Description

📖 Greater Love: Sacrificing for Others (John 15:13)

Throughout our nation’s history, brave men and women have put on military uniforms, left their cozy homes and loving families behind, and stood watch on distant shores. Whether enduring scorching desert heat, freezing rain, or turbulent ocean waters, service members dedicate their lives to protecting the freedom and peace of their neighbors. Their courage reminds us that real love is not just a pleasant feeling—real love is an active, sacrificial choice.

On the evening before He went to the cross, Jesus gathered His disciples in an upper room and shared words that define true greatness: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13). While soldiers willingly risk their lives to defend their country, Jesus did something even more astonishing: He willingly laid down His sinless life on Calvary’s cross for all humanity, paying the penalty for our sins so that we could be forgiven and welcomed into God’s family forever.

Whenever we observe Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or see an American flag waving in the breeze, this coloring sheet helps children connect civic gratitude with the eternal gospel. We thank God for the brave heroes who serve our communities, and above all, we praise Jesus Christ, the Captain of our Salvation, who won the ultimate victory over sin and death!

💡 3 Sunday School Discussion Questions

  • 1. Question for Recall: According to Jesus in John 15:13, what is the greatest expression of love a person can show? (To lay down one’s life for one’s friends!)
  • 2. Question for Heart Reflection: Why do we pause on holidays like Memorial Day and Veterans Day to remember our military service members and their families?
  • 3. Question for Real-Life Application: Jesus sacrificed His life for us. How can we show sacrificial love to our siblings, classmates, and parents this week—even when it means putting someone else first?

✂️ Hands-On Activity & Coloring Ideas

  • Camouflage Uniform Blending: Teach kids how to use olive drabs, desert tans, and forest greens to create authentic camouflage patterns on the soldier’s uniform. Shade Jesus’ robe in radiant white with warm golden light beams radiating outward.
  • Hero Thank-You Card: Fold the colored page in half to create a giant greeting card, and have students write a handwritten note of encouragement inside: “Thank you for your service and sacrifice! Our Sunday School class is praying for you.” Mail the cards to local veterans or active-duty units.
  • Poppy Memorial Badge: Glue a small red felt poppy flower or red paper cutout in the upper corner of the page as a traditional symbol of remembrance and honor.

✝️ Closing Teacher Prayer

“Lord Jesus, thank You for demonstrating the greatest love by laying down Your life on the cross for us. We pray Your supernatural protection over every soldier, sailor, airman, marine, and guardian who serves in harm’s way. Comfort the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice, and teach us to love others selflessly each day. In Your mighty name, Amen.”
