate Red Sea Split!
Supplies Needed:
- 2 paper plates per child
- Blue paint or blue construction paper
- Brown construction paper or crayons
- Scissors
- Glue stick or tape
- Cotton balls (optional, for clouds)
Instructions:
1. Have children paint one side of each paper plate blue or cover it with blue construction paper to represent the Red Sea. Let it dry. 2. Once dry, help them cut one of the blue plates in half down the middle. These will be the ‘walls’ of water. 3. On the second, whole paper plate, have them draw or glue brown paper for the ‘dry land’ path in the middle. 4. Now, glue or tape the two half-plates (the ‘water walls’) upright on either side of the ‘dry land’ path on the whole plate. The cut edge should be at the bottom, creating a gap for the path. 5. They can add small figures or draw tiny people walking through the dry land. Optional: glue cotton balls to the top of the ‘water walls’ to look like clouds or waves. 6. As they craft, talk about how God made a way through the impossible!
