1. The Problem: The Summer Spiritual Slump
We see it every year. Students build incredible spiritual habits from September to May. They learn their memory verses, they engage in small groups, and they build wonderful friendships in children’s church. But then, summer hits. Schedules become chaotic, families travel, and routine goes out the window.
This summer transition lesson for kids is designed to tackle that exact problem. We need to teach our children that our relationship with God doesn’t have an “end of year” bell. God isn’t just the God of the Sunday school classroom; He is the God of the playground, the swimming pool, and the family road trip.
2. The Core Message: Philippians 3:14
To ground this lesson in scripture, we turn to the words of the Apostle Paul. When writing a children’s sermon on finishing the school year, there is no better verse than Philippians 3:14.
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”
— Philippians 3:14 (NIV)
The core theological takeaway for your kids is simple: The end of the school year is indeed a “finish line” worth celebrating. But in God’s Kingdom, every finish line is actually a starting block for a new race. The “prize” isn’t a summer vacation; the prize is knowing Jesus more deeply every single day.

3. The 5-Minute Object Lesson: The Permanent Heart
Visual aids are the secret to keeping kids engaged. This simple 5-minute object lesson beautifully illustrates the difference between temporary school knowledge and permanent faith. It requires almost zero prep time for the teacher!
Supplies Needed:
- An old, plain white t-shirt
- A washable marker (like Crayola)
- A permanent marker (like a Sharpie)
- A spray bottle filled with water
What to Say (Teacher Script):
“Does anyone have a favorite subject in school? Maybe math or history? (Let kids answer). During the summer, sometimes our brains take a break, and we forget a little bit of what we learned. Watch this.”
Take the washable marker and write the word “MATH” or “SPELLING” on the white t-shirt.
“This shirt represents your mind over the summer. When the summer fun hits—the pool, the beach, the sprinklers…” (Spray the shirt with the water bottle until the washable marker starts to bleed and fade away).
“See how those school subjects can kind of wash away? But there is something we learned this year that should NEVER wash away. Does anyone know what that is?”
Take the permanent marker and write the word “JESUS” in big, bold letters across the chest of the t-shirt. Spray it heavily with the water bottle. The letters won’t budge.
“School subjects might fade, but the person God is building you to be is permanent. Your faith should never wash off. When you go on vacation, Jesus goes with you. When you play outside, Jesus is with you!”
4. The Children’s Sermon: The Finish Line & The New Start
Here is a complete, word-for-word children’s sermon on finishing the school year. You can read this directly to your kids or use it as an outline.
Introduction: “Can you hear it? That beautiful, wonderful sound? RIIIIING! That’s the sound of the last school bell! You’ve spent months sitting at desks, you’ve sharpened a thousand pencils, and you’ve survived the cafeteria food. You’ve reached the finish line! Give yourselves a round of applause!”
The Twist: “But here’s a secret I need to tell you. In God’s Kingdom, every finish line is actually a starting block for a new race. You aren’t just ‘off’ for the summer; you are ‘sent’ into the summer!”
The Bible Story: “Think about the disciples. They spent three whole years in ‘The School of Jesus.’ They watched Him heal sick people, they heard His amazing stories, and they learned how to pray. Then, Jesus went to heaven. That was their ‘Graduation Day.’ But did they just go back to their old fishing boats and forget everything they learned? No! They took those lessons and changed the whole world. They realized that the ‘Summer’ of their lives was the time to put their faith into action.”
The Application: “The Bible says in Philippians 3:14 that we should press on toward the goal to win the prize. That means we don’t stop growing just because the homework stopped. This summer, I challenge you to make a ‘Trigger Prayer.’ Every time you smell sunscreen, I want you to let that smell trigger a reminder in your brain to say: ‘God, stay with me everywhere I go this summer!'”
Prayer: “Lord, thank You for finishing this year with us. Protect these students as they head into summer break. Help them to be shining lights for You in their neighborhoods, camps, and vacations. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

5. High-Energy Summer Transition Games
Kids learn best when they are moving. Reinforce the concept of the end of school year Sunday school lesson with these two incredibly fun, low-prep games.
Game 1: The Finish Line Dash
Supplies: A roll of toilet paper or crepe paper.
How to Play: Create an obstacle course in your room or outside. Have two adult volunteers hold the toilet paper across the end of the course as a “Finish Line.” Have the kids race through the course. BUT, before they are allowed to break through the finish line paper, they have to shout out one thing they learned about Jesus this year! Once they shout it, they break the line and run into the “Summer Zone.”
The Tie-in: We don’t drop our knowledge at the finish line; we carry our faith into the next season!
Game 2: Adventure Bag Scramble
Supplies: Two backpacks, a pile of “school items” (books, pencils, folders), and a pile of “summer items” (sunglasses, flip flops, beach balls).
How to Play: Divide the kids into two relay teams. At the start of the race, the backpacks are full of heavy “School items.” One by one, the kids run up, take one school item out of the bag, and replace it with a fun summer item. The first team to completely transition their bag from school to summer wins.
The Tie-in: We drop the heavy school schedule, but we keep our Jesus gear packed and ready to go!
6. Craft Time & Free Printables
No Sunday school lesson is complete without a great take-home craft. Our printable Faith in Action Coloring Page is the perfect activity for kids to do while they are calming down from the games.
In the full downloadable curriculum, we also include “The Great Summer Navigator” Craft. This is a printable wheel that kids can cut out and assemble with a brass fastener. Every morning during the summer, they spin the arrow to get a “Summer Mission” (like Prayer, Bible Reading, Kindness, or Joy) to focus on for the day.
7. Small Group Discussion Questions
To really make this children’s sermon on finishing the school year stick, break the kids into small groups based on their age. Here are some guided questions to help your volunteers lead a meaningful conversation.
For K-2nd Grade:
- What is your absolute favorite thing about summer break?
- Do you think Jesus likes to see you have fun at the pool or the park?
- What is one way you can show kindness to your brother, sister, or friends this summer?
- What happens to the washable marker on our heart? What happens to the permanent marker?
For 3rd-5th Grade:
- What does “pressing on toward the goal” mean to you in your daily life?
- Is it easier to act like a Christian when you are in a routine, or when you are on vacation? Why?
- What is one specific spiritual goal you have for this break? (e.g., praying every morning, reading a chapter of Proverbs).
- How can we stay connected to our church friends even when we aren’t at school?
8. A Hilarious Skit: The Great Survival Suitcase
If you have youth group volunteers or older kids who love drama, this quick 3-minute skit is guaranteed to get laughs while driving home the main point of the lesson.
Characters: Hazel (Hyper-excited for summer) and Henry (Overloaded and stressed).
Props: A giant suitcase, winter coat, life jacket, multiple sunglasses, a globe, and a waffle maker.
[Henry enters dragging a suitcase the size of a minivan. He is wearing two pairs of sunglasses, a life jacket over a winter parka, and a graduation cap with a chin strap.]
Hazel: “Henry! What is… all of this? We are going to the park for a summer BBQ, not moving to a deserted island for ten years!”
Henry: [Huffing and puffing] “Hazel! Preparation is everything! I have textbooks in here. I have a globe. I have 500 sharpened pencils in case there’s an emergency math test in the middle of a pool party!”
Hazel: “Emergency math tests? Henry, the school year is over! Why are you wearing a winter coat?”
Henry: “Because the weather is unpredictable! And I have my science projects in here too! If we see a bug, I have to classify it or my 4th-grade brain will explode!”
Hazel: “Henry, you are suffering from ‘Heavy Load Syndrome.’ You’re trying to carry the classroom into the summer. God doesn’t want you to carry the heavy books; He just wants you to carry the lessons in your heart. Your faith is weightless!”
Henry: “So… I don’t need the science kit to keep the wonder? I don’t need a backpack full of rules to love Jesus?”
Hazel: “Exactly! Jesus goes with you everywhere. Just bring your heart!”
Henry: “You’re right! [He unzips the bag, pulls out a tiny Bible] This is all I need! [He kicks the giant bag away] WHOA! I feel ten pounds lighter! Let’s go use our faith at the BBQ!”
Conclusion: Send Them Out Empowered!
Wrapping up your ministry year doesn’t have to be exhausting. By using this end of school year Sunday school lesson, you are saving yourself precious hours of planning time while delivering a high-impact, scripturally sound message that kids will remember all summer long.
Remember, the goal isn’t just to entertain them for one last Sunday; the goal is to equip them to be little ambassadors for Christ wherever their summer adventures take them. We want them crossing the finish line of the school year, only to sprint off the starting blocks of their summer mission!
